Absolutely makes sense. Especially with younger generations, such as Gen Z. Listen, understand and make the issues resonate within. It may be why climate change is one of the big issues for them - it resonates with their fear of a future they will have to face.
Yes, great news from North Carolina. Justice Allison Riggs court victory is even more striking when we take into account the fact that U.S. District Judge Richard Myers is a Trump-appointed judge!
I do wonder what Republicans have gained, how they perhaps have benefited, from dragging out the final outcome. It has gone on and on – and it’s still not over.
As a lawyer I bemoan how every federal judge is evaluated by who nominated them. In 2018 I attended a dinner in honor of the federal judiciary where a judge who had just been promoted by Trump to the appellate court gave a stirring speech about immigration ending with the sentiment: “if you ever want to feel patriotic about our country, attend a naturalization ceremony. People from all walks of life celebrating that they are now citizens.”
I agree. It concerns me how every time there's a case we hear who appointed the judge. I understand the sentiment to say, "Even Trump-appointed judges . . ." but it reinforces the notion that judges do and should rule based on politics.
I saw the interview with Rachel Janfraza yesterday, and I highly recommend it.
The question of how to draw young people back to the fight is one that is on my mind. Whatcom County Democrats (WCD) is my local organization, and I'm intrigued by how the former Chair voluntarily stepped down to make way for a younger, very capable successor. WCD has a relatively young executive board, and young people in Whatcom County can find people from their generation on the City Council and in other offices. Whatcom County did not suffer a decline in youth turnout--it was around 75%. And in Whatcom County, Kamala Harris improved on Joe Biden's 2020 numbers.
I'm getting more involved in the WCD, and I'm particularly interested in what the political culture is like in this organization. It seems to me that the WCD have a good foundation for widening their appeal to young people. I want to learn more.
Thank you, Simon, especially for the action items. I rely on them for my daily calls to my elected representatives. The news from North Carolina is indeed good and I'm fairly confident the 4th Circuit will shoot down any appeal. Good for the North Carolina Dems and Anderson Clayton!
I called Senators Alsobrooks and Van Hollen and Congressman Raskin and asked for criminal referrals against Elon Musk and Trump.
Today I will attend the county bd of supervisors’ meeting in the morning, and in the afternoon get oriented to attend my first statewide Dem convention. I’m counting on Schiff and Padilla to do and say good things without me. I’m counting on my MAGAt Rep to be an ass no matter what I do. I’m focusing on getting rid of him, which is part of the orientation…
Y'all - that news about the N.C. election fills my heart to the brim with HOPE! Thank you, Simon. I am getting ready to call Barry Loudermilk's office and tell him why he better not vote for the dishonest continuing resolution they are attempting to pass - your conversation with Tom Suozzi yesterday really fired me up.
My congresspersons calls script for Tuesday that anyone can riff off of:
- Calling re: Maiker Espinoza, one of the men who was sent to CECOT w/o a hrng in March. He is 25 y/o.
- He entered US in May ‘24 w/ his gf Yorely Bernal, who is 20 y/o, and their toddler Antonella Bernal. They were from Venezuela. They turned themselves in @ the border.
- They were detained & told their tattoos were suspicious. Their child was taken from them. Child is still in foster care in the US.
- The father has now been sent to be incarcerated, apparently for life, at CECOT in exchange for American taxpayer dollars. Mother deported to Venezuela.
- Neither of them has ever been convicted of any gang-related crime in any country.
- The regime’s allegations against two are sensational. They say he ran a torture chamber & she recruited for drug smuggling & prostitution. They’ve offered ZERO evidence to any court.
- Their family says he worked in bricklaying & ironwork, then as a barber, and she worked in fast food. If they were working jobs and raising a toddler, how did they have time to do all this gang-banging?
- These are kids in their 20s.
- Put a stop to this barbarity. Do not relinquish our basic constitutional & human rights.
You can verify Maiker’s story by googling for news reports. Numerous outlets from ABC to the WSJ have published stories on extensive research about various CECOT detainees and their backstories.
There’s a parallel here to the Argentinian Dirty War. That is when children of political dissidents in Argentina were taken from the parents, and adopted to loyalist families, while the parents were murdered.
We appear to be in the beginning stages of what historians often refer to as a period of extreme violence.
Our situation all seems so simple to understand when one sees that every single thing T. and his minions do is how to create a nazi-like State....... It's meant to be a failed state so the new white/aryan state can rule... We don't have to critique each little thing they are doing...it all makes sense .....
A high school in a small town about an hour north of Minneapolis got hit with a book banning policy from their school board a few months ago, and some members of the community decided to fight back. A month ago, I went to speak at a school board meeting up there to support them. They'd organized a rally and news conference beforehand where they announced lawsuits from MN ACLU and the teacher's union.
Their activism inspired the author Dave Eggers to come out and host an event up there last night where parents, teachers, librarians, organizers, and students all spoke, and it was really striking to me how much organization they'd all done. There was one parent who had really taken it upon herself to be the face of the whole thing--a former Trump voter who'd become sickened by him-- and she'd partnered with a guy from Out Front Minnesota who'd helped with the community organization. And now, they have a template for fighting book bans that they are going to share with communities across Minnesota.
And, you guys, the students were incredible. The day of the school board meeting, they organized a walkout in the high school where they all sat outside the school and read books that had been removed from the shelves. They spoke at the press conference, the school board meeting, and the event last night, and they were so impassioned and eloquent and organized. They were fighters.
As we talk about getting young people involved, I want to say that these kids are out there. And the book banning movement has been truly horrific and devastating, but watching people--adults and kids--on the ground learn to organize and fight back, it truly gives me hope.
I wouldn't have known about this if I hadn't read it in Hopium, and I live in Mpls. Which town was it, Annie? Wish our "local news" evening reports actually had MORE local news rather than the approved messages from their overlords. Thanks for this report!
It is! They did get media coverage the first time (one day), and channel 9 was at the meeting the other night though I can't find if they ever ran anything.
Crypto needs strong regulation and a substantial tax to address the environmental impact. Crypto serves no useful purpose that I've ever seen, and it is having a major environmental impact. For nothing.
From the linked article: "The electricity needed for a single Bitcoin transaction can equal the energy a person in Germany consumes in three months. "
Cryptocurrency has always been a solution in search of a problem. Its major use is to help criminals launder money. It's easy to see why the Trump family crime syndicate is investing in it. It's unregulated, easily manipulable, a good way to separate unsophisticated rubes from their money, and a perfect vehicle for profiteering off oligarchs, foreign officials and institutions who want to curry favor with this corrupt presidency.
I had not seen the good news from Georgia. Kemp would have been a prohibitive favorite over Ossoff and was the strongest GOP candidate. This gives Ossoff a fighting chance.
I agree friends. Take MTG out of her Ruby Red district and even lifelong Republicans who aren't MAGA robots would have a hard time voting for her brand of crazy. Warnock and Ossoff won the hardest battle of their political careers in January 2021 - and they're good Senators and men. I hope they have long political careers. Now we have to conspire to get Stacey Abrams in the government somehow.
I'm certainly no political expert, but when Kemp stood up to T in 2021 and has distanced himself from T since, I figured then he was aiming for a presidential run in 2028. He's not crazy like T, so might appeal to regular Republicans who are sick of T's drama and chaos but agree with his policies on immigration, abortion, etc, which is actually a scary thought. I never thought Kemp would consider Senate b/c his focus is elsewhere. I agree he would have been a more formidible opponet for Ossoff than MTG. But I have heard from people who say they are in the know that Raffensberg may be considering a Senate run now, and that could be bad news for Ossoff.
Made my calls, Scott and Moody (who I still do not believe is a real person). I called about Ed Fucking Martin and also separate calls about cuts to Medicaid and another call to oppose cuts to science funding.
I'm not seeing the latter on the Five Calls app, but I would suggest it is an important thing in the budget numbers I've been seeing. People who are following it closely see ~50% cuts to DoE (Energy) and NSF, which is going to be absolutely devastating if it comes to pass. This will hurt us in so many ways and the impact will extend decades into the future.
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. In support of my previous note (to be resubmitted later this afternoon) featuring the observations of the political consultant, Henrietta Treyz of Veda Partners, I am providing a snippet of the recent interview of Dolos by Kristen Welker of “Meet the Press.” DEMOCRATS need to jump on this “let them eat cake” moment for American small and medium-sized businesses.
The table has been set by the other side. The opposition party needs to AVOID political malpractice; they just need to provide an environment for the airing of the numerous tariff-based business difficulties. Here is the relevant passage:
KRISTEN WELKER:
So small businesses say they are being hurt by the Chinese tariffs. And some could be forced to shut down.
PRES. DONALD TRUMP:
And many businesses are being helped.
KRISTEN WELKER:
Are you considering —
PRES. DONALD TRUMP:
Look at the automobile —
KRISTEN WELKER:
– tariff relief for small businesses?
PRES. DONALD TRUMP:
Why do you always mention that. You know, you pick up a couple of little businesses. What about the car business? They’re going to make a fortune because of the tariffs. Do you know that the union, the head of the union, who was no fan of mine, Fain, Shawn Fain I guess his name is, right? He didn’t endorse me. The Teamsters did. A lot of people did. A lot of unions did. But he didn’t. He couldn’t stand me. Now he’s saying, “Wow. What Trump’s done for the automobile, I can’t believe it.” I assume he’s going to probably now say — the next thing he can say is, “I endorse this guy. He’s the greatest I’ve ever seen.” He can’t believe it’s happened. He said, “We’ve been waiting 40 years for somebody to do what Trump is doing.” So why don’t you mention the big car industry instead of mentioning somebody that’s doing strollers?
KRISTEN WELKER:
Well, I’m just asking you about small businesses. Are there any discussions about giving any relief to small businesses?
PRES. DONALD TRUMP:
They’re not going to need it.
KRISTEN WELKER:
Okay. Are these —
PRES. DONALD TRUMP:
They’re going to make so much money —
KRISTEN WELKER:
Are these tariffs —
PRES. DONALD TRUMP:
– if you build your product here. Remember, there are no tariffs if you build your product here. It’s very easy. It’s very simple.
THIS COUNTRY NEEDS TO REVISIT THE 1973 GOLDWATER RULE FROM THE APA! Remember the stories about how Dolos would refuse to pay his many contractors (i.e. if you want the money, sue him). Funny, it seems that he is not at all concerned about the generic small business in America. Instead, Dolos wants (more likely, needs) accolades for whatever he has “accomplished” (?). I wonder if he understands the definition of a “malignant narcissist.” For many an individual, introspection is a difficult process.
With the “price is no issue” vibe of Ferrari, note where Dolos is traveling next week. His travel seems to correspond with the growth opportunities for his family business (the Middle East). As he has “bigger fish to fry” (i.e. Crypto and foreign real estate deals), why would he be concerned with Wall Street’s fate— or the nation’s for that matter?

Would having a young VP have made a difference? Though Vance is NOT a positive for me, I am only asking about age.
This is past history now. But at any rate, everything I've ever seen suggests VP candidates make only a very marginal difference.

On the bright side, Ferrari had a banner first quarter for 2025, and with the Dolos tariffs (25% of their sales are in the USA), they are happy to raise prices by at least 10% (their customers will be fine, and the demand is strong). Because of the on/off/on process of Dolos in the financial markets, the trading profits were epic - for some: https://columbusintl.com/en/ferraris-strategic-nyc-showroom-relocation-completes-full-occupancy-at-prestigious-425-park-avenue/.
