Honoring, And Dishonoring, Memorial Day
While we honor those who sacrificed for us it is hard not to feel the weight of the historic betrayal we face every day......
Happy Memorial Day everyone. Over the years our family has often headed to the Mall on Memorial Day to pay our respects to those fought and died for us. In the years when he was healthy, and it wasn’t too hot, we would bring our English Bulldog, Tug, along too. As English Bulldogs are the official mascot of The Marines, Tug got be a minor celebrity for a day, and always got lots of photos, head rubs, and attaboys with and from those who served.
Here are some photos from our Memorial Day walks on the Mall……

Here is a video from the Vietnam Memorial, Memorial Day 2024. Something like this is probably happening right now, this morning:
Here are the final passages of the Gettysburg Address we often cite here (new birth of freedom) from the wall of the Lincoln Memorial:
So as we honor the bravery, and courage, and sacrifice of those who fought for us, we also cannot escape the historic dishonor being shown to them and to our great American democracy every day by the current occupier of the White House.
I will spare us more images of this historic, ongoing betrayal this morning, and end with this inspiring passage from FDR from his Memorial:
And while we couldn’t find any photos of Tug walking with us on the Mall, I send along a few photos of him today. He was one of the great ones, and he is missed every day here at our home.

Tug passed early last year at the remarkable age of twelve and a half, ancient for a bull dog. I appreciate everyone allowing him to be part of our Memorial Day here at Hopium.
To take action on behalf of our candidates head back to yesterday’s post:
And if you haven’t read it I strong encourage everyone here to read Ken Martin’s message about the big takeaways from the after action report process. Not the controversy itself, but the lessons learned - for that is what really matters to us in 2026 and beyond.
Keep working hard all. We have a country to save, patriots to honor, and elections to win, together - Simon

When I feel like giving up this fite I think of my German grandfather who jumped ship in NYC after he was told everyone in his submarine had to join the NAZI party or be arrested. He later signed up to serve w/US troops and fought for the Allied forces in the Philippines.
As we honor and remember what Abraham Lincoln called "the last full measure of devotion", let us also remember that we are doing this work, at least in part, to honor their sacrifice and to ensure that it was not in vain. I continue to be a proud member of this Hopium community and it is my honor to work beside you all in this fight for our country. Onward!
