Yesterday, Catherine Goivannoni posted a great comment about President TACO, which, as she points out, “really pisses Trump off”.
I would like to expand on this. This is such a perfect line of attack that Congressional Democrats should seize the opportunity: Make every Tuesday a TACO Tuesday! Hold a weekly press conference detailing how Trump and his lackeys have “chickened out” in recent days!
Here is the Political Wire’s summary of Jonathan Last’s thoughts on TACO Trump.
PRESIDENT “TACO” TRUMP
Jonathan Last [of The Bulwark] believes “TACO” has the potential to hurt Donald Trump:
– It’s simple. Trump Always Chickens Out. You can put that phrase anywhere, apply it to anything, and everyone knows what it means.
– It’s meme-able. You have the slogan. You have the word mark. And you have an universally recognizable image. Hell, there’s even a pre-built emoji for it. 🌮
– It’s universal. You can apply it to any situation. Trump pulls back on tariffs? TACO. Trump gives in to Putin? TACO. Trump increases the national debt? TACO.
– It’s organic. No Democratic strategist came up with TACO. It’s an observation that emerged from the finance world—from the very same bros who voted for Trump in the first place. You can feel the disdain of his own supporters dripping off of it.
– It hits at something deep inside Trump. It’s about his soul. It’s about his weakness.
“By hitting him with TACO over and over, you (a) reveal his pull-backs as weakness and (b) dare him to go through with the stuff that will screw up the real world—and, in theory, (c) create pain for his movement.”
TACO News (example 1): In December, 2023, Trump opposed the $15 billion sale of U.S. Steel to Nippon Steel and pledged "to block it instantaneously." Today, he flies to Pittsburgh to give his blessing to the deal.

TACO News (example 2): Sky-high trolling at Mar-a-Lago! Enjoy the video.
Love your idea; however I would check around with your Hispanic friends. My family is Hispanic and tacos rule supreme for many as their food of choice in a thousand different ways. Competitions, cookouts, toppings, salsa, etc. I’m not taco centric but I wouldn’t want to learn we’ve offended a huge voting block. Kinda could be like poking fun at BBQ or hotdogs.
One way or another, just about any meme will have some nuance that someone somewhere will deem "politically incorrect". Remember the meme "Karen"? I actually felt sorry for all the fine women called Karen that I’ve know.
Another example is "drama queen" applied to, say, Lindsey Graham. Lots of cognoscenti of political correctness howled that this was "homophobic".
I am Hispanic and I think it's funny. So do my Latino family and friends. Well, except, I assume, for the MAGA member of the family. We are not saying TACOs are bad - just that Trump is a chicken **it.
I love this!! It gets at a point Simon makes about how Trump (and his voters) view the world in terms of strength and weakness. Someone who "chickens out" is weak. As Rick Wilson points out, Dems need to get better about repeating and repeating and repeating a message until it gets into the national consciousness. Think how often Rs repeated "Crooked Hillary" or "Biden Crime Family." TACO Tuesdays could win the 2026 election for us.
And someone needs to say it: "TACO" gets under trump's thin skin also because tacos are Mexican, abhorrent though that is. He's famously a McDonald's fan, not a Taco Bell one, as Americanized as it is.
I'm guessing tacos are too "foreign" for him. Meanwhile, what percentage of Americans love tacos? 95% or so?
I think it was Jimmy Kimmel who riffed on the Village People's "Macho Man"... TACO TACO MAN... I wanna be... your TACO MAN... then Jimmy seguayed into YMCA (a Trump favorite) also 4 letters long and amenable to arm gestures T. A. C. O... ... T. A. C. O. ... lol. Could be a great cheer for 6/14... nationwide.
I also think "Taco Bell ~make a run for the border" might hold some promise... its a starting point but my gut tells me there's a meme in there somewhere... we just have to unlock it.
I agree with Stones, the opportunity to kick TACO MAN while he is down could be viral. Lets pin it onhim and NEVER let up!
Yes, authoritarians try to appear strong and invincible. Chickening out constantly is the opposite of that. And being mocked for chickening out is even better.
From some comments in a DailyKos post: ""Let’s get creative. What’s a good “Trump taco”? Just an empty shell? Just a shell filled with orange cheese? A shell with nothing but his beef with Joe Biden? What do *you* put in your Trump Taco?"
"I think every taco truck in a hundred miles of Washington on June 14 should go to the parade area and sell TACOs, especially chicken TACOs."
"Trump TACO: all bluster, no meat."
"Don't tread on my TACO" (with snake and taco images)
This a great summation of who is involved and actions to take. But not what the end game is.
What I have read that resonates for me, is that these aligned fascist groups (I'm sure most of them do not see themselves as fascist), want to destroy the middle class. The middle class and upper working class are the folks who are still capable of analytical thinking. We are also people who believe we have some power in the economy.
What they are looking to do at their most evil, is to create a "new" (old) economy where AI manages companies that human managers used to manage, where dissent has been silenced, and where what is left for employment are menial jobs where all Americans are cogs in the machine without any power.
If we die of disease and/or poor living conditions or dangerous work conditions? Well, there isn't any birth control, which these folks seem to truly believe means an unlimited supply of serfs to keep churning out profit for the 1 percent.
I've said from the beginning, Musk was after the data. His comms team is trying to clean up his image. Don't believe them . It's all a lie.
He & his DOGE boys broke tons of laws. Time to arrest them & hold them accountable. Musk is a crook & a fraud. Keep up the Tesla takedown. Scrutinize all the tax $s he gets for the failing SpaceX.
Spot on, Janet! I am surprised and disappointed that we haven’t seen conclusive, investigative journalism that highlights what is being done with this data. A few days ago, I posted my suspicion that Musk has teamed up with Peter Thiel. I’m not alone in suspecting that they’re constructing a giant, searchable "master" database of all Americans. And the data is being run through his Palantir to e.g. guide the Trump Regime’s purges and hirings.
(By the way, Thiel is an adherent of the extreme right-wing ideas of Curtis Yarvin, a neo-monarchist and neo-feudalist. In my opinion, one of the most dangerous men in America.)
I totally agree, Janet. Musk has done the damage and will be much less visible going forward. I think we’re in for a real surprise regarding all the data he has stolen. I sincerely hope that there are folks digging into this as I have a very bad feeling about it. Also, I don’t believe for a moment that he is truly leaving. All Taco needs is Musk’s money.
Agree. With Katie Miller now working for him full time, guessing there will be a back channel to Steven Miller and the rest of the traitors. I don't believe for one minute that she's only with him to build back his reputation for Tesla and SpaceX. As long as Musk is still useful (money) then they will keep finding ways to keep him around.
His drug issue may just do him in eventually. He was high as a kite in the Oval today.
I've been thinking about Simon's comment to the effect that there are no actual "low-information voters," since nowadays we're all taking in information of some kind. Thinking about anti-vaxxers in particular, it seems to me they value a kind of unofficial knowledge, often conspiracy-oriented. I've actually worried about this finding that now CDC is putting out stuff with made-up article citations, because I know these citations will show up in anti-vax posts--signs of their "research." So it seems to me this government attempt at a demolition of official scientific, research, and public health knowledge is sort of tied into this. The Trump administration "takes on" the bad scientists who wield official knowledge--this kind of academic and research elite--clearing the way for all the gunk put out by RFK and others.
I agree 100% with you about moving away from passive voice (laws were broken) to active voice (Trump, Musk, RFK are breaking laws).
Dems need to make clear that it may take years, but there will be consequences for those who break laws. Trump can't pardon people who break state laws and most of these folks are breaking state and federal laws. (Ultimately, we're going to need some limits on the pardon power, especially when the pardon is for a crime committed for or in conjunction with the president.) One example: it's against the law to bribe federal officials. Folks who get pardons after buying Trump meme coins or donating to his PAC are bribing a federal official, probably committing wire fraud, and have to be prosecuted.
I firmly believe a lot of our current problems go back to when Ford pardoned Nixon. At the time, it seemed like Nixon had been so disgraced that no one would ever again engage in such behavior and it allowed America to move on. But the lesson the Rs took from that was that they could break the law and get away with it. Bush v Gore enforced that lesson. Then, the cowardice of Comey and Garland made things even worse. Punishment has several goals and one of them is deterrence. We want other people who are thinking about robbing a bank to look at what happened to the last person who tried that and to decide that maybe they'd better not rob that bank. If it takes Dems decades, we need to convict and punish these people. Trump, Musk, and others need to die in jail.
I called my MD reps about the fact that my family can't get COVID boosters this fall and about the budget. I'm writing post cards today to register NC voters.
Hey Simon. Last night's talk was terrific. Thank you. Today's post is a firehose of sobering stuff. Thank you. I have to keep focusing on the priorities you set each day - and they are consistent. I love your thinking out loud with us and letting us know about the work YOU are doing with your colleagues, the DNC folks, the state Chairs etc etc. Every post, you deepen your thinking and it's a good challenge even though I can't keep up. I want to say that if you didn't write at all on the weekends, I believe it would be a good thing for all of us. There is so much to catch up on and think about that taking a break from action over the weekend is fine with me, especially for the summer. This is such a long haul, I really don't want you to burn out somewhere in the middle and have to leave us for a longer time than just a weekend. So happy weekend to us all.
Yeah, agree with you on this Kate. Maybe on Saturday, Lincoln or someone could just do a "here's what you may have missed this week" post -- the "greatest hits" of the M-F content. Help those who want to catch up a bit on the weekend do so. Then Sunday just an open thread on self-care or ways we are taking care of ourselves and finding joy even in this time.
Tesla Takedown notes: the protests will continue, he's still stealing money and data from us all, June 28 is Elon Musk's birthday; watch for announcements of protests.
Resolutions: Mass50501 is working on the resolutions idea. It's a good fit for them with their focus on the Constitution, rule of law, and the largest possible coalition. I'll post updates and resources here, and keep working with them on dissemination.
On another note. This headline from NY times just now is horrifying. This is just more ethnic cleansing right under our noses. I am going to write the Justices and rip them all new ... you know what's!
NYT: "Supreme Court Allows Trump Administration, for Now, to End Biden-Era Migrant Program
The Trump administration had asked the court to allow it to end deportation protections for more than 500,000 people facing dire humanitarian crises in their home countries.
Yes, I forgot to mention I had tacos for dinner last night LOL. ;)
In case you missed, I received a very nice phone call from someone at the NC State Dems thanking me for being a donor. As a DC native now living in NJ (read: very jaded), this really impresses the heck out of me. Anderson is a rock star!
NJ was not on the tariffs lawsuit, but we were part of the birthright citizenship suit that was argued before SCOTUS a couple weeks back. Keeping positive thoughts for our great AG Matt Platkin, and looking forward to when we can hear from him here! More later...
DJT as saboteur is perfect. Not quite foreign agent, but maybe even more insidious. On another subject, do we know anything about the small army of Muskovites working for DOGE (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/02/27/us/politics/doge-staff-list.html). Where are they now? Seemingly (and frighteningly) an accomplished, bright and energetic group of people the oldest of whom is 50. I hope Elon and those folks are aware of Rick Wilson's infallible maxim, 'Everything Trump Touches Dies'.
I think that's a good question. I worked with some very experienced voter registration folks at Sierra Community College a few weeks ago. They were there with a local Democratic organization (Auburn Area Dems), but they seemed to have the position that their actual voter registration was non-partisan. The official forms they use have all options for registration, and they don't tell people which box to check. They do use the opportunity to explain why they are Democrats, and advocate for registering as a Democrat, but that's as far as they go. They turn in all filled out voter registration forms, regardless of party (or lack of party). I don't know if that's a California thing, or just their take on things, but I would also be curious to know more about how Simon sees partisan voter registration being implemented.
I called all three and left the usual budget and tariffs sabotage message with the senators who never have staff answering.
Rep Bresnahan’s staffer took my ask that he work to stop the illegal tariffs and reconsider his vote for a budget that extends tax cuts to the wealthy triggering a massive deficit and further cuts in public tools like Medicare.

Thanks Thomas. Scary stuff. Unfortunately also believable.
Can we ever recoup the money he’s stolen
you're asking us?
Congress can reappropriate the money that was impounded when we take back the House.
The courts can impound or seize dt's assets in both civil and criminal state cases.
I hope we can and do!

Simon, can you explain how partisan voter registration works? Could it work in a state like Virginia, where voters do not register by party?
I think that's a good question. I worked with some very experienced voter registration folks at Sierra Community College a few weeks ago. They were there with a local Democratic organization (Auburn Area Dems), but they seemed to have the position that their actual voter registration was non-partisan. The official forms they use have all options for registration, and they don't tell people which box to check. I don't know if that's a California thing, or just their take on things, but I would also be curious to know more about how Simon sees partisan voter registration being implemented.
I wondered this too since League of Women Voters does non-partisan registration. But I agree Democrats should pitch the party at registration.
