I think all this data has been well covered here this week.....

ArcticStones's avatar

True. I’ve removed my post.

Susie H's avatar

Thank you, Simon!! Same. Same.

Shane Bryant's avatar

What songs are on everyone’s No Kings playlist today?

ArcticStones's avatar

Carole King’s "Tapestry". ;)

Shane Bryant's avatar

I’m throwing in Metallica’s “King Nothing”,

Stu Weiss's avatar

Grateful Dead - US Blues “Wave that flag🎵, wave it wide, and high….🎶”

Tom Thumb's avatar

Thanks! And definitely. Not only for the song itself, but b/c while it took waaaay too long, they finally, finally made it into the R&R Hall of Fame (the arc of history is long)...

Well, when Trump won the first time, got sworn in, and immediately started boasting away, I wrote "This one's for you, Donald" on two pieces of paper, taped them on the front doors of my car, drove into an area that heavily supported him, rolled down my windows, and blasted "You Haven't Done Nothin'" as I drove around, and continued doing it until catharsis was (temporarily) achieved.

I realize it's no longer accurate to say he hasn't done anything (almost all of it bad, of course), but no matter how much he's done, he still brags about having done 100x more (just a couple of hours ago he claimed to have invented--excuse me, "developed"--the term America First), and anyway, defiance is the order of the day, so I'm playing it now, and this one's for you again, 2Dolls, you stupid f.

Jenny Ellsworth's avatar

If he “developed” the slogan America First, he is much older than we thought and possibly now an undead abomination.

mark haskin's avatar

About America First. It was used extensively by the American Nazis in the 1930s-1940s as they tried to convince America we couldn't beat Hitler and should stay

out of WW2. They expected a Nazi America with them in charge. See Rachael Maddow's new book Prequal. Now MAGA uses it with no shame.

Jenny Ellsworth's avatar

Prequel was awesome. I liked the audiobook because Maddow reads it herself, with her signature amused snark.

So, yeah, I figure if Trump was a leading fascist in the 1930s, he’d have to be at least 120 years old. In which case, he looks very fit!

Tom Thumb's avatar

Lol, a lot older than Biden, for sure, and suspiciously cogent for a “man" his age. GMTA, I'm working on a “poliscifi" novel set roughly 80 years in the future where, among other things, it's generally believed he's undead, nobody ever mentions his name, but people have kept a few of words, like “bigly” and “yuge,” alive, believing that if they use them without giving him credit, at a minimum it will torture him, and best case, will help make him “completely dead.” :D

Please be aware that we have had two Minnesota Democratic legislators and their spouses shot they are reportedly in grave condition. A man dressed up in ice clothing is still at large.

Anne Bear's avatar

Janet, I just saw. I'm just so sick and so sad.

Jan's avatar

I'm so disgusted and sad but I'm headed to the protest!

Anne Bear's avatar

I can’t go due to long established plans, but I’m there in spirit. Please report back. (I feel like we need a little support group of MN Hopium-ers today.)

Jan's avatar

I feel like we need a support group too.❤️

The protest was somber but hopeful!

BeeBeeinNYC's avatar

I am sick to my stomach over this news.

BeeBeeinNYC's avatar

You never know where these responding posts will land. Of course, I was referring to Janet and MN news.

Deborah Potter's avatar

Domestic terrorists need to be brought to justice!

ArcticStones's avatar

They need to call this what it is: Assassination. (Not just "targeted shooting".)

Deborah Potter's avatar

When the assassin is apprehended, the statements should get bolder.

Anne Bear's avatar

The Star Tribune headline says "assassinated."

SW's avatar

Robert Young Pelton is going to cover it, but not immediately (mourning, hospitalized recovering). Link to one of his posts.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the police catch up to him. I remember what happened when they (police? FBI? Homeland Security?) caught up with a left-winger who had killed an invading Proud Boy in Portland--they ambushed and executed him, and no explanation (eg did he have a weapon? Did he raise up?) seemed to be deemed necessary by the media or anyone else. The only rationale required appeared to be that he'd killed a violent white supremacist, so of course he had to die.

Anne Bear's avatar

I'm waiting for the media to ask every single Republican if they are going to de-escalate violent rhetoric.

Tom Thumb's avatar

Agreed, Annie. They may need to take a couple of baby steps first, though, eg have any GOP electeds acknowledged and condemned what happened in MN? Or would it offend the MAGA base and get them primaried if they sound too much like they believe Democrats have a right to life?

Anne Bear's avatar

I haven't seen anything outside of "Trump's" statement and Tom Emmer, who issued a joint statement with Klobuchar

BeeBeeinNYC's avatar

How much you wanna bet that in the end Trump will pardon the guy (if he's still alive and goes to trial).

Deborah Potter's avatar

Nope, I have Hopium that justice will prevail.

Tom Thumb's avatar

One thing's for sure. If he does, God won't be pardoning him.

Kathy P's avatar

A president can’t pardon state criminals.

BeeBeeinNYC's avatar

There IS a GOD after all!

Deborah Potter's avatar

FBI is involved, so we'll see if he crosses state lines or is charged with terrorism for that hit-list that was found. I see MN has it's own domestic terrorism charges. "Prohibits committing a felony that is a premeditated act involving violence to persons or property intended to terrorize, intimidate or coerce a considerable number of members of the public; and significantly disrupt or interfere with the operation of government, lawful commerce, or lawful assembly. The offense is punishable by up to 50 percent longer than the statutory maximum for the underlying crime." https://www.icnl.org/resources/terrorism-laws-in-the-united-states

orange monarch said “I have been briefed on the terrible shooting that took place in Minnesota, which appears to be a targeted attack against State Lawmakers. Our Attorney General, Pam Bondi, and the FBI, are investigating the situation, and they will be prosecuting anyone involved to the fullest extent of the law,” said Trump’s statement Saturday.

Deborah Potter's avatar

Suspect has been caught, and state criminal charges were filed by Prosecutors in Hennepin County -- two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.

Mark Ohm's avatar

The man was dressed as a police officer with a vehicle that looked police-ish. Not ICE. He had a “list” in his vehicle of politicians to attempt to assassinate. You can find out more info here, direct from the governor’s press conference: https://www.youtube.com/live/VHtHNAbFnow?si=vAYMFv6XdfqFtcCk

I have to express my horror at this news. I love Minnesota, my family there, and her people. What a senseless tragedy. My prayers are with all of you. 💔🙏🏼

Stu Weiss's avatar

The monarch butterfly sign is the best I’ve seen yet! I work as a scientist to conserve the western monarch overwintering sites and population, the monarchs’ precipitous decline is part of a worldwide biodiversity meltdown driven by global heating, a poisoned environment, and many other factors. Our ability to address these issues, and so many others, through democratic governance and scientific research is at stake (Stand Up For Science!).

Juli Gould's avatar

As an entomologist, I too made a monarch butterfly sign. I also wore my monarch butterfly dress, because you can't have too many butterflies.

Stu Weiss's avatar

Never too many butterflies. But they are disappearing at a frightening rate.

Juli Gould's avatar

When my husband was a boy living in western NY the monarchs would blacken the sky on their migration south. Nothing like that anymore. Very sad.

Tom Thumb's avatar

I shared it with a bunch of people who would agree (including a brother in Pacific Grove), then in Philly saw a small variant hand-painted on cardboard (ie The only Monarch I follow" with a very accurate painting of the butterfly below). The very dignified woman carrying it beamed when we asked if we could take a picture; definitely seemed like a case of GMTA...

Hi Simon, I’ve got to say that after listening Kshama Sawant at a conference, and the lack of the Democrats to get Trump removed I’m losing my faith in the party. I believe too many of them are receiving corporate donations and are not looking to make healthy changes within their party. I had hoped that David Hogg would have made some difference, but he doesn’t seem to be getting any support for his efforts. I don’t see any Democrats doing anything to stop Trump or have someone “for the people” in the wings. I’m very disappointed in the whole political system. The corporations are running our country. Money and power have taken over. Our leaders are not for the people any longer. How long have we talked about healthcare for all? How long has the minimum wage not increased? These are some concerns of the PEOPLE. Now it’s up to the PEOPLE to stand up for what all Americans want. In hope I’m wrong, but I just don’t see anyone who I trust to lead our nation!!!

Leon Rubis's avatar

I see plenty of Democrats speaking up and doing what they can at local, state and federal levels. Hogg, AOC and other young Democrats are being heard. Remember that the reason we don't have better health care, higher federal minimum wage and other much needed reforms is chronic long-term opposition by Republicans.

Michael G Baer's avatar

Chris Murphy, Maxwell Frost, Alex Padilla, Gavin Newsom... Resolve, Persistance, Courage in the face of fear and violence. Don't capitualate in advance.

Veronica's avatar

Those are our modern-day heroes.

Sheila's avatar

That’s what I use to think. I hope I’m wrong. Maybe if the Dems get the house things will improve!!!

Jenny Ellsworth's avatar

I think we probably will take the House back. It will probably improve things.

But the fight for justice and democracy will never be *won*. This is a forever fight, that we continue from the generations before us and the next generations will have to carry forward. All we can do is our part. Our part is particularly troublesome right now, to be sure.

Janet Frohnmayer's avatar

Kshama Sawant got into official leadership in liberal Seattle, as a city council member, and people very soon grew very weary of her. I like to stay open to many points of view but not everyone deserves our attention.

Michael G Baer's avatar

Sheila !!! Really?! On today of all days? Are you hitting the streets or being a roman "hypocrite" in the archaic meaning of sitting in the back of the gallery and criticizing? aka " a big bag of downers?"

There are some great leaders and the true ones will emerge in time to be the next president, but come on... TODAY IS OUR DAY to shine, to show resolve, to be patriots.

She (if she is a person and not a bot) is trying to ruin the mood and waste our time, evidently

Anne Bear's avatar

A MN house member was assassinated today. Could we not do this?

Jenny Ellsworth's avatar

Yes, money and power have taken over.

It isn’t up to Democrats or any party to save the country. As you say, it is up to American citizens. Of those citizens who are trying, many are Democrats. But anyone from any party or no party who opposes the sabotage coming from the current administration should do what they can.

We are stuck with a two-party system, so to vote Rs out, we have to vote Ds in. Personally I like the Democratic Party but it isn’t something I have faith in so much as something I work and donate to support.

But D’s *reality* is less exciting than Rs *reality TV*. It’s slow and sometimes boring and doesn’t offer simple answers. We had a great plan to get Trump out of office: win the 2024 presidential election. A lot of people here worked all year to make that happen, with Simon providing focus and optimism and interpretation, but the R’s lies were more appealing than the D’s truths.

I am not sure how exactly you think D’s can get Trump out of office now. Slowing and challenging his efforts is our Plan B, since so many voters either didn’t vote or believed the lies.

As for healthcare, it seems like every Democratic speech that isn’t about ICE is about Medicaid and medical research at Harvard and cuts to the CDC, etc. You must be listening to different sources than me.

Tom Thumb's avatar

If he screws enough of the people who voted for him badly enough, it might not be as hard as it seems (see Ukraine 2004 and especially 2014)

Michael G Baer's avatar

Jenny, couldn't agree more. Its Pro Democracy and now plucky couragious patriots, no matter your political stripe.

I was at senior center visiting my mom this evening after the march and got into a discussion with "Jack" who will be 97 in 4 days. Still walking around with a cane and a twinkle in his eye. We got on politics, and he said he was a life long Republican, but that Trump was bad news. Unless you're down the rabbit hole with Trump your either already on the team or about to wake up to it.

Simon you'll love this, Jack also played senior softball until he was 87!

Susan R Pynchon's avatar

This time Trump is pretty insolated from removal with all the bootlickers he's assembled around him. The Democrats are speaking up more a ton than corporate media is showing us

OH MY GAUD!!!! That is horrible we have lost a member of the MN State legislator and her husband. Heartbreaking. I hope they find the SOB and everyone involved. Stay safe everyone. We have our car rally/protest at 3 today. Car is decorated and ready to go. Will update tonight.

PEACE OUT. Be brave.

Today is the day. I pray for rain... hard rain on Trump's parade to wash away the first layer of corruption and injustice out of DC.

I pray for peaceful, safety throughout the land as we exercise our right of free speech and assembly and redress of injustice,

and I'd like to kick it off with a song

EVEN THE WEATHER REPORT for Washington DC is political!

(Because the weather gods are anti-Trump activists and Reality has a liberal bias.)
