Well, when Trump won the first time, got sworn in, and immediately started boasting away, I wrote "This one's for you, Donald" on two pieces of paper, taped them on the front doors of my car, drove into an area that heavily supported him, rolled down my windows, and blasted "You Haven't Done Nothin'" as I drove around, and continued doing it until catharsis was (temporarily) achieved.

I realize it's no longer accurate to say he hasn't done anything (almost all of it bad, of course), but no matter how much he's done, he still brags about having done 100x more (just a couple of hours ago he claimed to have invented--excuse me, "developed"--the term America First), and anyway, defiance is the order of the day, so I'm playing it now, and this one's for you again, 2Dolls, you stupid f.

If he “developed” the slogan America First, he is much older than we thought and possibly now an undead abomination.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the police catch up to him. I remember what happened when they (police? FBI? Homeland Security?) caught up with a left-winger who had killed an invading Proud Boy in Portland--they ambushed and executed him, and no explanation (eg did he have a weapon? Did he raise up?) seemed to be deemed necessary by the media or anyone else. The only rationale required appeared to be that he'd killed a violent white supremacist, so of course he had to die.

FBI is involved, so we'll see if he crosses state lines or is charged with terrorism for that hit-list that was found. I see MN has it's own domestic terrorism charges. "Prohibits committing a felony that is a premeditated act involving violence to persons or property intended to terrorize, intimidate or coerce a considerable number of members of the public; and significantly disrupt or interfere with the operation of government, lawful commerce, or lawful assembly. The offense is punishable by up to 50 percent longer than the statutory maximum for the underlying crime." https://www.icnl.org/resources/terrorism-laws-in-the-united-states

The monarch butterfly sign is the best I’ve seen yet! I work as a scientist to conserve the western monarch overwintering sites and population, the monarchs’ precipitous decline is part of a worldwide biodiversity meltdown driven by global heating, a poisoned environment, and many other factors. Our ability to address these issues, and so many others, through democratic governance and scientific research is at stake (Stand Up For Science!).

As an entomologist, I too made a monarch butterfly sign. I also wore my monarch butterfly dress, because you can't have too many butterflies.

I shared it with a bunch of people who would agree (including a brother in Pacific Grove), then in Philly saw a small variant hand-painted on cardboard (ie The only Monarch I follow" with a very accurate painting of the butterfly below). The very dignified woman carrying it beamed when we asked if we could take a picture; definitely seemed like a case of GMTA...

Hi Simon, I’ve got to say that after listening Kshama Sawant at a conference, and the lack of the Democrats to get Trump removed I’m losing my faith in the party. I believe too many of them are receiving corporate donations and are not looking to make healthy changes within their party. I had hoped that David Hogg would have made some difference, but he doesn’t seem to be getting any support for his efforts. I don’t see any Democrats doing anything to stop Trump or have someone “for the people” in the wings. I’m very disappointed in the whole political system. The corporations are running our country. Money and power have taken over. Our leaders are not for the people any longer. How long have we talked about healthcare for all? How long has the minimum wage not increased? These are some concerns of the PEOPLE. Now it’s up to the PEOPLE to stand up for what all Americans want. In hope I’m wrong, but I just don’t see anyone who I trust to lead our nation!!!

Expand full comment
Leon Rubis's avatar

I see plenty of Democrats speaking up and doing what they can at local, state and federal levels. Hogg, AOC and other young Democrats are being heard. Remember that the reason we don't have better health care, higher federal minimum wage and other much needed reforms is chronic long-term opposition by Republicans.

I think we probably will take the House back. It will probably improve things.

But the fight for justice and democracy will never be *won*. This is a forever fight, that we continue from the generations before us and the next generations will have to carry forward. All we can do is our part. Our part is particularly troublesome right now, to be sure.

A MN house member was assassinated today. Could we not do this?

Expand full comment
Jenny Ellsworth's avatar

Yes, money and power have taken over.

It isn’t up to Democrats or any party to save the country. As you say, it is up to American citizens. Of those citizens who are trying, many are Democrats. But anyone from any party or no party who opposes the sabotage coming from the current administration should do what they can.

We are stuck with a two-party system, so to vote Rs out, we have to vote Ds in. Personally I like the Democratic Party but it isn’t something I have faith in so much as something I work and donate to support.

But D’s *reality* is less exciting than Rs *reality TV*. It’s slow and sometimes boring and doesn’t offer simple answers. We had a great plan to get Trump out of office: win the 2024 presidential election. A lot of people here worked all year to make that happen, with Simon providing focus and optimism and interpretation, but the R’s lies were more appealing than the D’s truths.

I am not sure how exactly you think D’s can get Trump out of office now. Slowing and challenging his efforts is our Plan B, since so many voters either didn’t vote or believed the lies.

As for healthcare, it seems like every Democratic speech that isn’t about ICE is about Medicaid and medical research at Harvard and cuts to the CDC, etc. You must be listening to different sources than me.

Jenny, couldn't agree more. Its Pro Democracy and now plucky couragious patriots, no matter your political stripe.

I was at senior center visiting my mom this evening after the march and got into a discussion with "Jack" who will be 97 in 4 days. Still walking around with a cane and a twinkle in his eye. We got on politics, and he said he was a life long Republican, but that Trump was bad news. Unless you're down the rabbit hole with Trump your either already on the team or about to wake up to it.

Simon you'll love this, Jack also played senior softball until he was 87!
