Thank you Simon. I will listen soon. From the Chicago Sun Times : Peanut Tillman (one of my favorite Chicago Bears ) has stated he has left the FBI after 8 years because of immigration. He was not comfortable with the role the FBI has been playing recently. He won the Walter Payton award for community service. His father was an army sergeant, and he wanted to serve our country also. Chicago has so much to be proud of, and here is yet another example.
At least we got to see close up some of the finest 24K gold known to man. Or possibly some cheap $58 shit he had someone pick up at Home Depot along with some day workers?
Millie Polli Haskell....Simon, I wish I could say this is a report but, I'm sorry I am not able to participate in making calls, etc..Your post this morning was a good read and your recent conversation with Randi Weingarten was extremely important. I will buy her book. I hope tomorrow will be a better day for me.
I recently heard about how the Norwegian teachers and students wore paperclips on their lapels in protest of the Nazi occupation. I have passed the word on to my friends who have passed it on. Just one more way to protest.
Teachers are so important for conveying and demonstrating the concept and processes of critical thinking. So much of our understanding of the world depends on it.
If you are curious about the Norwegian teachers and their protests during Nazi occupation, I suggest you watch the documentary “The Teachers’ Protest” I think it’s on Vimeo and YouTube.
What a great interview. From my experiences teaching, the pandemic was a strange experience. What was actually much worse than teaching virtually (which for me went pretty well), was the way students reacted in the couple of years after the pandemic was over. I've never had such low levels of engagement and people not feeling like they needed to attend class. It was a real struggle. Things have recovered now to be more or less where things were before. So from my perspective, I think things are improving.
The attack on science was a surprise to me too, but I really think it shouldn't have been. I expected they would attack climate change and a few other things, but it has been remarkably broad. First, they want to control everything. Constraining what happens at universities is paramount to them. Second, the idea that they would interfere in science has a historic basis.
The Nazis derided Relativity as "Jewish Science" and tried to prevent its teaching. Ironically, some of the principles or Relativity ended the war. I think they also derided Einstein in the USSR, but more crucially there was Lysenko who was a favorite of the regime but his pseudoscientific ideas killed millions of people.
So in retrospect, I think none of this is at all surprising. Victor Orban needing to control the universities in Hungary has similarly destroyed their independence and functionality.
It's why the universities need to better stand together than they have. The Big 10 universities have all formed some kind of union together, and I'm hoping others can join into that structure.
Freinds! Well, I didn't know what to expect from this interview, but when Simon used the adjective "wonderful", I had to believe there was more to it than Randi just selling her book.
WOW! What an interview is right! So many deep, thoughtful points covered that resonate strongly...and I say this not just as a teacher, but as a member of our family and a citizen of the world. The discussion about the effects of post-Covid and how it intersects with where people find themselves today is quite fascinating. And oh, the paper clip! Teachers love and share paper clips! Thank you, Simon and Randi.
Simon, I wonder if we need to change terminology from fascist to authoritarian. Fascist is one form of authoritarianism and is very stigmatized. No disrespect for Randi’s book. I just wonder if we could appeal to more people not using fascism.
Just putting it out there. A good friend, who voted for Trump, threw it back at me when she kept talking about “woke” universities. I said that “woke” got us NiH, NCI, Vaccines…. She said didn’t agree with that (she is a breast cancer survivor) but… “they” call them Fascists. My comment was “not you, him, he’s a dictator. Then she asked to not discuss.
I always interpret “I don’t want to discuss any more” or “you won’t change my mind” as admissions of inability to win the argument and, thus, a default victory for me! Lol
I dunno. But how about “Nazi”. No ambiguity there.
There’s not 10% who think they know what “Authoritarian” means, and half of that 10% think it’s the definition of a good, but strict Dad. We really need to get out of our bubble… starting with using words that everyone knows and leave nothing to interpretation, let alone meaning.
Great interview and presentation. Thank you Simon and Randi.
On a different note, I am convinced more than ever that Putin has some serious dirt on DJT. If he doesn't do Putin's bidding, Putin may spill the beans on Mafia Don's sordid capitalistic history with Russia. Ugh! October 18th can't come soon enough!
Brazil's Trump Copycat Authoritarian Bolsonaro Sentenced to 27 Years
Jair Bolsonaro, the Brazilian ‘Trump-like’ authoritarian who after losing the presidency to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a liberal socialist, attempted a Jan 6th-styled insurrection modeled after Trump's insurrection, has been tried and sentenced to 27 years.
Bolsonaro took refuge in Florida after his attempted coup not far from Mar-a-Largo. Bolsonaro is head of a crime family like Trump, and has sons that were involved in his regime and ran his businesses. Under Bolsonaro the clearing, deforestation and ecological destruction of the Amazon rain forest in Brazil accelerated.
Trump describes Bolsonaro as a good friend and great guy and slapped a huge tariff on Brazilian exports to the US as retribution for their courts carrying out the rule of law.
Bolsonaro's 27-year prison sentence could explain Trump's recent reversal on Ukraine and his statement that, "Freedom is more powerful than power". But that assumes Trump is capable of such self-reflection.
Another parallel is the fact that Lula da Silva was president of Brazil from 2003 to 2011 and was widely considered a front-runner for the 2018 presidential election at the time of his arrest. When 'Lula' was prosecuted and imprisoned "significant questions were raised about the political motivations and impartiality of the judge involved, leading to the annulment of his convictions and eventual release."

I hadn't heard any of that. Great story.
We have a new book store opening soon. I will buy Randi’s book as well as Kamala’s book at the grand opening.
I love both these women.
Randi is a brave and dedicated leader for all of us as well as teachers.
Thank you for supporting independent bookstores!

Just ordered Randi's book for my university library! Thanks for this wonderful interview.
And they stayed strong, good early sign. Let's hope it continues!

Adam Kinzinger's Substack post today defends the use of "fascist."

There’s not just right wing antisemitism. I’ve run across many far left who are just as antisemitic. Don’t kid yourself.
