Including the part that makes clear that all voter suppression of any kind is prohibited and states that allow it are to lose representation to the extent that they do!
Lying is most definitely voter suppression and voter fraud--in Ukraine it will get you overthrown, in England it can void your election, and Wales just became the first country to criminally sanction politicians for lying, a move the Toronto Star, among others, celebrated as "putting the great back in Great Britain."
Ahh, a P.K.! My late husband was an Episcopal Priest who also spoke truth to power. It led for some interesting coffee hour discussions. Bishop Budde is just doing what any good follower of the teachings of Christ would do, reminding people of those teachings. It was powerful and humble at the same time.
This took courage. We should all take courage from her as well. We don’t have to obey. We don’t have to give in. We can stand for our principles and we are not alone.
New damning information came out on Hegseth. His ex-sister-in-law signed a sworn affidavit stating that Hegseth abused his second wife - her sister. She even had a safe word to say to her sister when he became violent with her. She would lock herself in the closet. I have been calling my Senator who is unfortunately McConnell, but I have also called Joni Ernst and other republican senators. We all need to call. The vote will be for the whole senate on Thursday.
As a lifelong Episcopalian, I was so proud to see this. Bishop Budde is an extraordinary person - she was also the one who spoke out against Trump's disgraceful photo op in front of the church after clearing the way by pepper spraying peaceful protesters. As the Bishop of Washington, and head of the National Cathedral, she is one of the outstanding leaders of the church. Her message more than fulfilled any hope I would have had for how she would handle this opportunity.
So well said, Denise. I was raised Episcopalian and Bishop Budde has made me very proud. Could it be that my values came from Sunday school? I have to laugh at that, because no evangelical considers me a Christian. Oh well, I don’t care what they think. I want to be like Bishop Budde.
I was thinking that she was the one who stood up to Trump when they pepper sprayed protesters. Thanks for confirming it.
The world would be in a better place if more religious leaders were in the mold of Bishop Budde and fewer like Franklin Graham and other hypocrites of his ilk.
My parents used to attend Episcopal Church, but left when I was a child because of its support for LGBTQ causes. They joined an evangelical church and are 3x Trump voters. Ironically the anti-gay attitude I grew up with is a part of why I turned against the religion and politics of my family.
They aren't used to having their privilege challenged or questioned. Those expressions of uncomfortable rage, superiority, squirmy surprise, and oh yes, they had to hear her speak the truth in a calm and heartfelt manner, in public display. Brilliant!
The founder of C-SPAN launched the channel with the intention of showing ALL government proceedings, rallies, congressional sessions, and more from a neutral, unbiased perspective. No punditry or so-called analysis. This is probably the only channel where we can get the full, unfiltered truth--and picture--on what's happening in politics and government.
The side eyes by Vance, Tiffany and Melania were the worst. They are such sad and backward people! None of them have any concept of what it means to show empathy!
It doesn't matter that the message didn't get to Trump and his group, we heard it. We've seen the shared posts, and video on the network news. We all saw it. We witnessed the bravery of this one woman. Let's all be inspired.
Agree. Yes, she hoped her message resonated with Trump, but she was really showing Americans, specifically those who claim their Christianity, the way forward.
Yes, and that is why what Rev. Budde did is so important. Think of it this way. On the morning of his first full day in office, Donald Trump was humiliated by a woman. His attack on her, and all of us can keep the story alive.
I didn't see that expression on Ivanka's face. Her expression seemed more thoughtful, like she was listening. I don't think too much of her, but she didn't appear to be acting like the others.
Eric seemed to be listening. Usha Vance more than J.D., who whispered something to her. Trump himself looked out of it, vacant eyes, until he turned away. Did anyone see the audience all the way through?
Thank you for sharing a more complete clip of what she said than legacy news has been showing. This was a heartfelt, eloquent, and very brave message to Trump (and the nation). It should be shared widely.
Yes, and we can share the video. I'm also mailing a thank you note: Mariann Edgar Budde, Episcopal Diocese of Washington DC, 3101 Wisconsin Ave., Washington DC 20116. We can counter the attacks she is receiving from MAGA
Thank you for posting the address. I shall write to them! I listened to the entire service and when the bishop began speaking her sermon, I was so riveted… And I cried and I cried, so touched to hear those words of truth as she spoke of unity - as she said: “unity to serve the common good… Unity is not partisan “…. When I lived in Virginia, as an Episcopalian, I used to go to The Washington National Cathedral for different kinds of workshops. It’s a wonderful space.🙏❤️
Thanks Kate for the suggestion and the address. Because of the potential of terrorists mailing deadly substances in letters, I usually write postcards as thank you notes to politicians and other public figures.
I have the perfect postcard too. The front side is an inspirational quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr:
"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
Cheryl, I too always send postcards to people in government in DC because of the extra security needed for envelopes. and you've got a good one.
For this one, I wanted to write more than what would fit on a postcard, and have it feel more personal. I really urge people to sit down, and write something rather than sending an email. It's just not the same. For all of the people who have been asking, "What can I do?" Well this is something, and I think it has more value than people realize.
Kate, I have LOTS of practice writing legibly with really small printing 😊
Here's what I fit on my "half-back" postcard:
Dear Bishop Budde,
Thank you so much for speaking truth to power with respect to protecting the most vulnerable amongst us. You displayed amazing courage against a vengeful bully who equates "punching down" as strength. Your calm dignity and grace showed all of us the way forward in the difficult times ahead. Please know that your words strengthened my resolve NOT to "obey in advance".
Cheryl, great postcards. I just ordered 100 thinking my friends would be more likely to write to their Representatives or Senators if I can give them something to make it easy. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing this information. I just wrote her a note of thanks. And just happened to have note cards with the Hokusai woodcut, "Under the Wave"--the picture of the big blue wave breaking. It seemed appropriate.
I am SO happy and thankful that you sent this out to us. I watched none of the proceedings yesterday...in fact, didn't turn on the TV at all - although I now get 98% of my news information from online news sources. You are the oasis in our current desert and I hope you know how valuable and treasured you are to these times we are going through.
I am so proud of the Bishop and the Washington diocese. Our Bishop of LA Diocese, John Taylor, also put out a great piece on FB on Sunday. I'm a PK (preacher's kid) as well, of the Lutheran variety, switched to Episcopal thirty+ years ago. My experience with my Dad and his friends is that they protested the Vietnam War, supported Dr. King and the civil rights movement, participated in boycotts for Cesar Chavez's workers. (For which we were harassed by the John Birch Society and the FBI.) I hope this breaks thru to some people. The National Cathedral was my online church during covid. The faith based groups - with the exceptions of those supporting Project 2025 - need to step up, as we might be the last line of defense since the secular institutions have failed.
I am proud of and grateful for Bishop Bundee...a remarkable woman whose courage, grace, mastery, and leadership should ignite courage in all of us in the coming years. The behavior of the "First" and "Second" families---the sneers and haughty, superior looks---were not surprising but certainly appalling.
I don’t think these are very smart people. And poor little Tiffany. Second daughter. Money doesn’t buy everything. Well, maybe it could buy her cheekbones. As my mother would say..Meow!
I think the U.S. is in a major fight about what its values are going to be. And I think the movie It’s a Wonderful Life sets out beautifully the choice we are facing. Do we want Pottersville, or George Bailey’s Bedford Falls? That’s the choice before us now.
She wasn't giving him a pass, she was calling him out.
A very powerful message!
And you would certainly know, my dear friend. 🥰
I'm proud to be an Episcopalian. My Dad was an Episcopal minister. TESTIFY!
I’m Episcopalian too! Just posted the same thing. But, no ministers in my family. Let’s please stand up for the 14th amendment as well.
Sheesh. This is even worse than I thought it would be.
Including the part that makes clear that all voter suppression of any kind is prohibited and states that allow it are to lose representation to the extent that they do!

Ya! Speaking truth to power, for real ❤️
This took courage. We should all take courage from her as well. We don’t have to obey. We don’t have to give in. We can stand for our principles and we are not alone.
I agree. Probably not.
They don’t.

Notably, the FBI was provided this information which was omitted from their report. Sound familiar?
I read elsewhere that the FBI didn’t even bother to interview Hegseth’s accusers.
That was fabulous. We need more people to stand up to tRump and his cronies.
I agree. But my reference to the above mentioned would mot be as polite. You are a nicer person than me, Sherry.

I wish my family was more tolerant. 💔
I know you would receive a warm welcome at any Episcopal Church. ☺️
Thank you!
I loved it even if he and most of his family did not listen
They aren't used to having their privilege challenged or questioned. Those expressions of uncomfortable rage, superiority, squirmy surprise, and oh yes, they had to hear her speak the truth in a calm and heartfelt manner, in public display. Brilliant!
The cspan videos was great. Other videos only showed bishop
I've seen videos that included the audience. The looks of Trump, Vance, and the Trump family are priceless.
I totally agree! No wonder he doesn't go to church
The side eyes by Vance, Tiffany and Melania were the worst. They are such sad and backward people! None of them have any concept of what it means to show empathy!

Resonate with Trump? It made him angry. He'd put her in prison if he could.
The real hope is that it resonates with other people.
Yes, and that is why what Rev. Budde did is so important. Think of it this way. On the morning of his first full day in office, Donald Trump was humiliated by a woman. His attack on her, and all of us can keep the story alive.
The smirks on that awful family. Especially Lara and Tiffany this time. Like a terrible, raunchy soap opera.
I didn't see that expression on Ivanka's face. Her expression seemed more thoughtful, like she was listening. I don't think too much of her, but she didn't appear to be acting like the others.

She is our hero!!

The Cspan link is what I have shared today.

Great!
Thanks! I just ordered some of these postcards.
Great!

The most hopeful and courageous thing I’ve seen in a quite awhile.

Melania especially. She looked like she was sucking on a sour lemon. Her face had a very hard look.
I noticed that she had the same expression as the thing.
I don’t think these are very smart people. And poor little Tiffany. Second daughter. Money doesn’t buy everything. Well, maybe it could buy her cheekbones. As my mother would say..Meow!
I think she looks like that a lot. Must be terrifying to be so rich!
And, at the same time, always on the brink of bankruptcy and/or at the mercy of Russian and Chinese thugs you owe hundreds of millions to.
She’s a hard woman. And, yes, sour.
Welll done! Thank you for having the courage to speak truth to the “most powerful men” in the world.
I think the U.S. is in a major fight about what its values are going to be. And I think the movie It’s a Wonderful Life sets out beautifully the choice we are facing. Do we want Pottersville, or George Bailey’s Bedford Falls? That’s the choice before us now.
Aka: "culture wars."
