I wonder if this approach will be effective. See TC's and Cindy H's comments earlier today (under Littlejohn's) about their sons. They don't necessarily see "weird" as a bad thing.

Personally, I feel that the threat to democracy is real and voters need to know about this.

He tried to, but there were enough people in his administration (and outside his administration -- Brian Raffensperger, for example) who wouldn't go along. And most obviously, for more than 3 hours, Trump didn't do anything to stop the mob on January 6th, and even then, he issued a very tepid public statement telling them to go home.

This time around, he's more prepared to appoint only people who will do as he says. And the recent Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity has pretty much knocked down any guardrails that could hold him back.

Regarding exactly HOW he could end democracy, see Project 2025.

That's my short, "lay person's" take on things. Some HC members are probably better equipped to provide a more detailed answer!

Not yet. She’s currently on tour in Europe, her last leg of US shows starts in early October…in Florida.

Swifties are expecting there will be a big announcement during those shows. She’s definitely endorsing, she’s endorsed since 2018. But the biggest splash will be at a US show in October.

This is not a knowable thing right now. Every election is unique, and this one is wild and changing. Prior to Biden dropping out 538 was finding it was a 1-2 pt lead to win for us, not 4.5 like 2020. But we will see.

I agree with Simon and Matthew Dowd (watch the clip from last night) that the polling right now has not caught up with events on the ground. Polling that would be released today, for example, has surveys from Wednesday. So much is changing by the day that it just can't keep up. We have to keep doing the work! Make your calls, send your postcards, talk to your neighbors. My next batch of postcards is being delivered next week and I will be ordering more! I have written 200 already and my goal is to get to 1000 by the end of September. If I can do it, we all can do it!

Incredibly, early polls show additional states are becoming competitive. There were already huge grassroots operations in play – now we see that these are even more energized. That’s in addition to over 200 field offices and more than 2000 paid staff that overnight started working to elect Kamala Harris.

Tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of new volunteers are signing up to fight for democracy in this election. The enthusiasm reported from young voters, from minority voter, and from women is off the charts!

I have said this before but now my conviction is even stronger: I think we’ll see a Pink Tsunami and a Blue Wave election in November.

I too am eagerly waiting for my postcards. We can do this!

Expand full comment

Exactly! WI, MI, PA, NV, AZ, GA, NC are all in play and provide multiple paths. And I wonder if there is a state out there that may surprise all of us? Maybe I'm just dreaming, but GA was R+5 in 2016 and then went D in 2020. And we haven't had the impact yet of the Obama endorsement, the VP pick, or the convention.

Florida. My bet of a dark horse state nobody was expecting is Florida. People down there are angry at the state of their state. If it’s a Pink Tsunami election, I think we could flip Florida.

I agree, especially with the abortion question on the ballot there this year. My concern is that they have purged so many voters, but we will just have to see. This is my dark horse too.

Are you doing Postcards to Swing States/Swing Districts?

If they were backlogged with order from existing grassroots activists after the debate last month, I can't imagine what the backlog looks like after this week!! (or will look like once they resume talkinhg

I'm in NC and our county Democratic party and local Indivisible chapter ordered 100K (IIRC) NC postcards to be written and mailed out this October. (I haven't heard an update of how many bundles still need to be distributed).

We are also finishing up a campaign for the Democrat running against Tricia Cotham , the NC house rep who flipped parties and gave the GOP a veto-proof super-majority in the NC Legislature. I'm also currently working on postcards for Mo Green, who is running statewide for Superintendent of Public instruction against a MAGA conspiracy nut who refers to public schools as "indoctrination centers".

Then next in the queue are postcards for Josh Stein for Governor against that horror Mark Robinson.

Joined the #AnswerTheCall2024 Zoom last night along with 160,000 others. Big message - white women are the largest voting block and 53% voted for Trump in 2020. Even a small shift in this segment can have a big impact on the election. So, it’s time to talk to your sisters, daughters, friends, neighbors, and relatives. Don’t be shy. Many of us were too quiet (myself included) in our support for Hillary. We have an incredible candidate in VP Harris who is promising a bright future for all humans, women and the planet and let’s give this everything we have.

That call was so inspiring! And we have our assignment- we need to start talking to the white women in our lives, have the uncomfortable conversations, and be loud and proud about our support. I wanted a “Madam President” ball cap but they were sold out!

I also ordered a Taylor Swift-themed “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” Kamala shirt from Etsy. Gotta represent the Swifties for Harris!! 💙

I live in Oregon, in a comfortably bluish-purple city, and I’m a middle-aged white woman so I’m safe to walk around decked out in my political opinions (I have a particular affinity for abortion rights t-shirts, and a couple really good “I’m with the banned” book ban ones). Not everyone lives somewhere where that is the case, so for those of us who can, we need to get loud to create an “everyone is voting for her” permission structure for reluctant/disengaged voters.

I also recommend you check out Galvanize Action (www.galvanizeaction.org). They focus on moderate white women and persuade them to vote in line with their values, which usually aligns pretty well with Democrats. Aaron Frank of Focus on Democracy has been recommending them and fundraising for them heavily so that they can expand their messaging to more swing states. I think he has another Zoom set up for Sunday evening. I'll see if I can find the link and edit this post.

But you can also learn about Galvanize action from a BigTent "Tent Talk" from a few months ago, the video is archived here: https://www.bigtentusa.org/event/galvanize/

It is worth a listen -- and a donation!!

P.S. In light of the Dobbs Decision, Trump bragging about ending Roe. v. Wade and his inexplicable choice of that toxic misogynist J.D. Vance as a running mate, I refuse to believe that Trump will garner anywhere near 53% of white women's vote. There just aren't that many Evangelical and conservative Catholic women.

This is our first “I’d much rather be us than them” that Simon has written in some time (months, I think?)

The enthusiasm, hope, and joy of this moment cannot be overstated. I see a lot of people comparing it to 2008, but I think it’s even more than that. (Or maybe I’m biased as a woman who truly never thought I’d see a woman president in my lifetime)

LFG, we’ve got 57 days until early voting starts, we can make every one of those days count!

Yes, after the debate I was not sure I would have rather been us than them, but I have returned to it for it is what I believe now based on the very encouraging polling we've received this week and all the other things that have happened. Hopium is flowing again!

Here is the statement from Harris that I saw, which is indeed pitch perfect!

“I condemn any individuals associating with the brutal terrorist organization Hamas, which has vowed to annihilate the State of Israel and kill Jews. Pro-Hamas graffiti and rhetoric is abhorrent and we must not tolerate it in our nation. I condemn the burning of the American flag. That flag is a symbol of our highest ideals as a nation and represents the promise of America. It should never be desecrated in that way. I support the right to peacefully protest, but let’s be clear: Antisemitism, hate and violence of any kind have no place in our nation.”

Well, my comment disappeared when Simon corrected the post, but with NC in play, someone needs to make sure the 35k+ South Asian Americans in Cary are registered and that their doors are being knocked on. The South Asian vote is going to be huge with Kamala at the top of the ticket. I know NC and I know the South Asian community there. They could swing the state our way. Also, when looking at these polls, remember that the 38k+ young people who just registered on Vote.org are not being polled. Everything is different now from what it was last week, to a greater degree than the press is even picking up on. People were miserable about the same election being held twice in a row. But our party just left the much-loathed year of 2020 behind and the other just settled there permanently. For God's sake, they have run the same presidential candidate THREE TIMES IN A ROW. People are excited about Kamala and, more than that, about the chance to move forward after feeling stuck in an endless loop for so long. Just think, you could look at a picture of a Trump rally from 2016, 2018, 2020, 2023, or 2024 and they all look identical. Red hats, scowling white faces, a token person of color paid to sit where the camera will see them. It's an exhausted movement. Kamala's rallies will be massive. And diverse. And vital. We have not even seen the beginning of her campaign yet and she has already left Trump and Vance in the dust.
