Yes, this is the kind of truth-talk we need. Rick Wilson posted it this am. I still maintain we need new leadership in the House and Senate -- people who understand the threat now, who can understand the complexities of AI and the global economy, etc. etc. There is no shame is stepping aside.

Yes, I saw this earlier today and found it very moving and compelling. Have watched David Jolly for years and I hope this is his moment to step back into politics and help save our Democracy!! Thanks Simon for sharing it again here.

From Jerry Nadler:

The Trump Administration’s Brutal and Reckless Campaign to Strike Fear in Immigrant Communities

Dear Friends,

I am outraged by what is happening in Minnesota and across the country.

Renee Good and Alex Pretti were exercising their rights and ICE murdered them. The Administration immediately lied about the events that took place and slandered the victims.

I have joined Representative Robin Kelly's effort to impeach DHS Secretary Kristi Noem because Secretary Noem must be held accountable for ICE's complete disregard for the law and inhumane treatment of our neighbors.

The Senate will vote on DHS funding this week, and I am urging Senators to vote no. Last week, I delivered remarks on the House Floor on the Department of Homeland Security funding bill.

Rep Nadler speaking on the House Floor.

Below is a full transcript of my remarks, which can also be viewed here:

"I rise in strong opposition to this legislation because I cannot, in good conscience, vote to spend one more cent on ICE. I will not fund an agency that acts like an American Gestapo.

"The Trump Administration has launched a brutal and reckless campaign to strike fear in immigrant communities across the country and ICE is on the front lines, using aggressive and violent tactics that too often end in tragedy.

"I cannot support one more cent for an agency that would recklessly take the life of Renee Good, an innocent and defenseless young woman.

"I cannot support one more cent for masked agents arresting U.S. citizens, pulling people out of their homes, and tearing children away from their parents and stating it is exempt from the Constitutional requirement for search warrants.

"I cannot support one more cent for detention facilities with the highest death rate in decades and that fail to meet the basic medical needs of detainees. No wonder they refuse to allow access to Members of Congress.

"To support one more cent for an agency with such disregard for the rule of law and basic human decency would be a moral outrage.

"Vote no on this legislation."

Sincerely,

Thank you Rep Nadler. Not one more cent for ICE. Not on our dime. Not on our watch.

Not only does this speech need to be seen (heard) and shared, it needs to be EMULATED by Democratic Party leaders at all levels of government.

Juli killgore's avatar

Carolyn I couldn't agree more!

Candace's avatar

Me, either! Yes, all you quiet, milque-toasty, Dems out there. EMULATE!!! (And same to all you addled Republican toadies who know very well he's absolutely right!)

Douglas Cooper's avatar

Strong, gutsy speech. Minnesota Matters!

Kent Boyer's avatar

Damn. Preach. Best speech I've heard in a minute. In our new expression of America, Florida could actually be a leader under Governor Jolly. Imagine that after the rot of DeSantis. What if we had a Congress full of Jollys? Imagine!

Candace's avatar

If we had a Congress full of Jollys we would NOT be in this mess. David's great, I've always loved listening to his POV on various panels. Go David!!! (And please put the obliteration of Alligator Alcatraz near the top of your gubernatorial to-do list.)

Excellent suggestion.

Susan Troy's avatar

Let's all imagine that, and let's all work for the kind of America that spirit, integrity, courage, and compassion would build.

Jolly has our votes. We hope his passion stirs other voters on both sides of the aisle. 🤞

Hell I don't know anything about David Jolly but based on this speech he should run for president in 2 years

OMG, David Jolly speaks everything I feel!

Proud of my Congressman from VA, Don Beyer. He sent us an email today with a link to this video.

Here's the transcript:

The murder of Alex Pretti by CBP is an outrage.

"This is the most horrifying act of our government I’ve ever seen on video.

"Like the murder of Renee Good, eye witness videos prove that [the Department of] Homeland Security is lying about the shooting.

"[In the videos] We see a CBP agent charge a woman who has been filming him. Then he shoves her to the ground and pepper sprays her face.

"Alex Pretti does what you or I would do, he tries to protect her by placing himself between her and the agent, and then struggles to help her to her feet. They both slip on the ice, but Alex continues to shield the woman with his body.

"That’s when we witness the murder. CBP agents pepper spray him, tackle him to the ground, and then shoot him in the back again and again.

"Shots the Department of Homeland Security insanely calls “defensive shots.”

"I’ve called for the resignation of Kristi Noem, and I will vote for her impeachment.

"She’s obstructing local authorities from investigating two murders committed in Minneapolis by DHS agents.

"DHS cannot be allowed to investigate itself. That’s how it’s done in dictatorships, not in America.

"[These DHS agents are] Wearing masks – federal forces are entering people’s homes without warrants, they’re violating our constitutional rights, and sowing division and fear, all to meet a Kristi Noem [deportation] quota.

"Last week, I voted against the bill funding [the Department of] Homeland Security. Now it’s up to the Senate.

"What can you do? It’s time for everyone who believes in the Constitution, the rule of law, and basic human dignity to stand together peacefully against the immorality of this administration."
