For those especially worried about how we get people to understand all the great work we've done, I suggest that we're at the stage in this process where people are going to start noticing it in their own lives more and more over the next 18 months. We need to keep shouting the data from the rooftops, but we're also going to start getting a big assist from the compounding effect of good policy over a sustained period of time. Give yourself the treat of watching the following clip from President Clinton's 2012 DNC Convention Speech for exactly 3 minutes (I have it cued to start in the right place).....history so often repeats itself. Tell me that you couldn't easily replace the name Obama with Biden, and Bush with Trump, and the story is nearly identical. MAGA will keep being appalling and horrible my friends....but we're entering a wonderful new phase of our economic recovery.....the part where people #FeelIt!
I hope you don't mind -- but as one of your biggest boosters and a fan of the goals you've set for Dems in 2023 and beyond (getting louder about how Dems deliver, getting to 55 by expanding young voters & other key demos, and calling out the extremism of MAGA), I read your messaging recommendation above and have three specific suggestions based on the great work of ASO Communications.
1) Lead with our shared VALUES, to bring the reader in based on emotion/morals, vs data -- also, make voters the protagonist in this story, rather than personifying the economy (as the GOP owns the economy frame, we need to break away from it and own our own about jobs, wages, progress and especially, the freedom to thrive and succeed).
2) Call out the VILLAINS and motivations of the MAGA GOP, so it's not just us cheering for ourselves but drawing a critical contrast on why we are better.
3) Finally, end with the VISION of how we can all live better lives by electing Dems, because, we've successfully done so before!
To illustrate, here's your original copy with these changes:
Through our grit, resilience, and hard work, the American people have gotten through a rough patch in our history. Because no matter our race, background, or party, we all want an economy that puts working families first, by lowering unemployment, lowering inflation, lowering uninsured and poverty rates, and increasing average wages.
President Biden and the Democrats' ambitious agenda to build things here at home has begun to have a very positive impact, making America's recovery from COVID the best of any advanced nation; but let’s be very clear, even though far more is going right today in America than wrong, at every turn, MAGA Republicans want to take away our freedoms to succeed and thrive. They have voted against American-made manufacturing and high-tech jobs, against investments in roads, bridges and high-speed Internet, and even against lower prescription drugs and healthcare costs, going so far as to hold our government hostage if they don't get to defund social security, Medicare, Veterans benefits, and even school lunches, just so they can continue to ensure that a wealthy, well-connected few—billionaires and price-gouging corporations—don't have to pay the taxes they owe.
By electing Biden, we now have record low unemployment, record low uninsured, and record low poverty rates. We now see real wages and incomes in positive territory, as we watch inflation continue to drop. Recognizing we still have a lot more to do, we should still take good news when it comes. Moreover, for those who spend so much time talking down this great country, it's time you join us in acknowledging the progress we’ve made—for this progress isn’t just the progress of Biden or the Democrats, it is American progress to be celebrated by all.
At some point I am going to write or video my thoughts about the differences between narrative, argument, message and where data/policy and elected officials fit into this process. I spend more of my time in the narrative and argument space than message. But all that is for another day....keep working hard everyone!
Thanks for reading and responding and for providing the raw materials to build a winning message to Democratic voters: our activists, our base voters, and most importantly — 80 million high potential voters (young & Latino unregistered voters, swing voters, and voters who typically don't follow politics).
These three voting groups get us way, way over 55pts!
The data is quite positive, how do we get people to pay attention. Lack of media coverage of this important economic success is a travesty.
What is your thoughts on Leonhardt’s The Morning column.

All good Natalie. Helpful and smart.
