Michigan, Michigan, Michigan! NC is crucial yes but we MUST win MI! We won’t get back all the uncommitted votes unfortunately regardless any progress made in the Middle East from here on out. That said, MI is still ours to lose. Hopefully, you’re all focusing heavily on MI too in tandem with Whitmer. Excellent work all around! Feeling optimistic though cautiously optimistic as Trump remains a persistent wildcard. Harris is fortunately tapping into the female voting block at an unassuming rate against the GOP. Let’s keep at it.
Friends, we need to stop making the uncommitted vote in a single state more than it is. The Democratic Party has never been more unified in my 30 years than it is right now, our grassroots is stronger than it's ever been and we just have to keep doing the work and stop looking for bogeyman and scary things. Uncommitted got 11% in MI in 2012, 13% this time. Yes we have work to do, and here we "do more, worry less" as a practice, something we work on, for our family worries far too much.
Thank you, I appreciate looking ahead this way. It’s far too easy to keep our heads buried in the sand. I do not underestimate the women of this country and though we have much work to do, I would not be surprised (seemingly against all odds) if Biden/Harris manage to pull off a winning margin in November that surpasses that of 2020 and ‘upsets’ all predictions of this being a very close/tight race. Power to the ladies haha!
In 2016, 53% of white women voted for Donald "Grab ’Em By the Pussy" Trump. Incomprehensible!
This time I hope and pray it will be very different. The elevated turnout of women voters in the 2022 Midterms and other elections gives reason for confidence.
I love that Dems are going on offense! We have a real shot in NC and investing in FL is important long term regardless of what happens there this year. As Simon says we can’t afford to give up on such a large diverse state even if the past few election cycles have been challenging for us there. Hopefully what happened recently in Jacksonville and with Tom Keen is a harbinger of more wins in the future.
🤞crossed on ruling for abortion rights amendment from Fl Supreme Court today!
Rick Scott’s opponent ,Debbie Mucarsel-Powell ,fled South America with family at young age to escape violence and have a better life. She’s able to connect with voters in South Florida.
Multimillionaire Rick Scott, one of the largest defrauders in Medicare history, wants to cut your Medicare!📣
Multimillionaire Rick Scott supports fetal personhood and denying access to your birth control!📣
"Multimillionaire Rick Scott, one of the largest defrauders in Medicare history, wants to cut your Medicare!"
Precisely, Kathy! This ought to be the basis for some really hard-hitting ads. Rumor has it there are some voters in Florida who don’t want to lose their Medicare or Social Security.
Nice, good inspiration for my Florida Vote by Mail card writing with PostcardstoVoters.org. Also, hope FT6 can get funds to target Florida as well for registering Dems
Simon, I did have one more question to ask. How do you feel about the congressional races going forward? Though I know we can’t take anything for granted, I do feel optimistic about flipping the house. However, the senate will be much more difficult in my opinion to hold onto or expand upon. The AZ is crucial and I respect many resources going towards that race. Both Democrats and Republicans have agreed though losing West VA to the GOP is inevitable which means the GOP only needs to flip one more seat to take back control. The odds on paper seem in their favor given that margin. In hopes both Tammy Baldwin can prevail in PA and that AZ can go to Reuben, it seems both OH and MT are the ones to really watch. Sherrod Brown is an excellent retail politician which helps in a state like OH. Though Moreno should be easy to beat given his extremism backed by Trump, we can’t afford to take that race for granted either. Jon Tester has a difficult road ahead as well given his opponent is more appealing to independents than the other choice for the GOP nominee who lost out to Cheely I believe his name is. Do you feel optimistic about retaining both OH and MT and holding onto the senate? Also, what is your outlook on TX? I’m not so sure Ted Cruz simply has this in the bag as Colin Alred seems to be his most formidable opponent yet even more than O’Rourke was. Thanks for your time in advance.
No offense Blake, this isn't directed to you personally. but... I am increasingly flabbergasted that people who are paying money to subscribe to the blog of a highly credentialed data wonk slash unabashed Democratic cheerleader keep using the comments of that blog to dump anxieties about Democratic performance based on feelings rather than data. There is literally the entire rest of the Internet available for y'all to do that.
Re: the Senate, I did some research with our good pal Wikipedia. Sherrod Brown and Jon Tester are each running for a 4th term. Their opponents have never held statewide office (or any office). There have been 400 individual Senate elections from 2000 onward. In that entire time, there have been only 8 three-term incumbents who lost, and only 4 who lost to someone who was not a statewide office-holder.** Those are really, really good odds. And it shouldn't be intuitively surprising! If the voters liked you personally enough to support you for 20 years, why stop now, especially for someone they have never heard of?
In regards to Gallego in AZ, there is exactly 1 instance in that over-20-year span in which an open Senate seat was claimed in a Presidential year by the candidate of the opposite party of the winning Presidential candidate, if that nominee was not already a statewide office-holder. One. (It was the very Catholic Dem Joe Donnelly winning in 2012 after the incumbent Repub was ousted in a messy primary by a guy who then went on to made hirrible comments abput rape).
So if Biden wins AZ again then Reuben wins and vice versa. Considering the blue ticket just won the other Senate seat, Governor, Attorney General AND State Secretary races in AZ in the challenging '22 environment, Biden/Gallego coming out on top would historically be the better bet come November, regardless of how close a margin. (Unfortunately, that also means you shouldn't hold your breath for Colin Allred.)
I upgraded myself l to paid just to type this all out. People better appreciate this lol.
**P.S. For those interested, those 4 were: Bill Cassidy beating Mary Landrieu (LA '14), Ron Johnson beating Russ Feingold (WI '10), Maria Cantwell beating Slade Gordon (WA '00 by 0.1%), and Mark Begich beating Ted Stevens (AK '08) a week after the latter was convicted of fraud and with a high 3rd-party vote total present.
To further add to your excellent analysis, both 2010 and 2014 had low Democratic turnout, causing us to lose the House in 2010 and the Senate in 2016. That surely played a role in the Feingold and Landrieu losses. When Democrats vote, they win.
I appreciate your feedback. I’m a cautious optimist at heart and also a big picture person so yes, I believe in my gut we will win from the top down. The political landscape however, has shifted greatly in many ways so there’s bound to be a tad of anxiety here and there despite my own confidence and instincts.
Will I wanted to ask…how do you feel about the FL State Supreme Court putting the 15 week abortion ban on the ballot in November? Granted, they upheld it which of course I disagree with but letting it be on the ballot could be a real game changer. The chances of FL flipping blue this election are likely slim to none but this abortion ballot access could shift a few gears our way.
Hi Simon and welcome back from vacation… I hope you actually got some sleep! You’re quite often up late on the Lawrence O’Donnell show and I’m sure Lawrence naps during the day before going on air. I doubt that you ever get a cat nap in!
I watched A.B. Stoddard with Tim Miller on podcast a few days ago. The topic was the influential Republicans that have spoken out against trump.
They were very concerned that neither President Biden nor his campaign have called Pence or Romney or General Kelly or Chris Christie or any of the not for trumpers other than Nikki Hailey.
They feel that he is missing a huge opportunity by not thanking them for speaking out and encouraging them to speak out constantly until the election. It sure seems like a good strategy.
I know this question is for Simon but I have a feeling Biden & his team might be about ready to do this. Pure speculation on my part. No doubt Simon will have a much more informed take than myself. I can however not believe team Biden would let any opportunity slip !
Liz Cheney nor Adam Kinzinger are waiting for an invite to support Biden and oppose trump. Of those who still haven't, the only one that has demonstrated any kind of constituency is Haley. And I think she still hopes to lead a post trump GOP that I don't see emerging even if he dies soon.
There's enough rank and file never trumpers who are gonna vote for Biden that we shouldn't get nervous about some public figures who lack sizeable support. If they get on board great, but I am more concerned with leftist/progressive defection
I think the campaign needs to go after every vote they can. Any Rebublican who gets encouraged to vote blue by listening to an influential Republican is one more vote for Biden. If leftists/progressives defect and believe RFK or trump will do more for their causes they aren’t doing their due diligence.
I think the so-called leftist/progressive defection is 90% noise, 10% substance.
Dean Phillips and Marianne Williamson never got any traction. Jill Stein and Cornel West are sad curiosities. But, yeah, sure, I do wish they would drop out.
As for RFK Jr, he chose a running mate who is actually opposed to IVF! I guess loons stick together. Their balloon will either deflate or end up sucking more Republican air and voters.
If you're interested, Reed Galen co-founder of Lincoln Project called out Christie and others on twitter recently telling those waiting for an invite they need to grow up and come out to fight for our country as Cheney & Kinzinger are already doing.
We never know what is going on behind the scenes in a campaign so it's best to stay away from wasting time wondering and keep working on getting the Democrats elected.
The Biden campaign is ramping up it's "NeverTrumper" operation and I am sure calls if they haven't been placed will be made soon. The campaign is still in its early days and probably isn't as far along as they want. This is all going to happen.....
"...and they revealed they have zero presence in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and North Carolina." Simon, letting your enthusiasm get you out over your skis does no one a favor. I could find no actual support for this statement as to North Carolina, but I did find a statement that it is not clear as to Pennsylvania, and a unnamed but probably good source that it is true as to Michigan. One out of three ain't great.
On the other hand, this Wikipedia article should be made into a Democratic party pamphlet!
Seriously, what in the world is this comment "Simon, letting your enthusiasm get you out over your skis does no one a favor?" Lee, please withdraw or amend. Thank you. This kind of sentiment has no place here.
The links in the post all quote reputable news outlets stating exactly what Simon said: only Dems have field offices open in these states so far. Readong comprehension is fundamental, and patronizing the host is poor form.
QUESTION: Does anyone know if mailing a check to campaigns (which only has my name, but no address) can be successfully cashed? I did this for Anderson Clayton and Tom Suazee, but later wondered if it was a problem for them because there's no confirmation I'm American, not a business, etc... Thanks. (I don't want to give my address or phone number to any campaigns.)
Donald Trump is using the bible in his election campaign and telling his supporters he said he is being crucified like Jesus was. His loyal voters think he cares for them never mind he has started an insurraction and tried to steal an election. They don't care about that. They care that he connects with them. He uses the bible to keep his voters loyal to him. He reminds me of Reverend Jim Jones who kept people loyal to him with the bible. And he would punish people who tried to leave.
Maga is not pro life. They are pro fetus and pro embryo. When trump won in 2016, one of the first things he did was cut food stamps while cutting taxes for the rich. That doesn't sound pro life to me. They cut funding for school lunches, cut funding for the summer for kids to eat. They also cut medicaid coverage in states run by maga. They cut funding for preschool and daycare and their 2d amendment rights are killing our kids in and out of school
People on the networks who are hand wringing right now with the election should help Biden get re-elected
The abortion rights amendment is on the ballot( woo-hoo🤸) but, no surprise …. the Florida six-week extreme abortion ban will go in effect in 30 days as ruled by our uber-conservative Supreme Court .And not so fun fact… Fl Justice Canady’s wife is Fl Rep Jennifer Canady, co-sponsor of the six-week abortion ban.Of course Justice Canady refused to recuse.

Trump’s standard operating procedure of exploiting the hell out of every person and organization he has any power over is simply unsustainable - and as Simon keeps insisting, this is creating a HUGE opportunity for Dems to beat Republicans up and down the ticket.
