Simon, Are we headed towards an economic depression the likes of which we've not seen since 1929? All this economic news highlights DJT's bullshit approach and benign policies to, and comfort with, denying the existence of his bankruptcy history. We can't wait to vote him out of office.
It would be karma for all the times Trump warned voters Biden and Harris would tank the economy. But that would be well-deserved in light of Trump's historic damage to this country for generations.
Marc Elias in the Democracy Docket is also citing the Purcell Principle as a necessity to delay new maps until 2028 in the South. Although I will also say the ruling may facilitate redistricting across the country through litigation after the midterms, so whoever wins in 2026 will have a structural advantage to redraw the maps in general.
Right now, Republicans have control of 57 state legislative chambers to the Democrats' 39. Whatever can be said about now, that advantage needs to be reversed when all is said and done in November. The 2026 BLUEMAP plan is set for the Democratic Party if anyone is interested. More details to come at an appropriate time.
It'll be hard, and the GOP might not care in its efforts to try anyways, but we can still block a lot of new Southern maps, using the Purcell Principle, from being used in 2026.
Librarian note: the Purcell Principle is the doctrine that courts should not change election rules too close to an election, because of the risk of causing confusion. :)
Always great to have a dictionary around for these moments.
In real life, that would include trying to change the maps in Louisiana 2 days before early voting begins as overseas ballots are already sent out. Or in Georgia as they undergo their first week of early voting for the primaries.
The GOP used this argument for years to say we can't change maps at the campaign filing deadlines, never mind primary voting. Voting rights leaders and Democrats should fight these chaotic last-minute changes tooth-and-nail.
Follow Paul Krugman to get the best understanding of economics (I've been following him since I was undergrad economics major).
As for an economic depression like 1929, the short answer is "No."
The longer answer is "A 1929 Great Depression is not impossible, but it would require catastrophic mismanagement by Trump and complacency or inaction by the rest of society.
What's much more likely is an economic downturn. Anything from a mild recession to a major one comparable to the post 2008 Financial Crisis or Covid. So bad, but not "25% unemployment rate" bad.
I think all of that is right except we are making so many bad decisions, including harming science and education, that the economic impacts will be profound and long lasting. The cost will be slow to materialize.
Agreed, damage Trump is doing will have long term impacts. We can still hope that a strong Democratic win in 2026, and critically, 2028, will allow us to not only reverse his terrible decisions, renew our investments, but that we can also pass institutional reforms that will safegaurd the changes we make (e.g. expand SCOTUS to an enduring liberal majority and tell Republicans "if this upsets you, pass constitutional amendments to make SCOTUS operate fairly with regular turnover of justices every two years.")
Tell this to Trump supporters!! It is definitely a cult!! There are supporters who post on X everyday!! I see what they write. It sickens me!! Sometimes I respond. I try to open their eyes!! It’s the same people!! I’m convinced they all watch Fox News. It bothers me so much that this network is allowed to spew its lies and propaganda. It’s also obvious that Oligarchs are controlling these media outlets. They give Trump a platform to spew his lies and they praise him!! Thank goodness most of the country sees through this insurrectionist!! This ego driven, totally unfit madman!!!
Hey Anne, Go to SETTINGS in your Substack account. If you have signed up for any substack newsletter you have an account. Go to your settings and re-set your email. Simon can't do it; you have to do it. Hope that helps.
As long as we get that very much needed ballroom built though, eh??
All else pales in comparison.
Just think of all that gaudy and tacky gold leaf and granite and marble that the taxpayer is being given the great privilege of forking out millions and millions of dollars for.
Now we're stuck with "problematic Platner," aka Fetterman 2.0. It doesn't matter how his past actions pale in comparison to the Republicans, they are going to do a non-stop negative assault on his candidacy. And the problem with outsiders is they are rarely fully vetted. Only Republicans get to be total fuck-ups and still win elections, wish Democrats understood this.
I don't believe Graham Platner is in any way another Fetterman. Further, any candidate is going to face a hefty negative ad campaign. Perhaps we should stand behind Platner and stop being so negative about his candidacy.
As a leftist myself, I hope he does well. I just wish that we'd have less problematic "outsider" candidates because we always get the fallout. Republicans don't.
no one from maine is gonna be all that far left; i spend summers there, have for decades now; when i take walks, a lot of the of the houses have "security by smith and wesson" signs....my bil has a bullseye in his backyard to practice his shooting skills....so, don't expect a far left candidate to emerge. of course, they will paint platner as one anyway.....plus all the stupid things he has said and done in the past. but he does seem to resonate with the crowd up there.
He does resonate. The more you know the more you love about him. There are lots of progressives here in our state. Southern Maine (CD 1) will vote him in by large numbers. He might even take our rural 2nd district. Feeling positive today now that he’s our candidate for certain.
Mainer here. I appreciate your perspective but Graham is building a coalition/following from a very diverse demographic. Young people, old people, feminists, union members, men, the working class, progressives, Indies. I am pretty sure he will get a good share of disgusted Rs as well. His strengths far outweigh his words from the past or a few current gaffs. Collins is supporting, Enabling, and buddies for and with racist, pedophile corrupt, billionaires screwing all of us. She’s finally shone herself to be the far right MAGA she is. I really think her attack ads will fall flat. I certainly hope so! Many of us have known who she is, but the media sbd money has presented her as “moderate.” No way she can hide from her actions now. Gingers crossed!
Outsider candidates are exactly who we need! I don't believe the people of Maine are going to be swayed against Platner. What he's campaigning on is solidly resonating with people. As far as finding dirt on him, his posts as a younger man are all the GOP have on him. They would have much more to point to with Mills, as she has a long career in politics and the contents of her record could possibly make her look like the establishmen. As for "the leftist version of populist masculinity symbolism" goes, I'm afraid we don't have the luxury of candidates that meet our wish list to the letter. We need them to win and vote with Democrats.
We need the seat, as Simon emphasized last night in his subscriber talk. It's Plattner or Collins, now. So who do you like?
He also said that he was going to Maine today to talk about coming together after the bitter primary campaign is resolved. That should be easier for him now.
Primary season is to fight for the candidates you like. In the General Election you close ranks with the team you got. I really appreciate that Simon doesn't get much involved in the primaries. Let the people decide.
I am in no way opposing Platner, we do need him to win now. I was just expressing caution about what we are possibly facing ahead. He IS problematic, especially his past use of white nationalist symbols that he only addressed after it was brought up. After the past 10 years, one would think we've had enough of white nationalism and "the working class is default white manual laborers" politics already. I would just like to move away from the leftist version of populist masculinity symbolism for a change.
I get that you are disappointed. Collins has alot of baggage of her own. Most electeds are a mixed bag. It's pretty unlikely he would kick off his campaign by saying, "I'm Graham Plattner, I used to use white nationalists symbols, but I know better now, and I'm running as the Democratic nominee for the Senate."
My view, he's better than Collins, and most likely better than Fetterman. It's not like the GOP is going to attack him for being a white nationalist in the general, that's THEIR brand. Close ranks and hope for the best. Go with the team you have. He may surprise. Fingers crossed.
Just saw Plattners speech this morning: I can't say that I disagree with anything I heard here. He was gracious. He seems ready to fight for his constituents over special interests.
He’s risen in popularity as we have had ample optimizes to meet him and see who he is today. He’s a badass sweetheart, so smart and authentic. The more we see the more we love him.
Posting this everywhere. We love him. Seek Jon Stewart’s interview shorts. You’ll see why he is where he is.
Model Simon and the positivist of Hopium. Begging Ds nationwide not to repeat R talking points to help Collins get elected. I’m really hopeful, this coming from someone who really worked hard for Governor Mills in both her runs for her seat.
I’m sharing this everywhere. I hope others will as well.
Simon your daily graphs are very helpful! I share this news in daily calls with repub senators.
Just finished donations to all Hopium supported candidates-parties, besides other state and local races in TN. Lots of really good Dem choices here this cycle!
Grateful for Janet Mills to drop out for ME senate seat. It was good of her to put people/party over self. True 💙
Hello from Maine. I was so relieved that Mills dropped out! Really grateful to get. Our state D convention starts tomorrow. We can start working on building unity now. The toxic infighting has been corrosive. Platner is a great candidate and I’m hoping our state can get together and oust Collins. Good luck in TN!
Once the primary is done, Collins will start to dump all the dirt she has on Platner, right when the people planning to vote are starting to pay attention
You'd better hope gas is over $7 a gallon by then because that's going to be the only thing that could save him
Drastic times call for drastic measures. Keep writing, calling and showing up, everyone. This has been a hard week already. Thanks Simon, for last night's stellar pep talk. It really helped me. The Debbie Downers are on a roll today about the voting rights bill. Your kick ass optimism about doing hard things was amazing. Also Robert Hubbell had a good sobering assessment of the Roberts court, this morning. But also, his eye is on the way forward and a solution, much like Simon. As Lisa says "keep going".
Good luck with your speech in Maine. Hopefully it can bring all Mainers together to support the nominee. Luke Popok has a great podcast on meidas touch right now about Comey indictment and the SCOTUS decision. It was enligtening and I recommend you listen to it. It is over an hour but worthwhile. It is on Legal AF.
I hear what the PACs are saying to Republicans in Congress. It doesn’t matter because that reasoning doesn’t line up with Donald and his destructive policies. He wants more destruction and the PACs are arguing for affordability and better wages. The 2 sides will never come together.
It’s why Democrats will win the Senate along with the House. It’s just a matter of how many seats we win.
Trump and the Republican congress are incapable of turning the ship, even if they wanted to. No doubt, they will use talking points to try to b.s. their way through, like they do every screw-up. The question is will any rats jump the ship, and when? But it will be too late... they are incapable of governing.
"one-on-one conversations with voters show that for the first time, Democrats are more trusted on the economy and inflation.”
Their warning comes with a clear plea for the GOP: Figure out how to message on cost living, and fast."
What can be done to broadcast your excellent analysis and snapshot of our current economic condition? That one graph that shows job creation under the blue team administrations versus red team administrations... if that was common knowledge, we might never have another Republican president.
They don't know how to govern, and trickle down is such b.s. they don't even say it anymore. Just naked greed now. And consumers are JUST STARTING to think that Dems are better on the economy?!!
It's probably because Dems have to clean up GOP messes which takes time, and then Republicans get to ride on those accomplishments until their policies kick in to ruin the prosperity... which takes time also.
We are unlikely to break through on corporate media with this information. People keep talking about messaging problems. If kitchen table is what most Americans care about, find a way to get that graph broadly out to the public, on social media and elected Dem talking points in interviews, and then be prepared to do battle with GOP on fake news.
I watched a bit of Ossoff's ad on TV this morning. Admittedly, it wasn't the entire thing, but I have it in my mind to seek out the complete ad later.
All I can say is: WOW. A message. Clear message. On message: corruption in DC, favoring a rarified few and enabling them to retain and increase their wealth and power, is costing Americans their quality of life.
Clear visuals connecting Trump and his scummy retinue; on the other side, Americans struggling, doing the best they can morning to night, and not being able to make a dent in their fortunes or futures.
It could be one of the best ads I've seen in a long time.
Yeah, in its simplicity and precision, it's pretty impactful.
I know it may sound petty, but I also believe that the gravitas and dignity Ossoff exudes are factors. Not to mention, well, okay, the truth is: he's easy on the eyes, as we say.
“It's probably because Dems have to clean up GOP messes which takes time, and then Republicans get to ride on those accomplishments until their policies kick in to ruin the prosperity... which takes time also.”
You nailed it. I’ve been thinking a lot about how the next Democratic president must message about this in a way that’s effective with the voters Republicans don’t care that they leave a big mess behind for Democrats and all Americans. I’m thinking weekly fireside chats.
As Simon stressed last night, Democrats need to compete and win in every possible district, red or blue. Only if we get large majorities in Congress will we able to pass Voting Rights legislation.
None of this is surprising to anyone who is paying attention, but laying out the historical picture regarding job growth is an excellent counter republican messaging. Do they really think they can spin their way out of the disaster we are facing? Rising income inequality plus higher prices tell us all we need to know about who Republicans care about.
I am so glad the GOP strategists are starting to say, out loud, that the Senate is in play. I know their plan was to claim voter fraud based on early returns or T****’s awesome popularity or whatever lies. But it seems like Rs being worried is something we can use to counter that narrative.

Hopefully and soon.

Platner's life as an oyster farmer and both Marine Corps and Army veteran will be attractive to voters. He also has strong union support. Here is today's report in the Maine Monitor about the election https://themainemonitor.org/platner-effectively-declaring-victory-primary/ and a recent article about Platner in that local publication. https://themainemonitor.org/graham-platner-success-explained/
