Exactly my response. I think Chris Murphy is talking about getting behind a government shut down. I worry about too many Democrats don't understand the gravity of the situation we're in and are far to timid to respond in the way you are suggesting

I like your thinking Simon. Please forward that around to as many people as you know in the Democratic Party.

This is an excellent overview of how we need to be fighting Trump now. I appreciate the examples of how Newsom and Pritzker are standing up to the regime and Trump.

"The best way out is always through."

I also like how you've referred again to the Letter to America. It's not something I've forgotten about. The call for a Letter to America is something that Indivisible Bellingham adopted as a standing action. Scroll down this page to see how they are presenting it:

Now this has the makings of a war room strategy. Absolute agreement here. I’ve been kind of quiet about Jeffries and Schumer but they really need to step up. Pelosi was kind of reluctant in the first term, with first impeachment arriving late. We don’t have the luxury of time. They must step up.

How about “America Powered by the People”.

I like this better than "Restoring the Promise of America" which could be construed as going back to whatever people think we had "before" which I believe is not an option. We have to rewrite the promise of America. There are too many underlying problems that have allowed a regime like Trump's to exist (e.g. Citizen's United).

I'm thinking George McGovern's 1972 campaign slogan: "Come Home, America."

Come home to the ideals, principles and policies that made us great. Come home to decency, compassion and caring for one another.

Excellent suggestion, but I would prefer a couple of synonyms: Liberty and Justice for All. Let’s claim the Pledge of Allegiance as long as we are demonstrating what patriotism looks like.

Great advice. The Party needs to fight Trump on all fronts, party leaders have to.

Voters also want to know where we will lead! Representative Gabe Vasquez (D NM CD2) leads a big caucus proposing sweeping immigration reform, but that's only one issue. Leaders must spread our positive values on tax policy, foreign affairs, labor, farmers. , , ,

!We fight for Familia y Trabajadores!

Thank you Simon for the framework you outlined for our fight back strategy....but it falls short in a major way. What we are challenged to build is a NEW AMERICA (stop quoting from the past except for reminding us all what the Constitution REQUIRES and the Congress must enforce)! What we truly need is a sales pitch that hits all of the ERRORS of the TRUMP administration and the contrast must be "This is what Americans want and need" compared to "This is what TRUMP is doing to destroy our country and our international standing". I am going to use one very simplistic example. High crime rates in highly populated cities and towns is a measure of the struggle of our friends and neighbors to get a good education, to qualify for good paying jobs, to support themselves and their families and to save for future retirement. I am confident you can construct a long list of changes needed to illustrate the ways in which our Federal, State and Local governments can do to support the goals required to reverse these trends. And that says absolutely nothing about the agenda Democrats, working with employers, need to offer to begin now preparing our people and our support systems to address the changes coming with AI. I am not competent to address every major problem TRUMP's policies are creating but what we need is to identify the ones that every day Americans are losing sleep over and hit them with the solutions and the time line.

Surely we can all see what the future holds if we cannot (or will not) address the reals problems we are facing and the array of options available to us to prepare our countrymen for the future.

I have stopped giving money and will not support the current Democratic ineptitude. If a 3rd party is required, then that is what I will support. To say I am sick and tired of the Democratic offensive strategy is not strong enough! We have some very strong and capable spokespersons but someone has to come up with the message and the persuasive voices to carry the message....Governors Pritzer and Newsom illustrate the power of two different approaches but the result is the same....TRUMP IS DESTROYING AMERICA!

Nancy, bring your ideas but do not characterize something that is a discussion draft as "falls short in a major way." No reason to read anything else you write after that, not how we talk to one another here.

Great post Simon! All great ideas. The Maryland federal judge decision was an amazing win, delivered by a Trump judge. He ended with: “Regrettably, this lawsuit effectively pits two of those branches against one another,” “But it is important to remember that, at bottom, all branches — and the public officials who serve in them — share the same core sovereign interest: to support and defend the Constitution.”

We need to brand the Democrats as the defenders of the Constitution and the original ideas that formed our democracy that Trump is shitting all over.

We also need to have some of that new COMMS energy working to revive and support our, "Free press." Instead of counting the lies the media needs to start covering what the truth is, have simulcasts with truth v what Trump is saying and get back to talking about policies and not personalities. Congress is passing major legislation in the dark of the night, we did a good job of uncovering much of what was in the Big,Bad, Bill but there was little media anywhere debating what does a $1 trillion look like? Do you want your community hospitals and healthcare facilities to close? What are we going to do with millions more people depending on Emergency Room care and is that what is best for the nation. By shifting the discussion like this what Democrats stand for becomes clearer.

And Trump just handed the Democrats a big one nationalizing 10% of Intel, the CIA has notoriously killed several leaders in Latin American and Africa for nationalizing businesses.

Just ideas, posing them on.

Made my calls today and adapted some of what Simon said about legislators needing to communicate and oppose every day. Any day of silence is unacceptable. We need a loud but harmonious symphony of voices creating the sounds of opposition every day. In some ways, I'm "preaching to the choir" as my 3 electeds, Raskin, Van Hollen, Alsobrooks plus Gov Wes Moore are doing what they can. I'd like Sen Alsobrooks to be a bit louder but hopefully she will find her outdoor voice.

Trying to do my bit with daily calls, some donations and leading a weekly PB for Abigail S.

Thank you all for what you do.

Need for a party-wide leadership council - yes! This, in a way, answers a question I posed a while ago: who is the Dem in charge when we are out of power? Apparently, no single person, and that huge problem impedes effective resistance.
