And the horrible part is that the Big Ugly Bill gave ICE $75 billion up front, so if the DHS is funded, ICE will keep going but its other operations, like FEMA, won't. Here's an explainer from Jay Kuo. https://statuskuo.substack.com/p/i-need-to-correct-an-error
I am so sorry I donated money to Tom Suozzi who voted for the bill that passed the House yesterday with 7 dem votes to INCREASE funding to ICE. I'm so very disappointed in him.
They set the precedent with PBS and NPR, so the answer has to be yes. Whether there's a veto-proof majority for it is another matter.
At this point, what might be more realistic is for state and local law enforcement to start arresting these guys and locking them up. Probably would need a lot of firepower or the element of surprise to pull that off, though. Arrest warrants for the higher ups across the blue states (plus the purple ones where Dems are atty generals, eg WI, MI, PA, and NC) would send an even clearer message to the whole country, and wouldn't require a shootout at the local OK Corral.
Whatever we do, we can't just look like victims. That just looks weak and plays into the Republican Strong, Democrat Weak narrative that's consistently allowed the R's to punch well above the weight of actual support for their policies
Me too Pamela - I'm FURIOUS. I just contacted Durbin and Duckworth and said I understand they're not in the majority, but we need them to lead like Newsom is. Get loud, cuss and kick and carry on. This is a national emergency.
Either ICE will withdraw, or Walz will call our the Minnesota Guard, which will hopefully head off the impeding invasion of federal troops into that city. Pritzker and other governors of nearby states should likewise muster their troops at the border.
I hope so Leigh. They wanna play army? We, the good people of America, have armies at our ready too. I'm going to call Gov Pritzker (I'm in IL) right now and suggest it.
Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted
And this one?
Amendment V
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
And one more time
Amendment IV
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
And this one, I don’t think summary execution is part of the process……
Amendment VI
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense.
I think it's time for Gov. Walz to order his National Guard out to protect the citizens of Minnesota from our own government. This is a national emergency and cannot continue. Damn Trump. Damn ICE Barbie. And damn these assholes and thugs cosplaying Gestapo. Enough.
Here is the email that I just sent to my 3 GOP stooges who allegedly represent me from Iowa:
“ [Senator/Congresswomn], it is not acceptable to continue defending Operation Metro Surge.
Tell Donold Trump, Greg Bovino, Kristi Noem, Stephen Miller and the rest of this sociopathic mob that enough is enough and you will no longer stand silent and complicit to the senseless violence in a great American city.
We see the murders of our fellow citizens on livestreams. They are indefensible.
So why are you allowing this administration’s lies and terrorism? History will judge your cruelty and cowardice, but you can begin to redeem yourself as soon as you begin to speak up for what’s right.”
(For despicable Grassley, I also added that I would not accept his usual BS that sanctuary cities are the cause of this situation).
Yikes! 7 Dems joined the House Republicans in ok vote on the ICE budget....is this latest murder going to get some Senate Republicans to vote with Dem Senators??? United front of governors, etc. IS important in this fight.
They must be defunded and get out of everywhere. It is past time. I think this is a fair statement on this at this point. It is what I think:
Masked thugs on the streets of our cities for absolutely zero good reason, they are there as a propaganda effort to bolster some ego somewhere. There are other less harmful more effective ways to aprehend and detain or deport "the worst of the worst", and this operation is killing ordinary citizen protesters in the street, who are protesting against thugs harming normal life (and the economy) of their city in the process. There is no legitimate reason for this to be happening and it must stop.
I have called DC and have urged others to do so using your thoughts about trying to be considerate in the hope it will be received well. I posted the phones of the Ds who voted to fund ICE. STOP ICE NOW. The murders must stop. Also I called Jeffries, Schumer and my Senators.
Can we still call them even if we don't live in their districts or their states? I've heard that reps and senators won't take calls/messages from anyone who's not a constituent.
They might take them if you’re leaving voice mail, but the impact will be zero--thanks to the fact that every Congressperson represemts 2-3 times the number of people that Senators from the largest state represented in the founders era, they have theit hands far more than full just attending to their constituents, and Senators have it even worse.
This is a waste of time. They don't care about your call if you are not a constituent. It's not recorded and they don't care. We need to focus on what comes next and not on what has already happened. May feel good but it's not moving the ball down the playing field.
Exactly. They all don't care: (1) the administration which doubles down in the face of protests, etc.; (2) the Democrats in Congress claiming they have no power because they are not the majority and yet members break ranks and vote to fund ICE. Go figure; and, (3) the millions who don't vote. If all of them don't care and they are all in a position to make a difference, what does that mean for the opposition? Futile effort to save those who don't care about saving themselves or, worst, fight against it??
People have phone numbers from everywhere. Do they have a database to exclude one or another comment based on area codes not in their district? I have friends in my city with area codes from all over the country.
We have gone over this a million times here. They will attempt to establish that you a constituent. See your number, ask your zip code, name, address etc. If it is not clear you are constituent the calls will not be logged. It has to be this way or these offices will get overwhelmed with calls from people all over the country who they do not represent.
They represent who pays. They can read the polls and vote the way they do for whatever reasons they have regardless of constituents. We donate to campaigns all over the country, even if they are not our reps. I will move on.
They both need some "fire in the belly" in dealing with today's Republican Party! I do wish the Democratic leadership would use effective speakers such as Pete Buttigieg, Gavin Newsom, et al, to push back on Republican idiocy!!!
I also want to say that I know times are fraught right now but it's a bit weird after what happened today to have your immediate reaction be to get mad at Democrats, and not the regime itself. We didn't do this. We didn't enable it. They are doing this, and folks need to keep focused on the mission.
What I am focused on and have been all week is how do we stop this, and what I've been arguing for, repeatedly, is that we must organize ourselves differently, learning from the Europeans, and do so to give ourselves more power to actually rein ICE in. Calling House Dems who voted for the bill last week does nothing to deal with what it's in front of us. It's a distraction.
Does the bill go back to the House if there are changes (that we should be demanding from the Senate) to the bill as passed in the House? Maybe some of this will get another vote? I know we should not disagree with your thinking on these things.
Thanks Simon, this is so needed right now. I have to channel my rage. I'm following along on Bluesky.
OK, it didn't really work but I tried.
No, it did work!! I'm so glad for this post. Thank you!
Ok.
i wasn't in favor of shutting down the federal gov't again to defund ICE.
But if they are going to indiscriminately kill Americans, then yes, lets defund our executioners by any means.
I'm not certain if it's still possible to do this tho
If the Senate won't vote to pass the appropriations bills? I think the govt shuts down again? Someone with more knowledge than me comment?
just the parts that don't have appropriations yet. So not all of the government at this point.
I saw an AOC post that suggests that DHS/ICE funding hasn't passed the Senate yet. so there's a chance.
of course, the felon's regime will say they are essential employees & they'll violate our rights despite not knowing when their next paycheck is.

Is a rescission an option?

I have never been filled with so much despair as I have had for the past 10 days.
Me too Pamela - I'm FURIOUS. I just contacted Durbin and Duckworth and said I understand they're not in the majority, but we need them to lead like Newsom is. Get loud, cuss and kick and carry on. This is a national emergency.
Speaking out in opposition with one voice is the only rational response.
Is there an option of a government shut down? Could the Senate refuse to fund the govt until ICE is abolished? Thanks.
I hope so! And maybe a couple Republicans will find their balls. This is making me furious.
More likely ovaries, actually.
Either ICE will withdraw, or Walz will call our the Minnesota Guard, which will hopefully head off the impeding invasion of federal troops into that city. Pritzker and other governors of nearby states should likewise muster their troops at the border.

Elbows up, Kent. Now's the time if there ever was one.
How about this one?
Amendment VIII
Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted
And this one?
Amendment V

Thanks, Simon, for showing and telling the world is so many different forums and media. Truth matters.
I think it's time for Gov. Walz to order his National Guard out to protect the citizens of Minnesota from our own government. This is a national emergency and cannot continue. Damn Trump. Damn ICE Barbie. And damn these assholes and thugs cosplaying Gestapo. Enough.
And, a pox on the houses of those who voted for the evil orange menace!
Here is the email that I just sent to my 3 GOP stooges who allegedly represent me from Iowa:

FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION:
LOCK UP ICE.
Clear these corrupt thugs from our streets.
TO would-be Democratic leaders: STEP OUT NOW. NO MORE DOLLARS. SHUT THE AMERICA-HATERS DOWN. Lock them in their own detention camps.
Yikes! 7 Dems joined the House Republicans in ok vote on the ICE budget....is this latest murder going to get some Senate Republicans to vote with Dem Senators??? United front of governors, etc. IS important in this fight.
Why did they? Clearly Jeffries is not able to whip the Democrats. New leadership now?
That video is horrifying. That is a murder. Those guys need to be arrested NOW.
They must be defunded and get out of everywhere. It is past time. I think this is a fair statement on this at this point. It is what I think:

Headed downtown for an ICE protest that was just called in Sacramento. Will report back.
I have called DC and have urged others to do so using your thoughts about trying to be considerate in the hope it will be received well. I posted the phones of the Ds who voted to fund ICE. STOP ICE NOW. The murders must stop. Also I called Jeffries, Schumer and my Senators.
Rep. Cuellar TX 202-225-1640
Rep. Golden ME 202-225-6306
Rep. Perez WA 202-225-3536

How do they know if you are not a constituent? Look up a zip code. The polls should give them a clue. Are they not recording comments?
They can see your phone number when you call.
People have phone numbers from everywhere. Do they have a database to exclude one or another comment based on area codes not in their district? I have friends in my city with area codes from all over the country.

And Senators are changing their votes on DHS now, I read, even though Alex Jeffrey Pretti is not their constituent.
I still write / call Schumer and Jeffries as our Leaders in the Senate/House respectively. They need to hear from the Dems in the grassroots.
They both need some "fire in the belly" in dealing with today's Republican Party! I do wish the Democratic leadership would use effective speakers such as Pete Buttigieg, Gavin Newsom, et al, to push back on Republican idiocy!!!
