In 2026, Democrats need to run the strongest possible candidates in every race, especially for the Senate and House. We have just one shot at stomping on the brakes to lessen the damage Trump and his Project 2025 are doing to America – and this is it.
Delighted to see Roy Cooper declare his candidacy! I’m hoping Governor Janet Mills will choose to challenge Susan Collins in Maine.
NB. Trump’s approval numbers are plummeting, but the Democratic Party’s approval is nothing to brag about. That needs to change; we need to be far more than anti-Trump. Between now and November of 2026, every Democratically-controlled state and city needs to be made into a convincing exhibition window of Democratic policies and achievement!
I think the numbers about the Democratic Party writ large ignore that all politics is local. The election results speak for themselves. But yes, messaging can always improve.
In today’s hyperpartisan environment, all politics is made national. And it’s not just about messaging. (I know you’re not saying that it is.) Imho, Democrats need to show accomplishment – hence my suggestion about "exhibition windows".
Re: Democratic Party’s unpopularity. Isn’t it also true that people tend to like their own Representatives, Senators, etc.? I recall polls in the past that showed that, anyway.
"To win the White House and governing majorities again, Democrats must reckon with how far our party has strayed from our New Deal roots, in terms of both our philosophy toward the economy, and the makeup of our coalition."
Thanks, Simon! Great news about Roy Cooper! Hopium's work strengthening the NC Democratic Party is going to pay off dividends in this effort. The Senate is going to be asked to confirm some SCOTUS justices before 2028 and we need all the Dems there we can get.
I called Congressman Raskin and Senators Alsobrooks and Van Hollen to ask them to keep the illegality of the tariffs front and center. I'm writing postcards to Virginia voters today and attending this evening's local Dem information session on voter registration.
At this point, I'm starting to suspect that the tariff announcement-and-retreat cycle is about trump and his associates making money. Crypto is the next frontier- he's out to take it all and if it collapses markets, he'll probably benefit from that too. The Guardian has an excellent piece about the role of the tariffs, and this thought-provoking quote:
"Through cryptocurrency, Trump has found the ultimate way to attach his core impulse – avarice – to the larger machinery of the markets. There is some truth to the argument that Trump wants more of everything he can get, including power, glory and prestige. But what he wants more than anything else is money, which is just a temporary token of more money, and more money for ever more.
The unique instinct behind Trump’s avarice, which sets him apart from other billionaires who continue to chase wealth, is that he has found a way to build his fortune through deals – whether deals that make him money by inflating the value of his brand, which can then make him more money through more deals, or through the enforceability of completed contracts.
Through his dealmaking, Trump has managed to triumph over the market, making it work for him to amass greater and greater sums of money, whether his deals are seen through to fruition or not."
Great article, thanks for the link! That makes so much sense! If he defines a “great deal” as “anything that makes more money for Donald Trump personally,” then of course he is making great deals.
Silly me, using some other definition of “great deal” for when a President of the United States concludes negotiations with the leaders of other countries, on behalf of the American people. What was I thinking?
Really good article for understanding what seems to motivate trump. Really interesting take that he doesn't really like markets -- they don't serve him.
How do you spell emoluments? Does manipulating the markets count?
"The Emoluments Clause, found in the U.S. Constitution, is actually two separate clauses designed to prevent corruption and undue foreign influence on federal officials. The Foreign Emoluments Clause prohibits federal officials from accepting gifts, payments, or titles from foreign governments without congressional consent. The Domestic Emoluments Clause restricts the President's compensation, ensuring they cannot be unduly influenced by Congress or individual states. "
No one should trust these "deals". Trump could turn around and demand some other concession later on.
The other thing is they keep claiming they are getting countries to agree to "invest" in the US. This is extremely murky. It also suggests Trump doesn't understand trade deficits, since a trade deficit tends to be supported by an inflow of capital. Krugman made this point on his Substack that requiring commitments for investment into the US economy will actually have the result of increasing trade deficits. Or maybe since Trump wants a say in how the money is invested, foreign countries will just be less likely to fund our budget deficits.
Self report: Mailed my latest batch of postcards, ready with 25 more to write, and made a $25 donation to Roy Cooper.
This morning, I called my Senators (both Democrats), to support their NO votes (vote is TODAY, 7/28) for Emil Bove as a lifetime Federal Judge on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. He is a total disgrace- corrupt, and a defier of court orders.
I also supported a NO vote for Jeanine Pirro, Fox News host for U.S. Attorney for D.C. She represents everything that MAGA supports. Totally unfit for ANY judgeship.
The good news is that Trump has promised to lower the cost of medicine by 1000 to 1400 percent. This means that pharmaceutical companies will soon be *paying* you to take their drugs! As I understand it, this is happening right after Trump’s "Infrastructure Week".
(I jest, of course. Math and logic, or keeping promises, have never been Trump’s strong suit – nor has much of anything else for that matter.)
I retired from teaching 3 years ago. But when I heard his inane comment, I briefly thought, "I wish I was still teaching middle school math so I could use his comment as an example of how not to conceptualize percentages!" That would nave been a daring move where I live and worked-- but would so be worth the pushback from the students and ugly phone calls from the parents!
My understanding is the medicines will now be thrown over the border wall with Mexico, and Mexico will pay for all US Health care.
I di think here is where Dems need to immediately go on the offensive. "DJT wants increase med prices. We lowered your insulin costs, etc." Hit hard and with a plan of what ypu would do instead.
Man, that would be a great video clip to see go viral: Mexico providing insulin and other essential medicines for Americans who can no longer afford them because of Trump!
Self report from WI. Calls are in to both senators to vote no on Bove (with a thank you to Dem Senator)
Calls are in to Rep members of congress regarding ICE, tariffs, science… my usual calls and reminder of their responsibility to uphold their oath and defend our constitution.
I'm posting all kinds of messages on my other grassroots communities, inspired by Simon's mandate to NEVER bad mouth the DEMS. People over there are complaining without suggestions. I'm taking a lesson from Hopium crowd here, and asking them to stop complaining and get LOUDER with their reps about GETTING LOUDER. Also calling and calling and writing and writing re tariffs, corruption, and Gaza (I can't bear it). Also friends, don't forget to call and thank your reps if you see them doing the hard work and using their voices. Elizabeth Warren is like a dog with a bone and I don't think she gets enough credit so I call and thank her often - for specific actions. PS I think our congressional reps need to know how upset we are about the blatant corruption, plunder and betrayal. They are the ones mandated with impeachment, the budget etc. They need to hear us use the word BETRAYAL AND PLUNDER.
Yes. Maybe at the meeting this week Simon could talk about this idea on social media that the Democratic Party is unpopular. There was some WSJ poll ricocheting around. I considered it and realized any party sort of needs rock star energy. Obama had that, as did Bill Clinton in is day. We have people like that. That’s why the party should encourage the Mamdani vibe instead of treating to suppress it.
Lots to discuss here bit the WSJ poll was paid for by Rupert Murdoch, conducted by Trump’s pollster and was significantly more pro Trump than other recent polls. Lots of polling out there to discuss. This one should be ignored.
FWIW, I find too many Democrats and Democratic-leaning organizations too quick to accept negative narratives about Democrats. Over the weekend I saw a clip on Instagram with George Conway and some left media site (maybe Other98?) about Alina Habba’s long term strategy in NJ - to run for Senate. The host said NJ just might be the next purple state because Phil Murphy was only reelected by 5 points. What? That framing completely ignores that NJ has a LONG history of electing Republican governors (as does, I may add, VT and MA), and, more importantly, that Murphy was the first Democratic governor to be reelected in decades. Why not focus on the positive: the fact that Murphy actually WON. 🤯
I just posted about an opportunity to write postcards with Postcards4VA for the upcoming special election in house district VA-11on Sept 9th. (Early voting started TODAY so time is of the essence).
The election is to fill the seat of the late long-term Congressman Gerry Connolly who lost his fight with cancer earlier this year.
Simon, I want to strongly encourage you to do an interview with Zohran Mamdani. We need the broadest big tent coalition we can muster, from Liz Cheney to Mamdani — not that we will by any means agree on everything, but that we must work together on the one overriding issue of saving American democracy from MAGA fascism. We need to renew the dialogue between our progressive and centrist wings, because, quite simply, when we fail to do so, we lose. Tens of millions of our voters stayed home in the 2024 election. We need to keep building and reinforcing bridges across our coalition to make sure to get everyone who cares about the fate of our county consistently voting Democratic from now on. And we need to better understand how a candidate like Mamdani succeeds in getting his voters to the polls — i.e., by listening to and responding to their concerns.
Just called my senators (Fetterman and McCormick) to oppose the nomination of Bove to the federal; bench. I wish more groups were mobilizing against Bove.
Just called Booker & Kim & sounded the alarm on tariffs, Bove & ICE. Rep. Smith (Traitor-NJ04) gets a weekly email (that never gets a response), and I will continue to call him re the disastrous Big Ugly when they are back in session. Left VMs for him re Epstein files. This is an area of weakness for him in particular given his "Catholic faith."
Thank you for the additions to subscriber offerings, including the Resolutions Project and Hopium Agenda pages. Intrigued by the "Leader Board!"
Very concerned that RFK's disaster at HHS is way under the radar. We've gotten as many vaccines as we can in this household, but I work at a university and well, we know how responsible 18-year olds can be. I am extremely concerned that there will not be an updated COVID vax available to students and university community this fall.
Donated to former Gov. Cooper & am excited to see this race take shape. I have donated to all our candidates at least once, and am a regular donor to NC Dems & Mikie Sherrill. Will consider more as finances permit. It's less than 100 days out from our statewide election and I'm looking forward to FINALLY being able to do some door knocking for our local state assembly candidates. Postcards to VA ongoing.
We are so grateful (and relieved) that Roy Cooper is doing this! Former NC Rep Wiley Nickel, who stepped into this NC Senate race early, is graciously going to endorse Cooper, step out, and run for Wake County DA. Which is great! I work with C2C + NoC, https://c2cnoc.org/,
where we try to flip seats in the North Carolina General Assembly, and it'll be great for us to have that extra enthusiasm injected into our down ballot work! Especially as we work on knocking doors and making calls in Eastern NC, where Roy Cooper hails from (Nash County), and where we are making real gains to make the races there competitive again (these once-Democratic seats went Republican). If anyone wants to know a bit more about Roy Cooper and this important race, The Assembly (a statewide zine that does excellent deep dive coverage) has this story out this morning: https://www.theassemblync.com/politics/roy-cooper-senate-2026/
I'm a fellow North Carolinian and I echo your sentiments about Cooper. He is a steady hand at the wheel and I think the NC GOP will have a tough time portraying him as a wild-eyed radical Democrat/Socialist/Communist or whetever their current inflammatory labels are for Democrats!
I don't think Wiley is very well known outside his former house district - at least he isn't well known here in Charlotte. This would have given the GOP more more to try and control the narrative - at least IMO.
that's my thinking as well. I'm sure Wiley was aware all along that if Cooper ran, he'd step aside. And while we know that Jeff Jackson has a brilliant future, for the moment, the role he's playing as NC AG to try to protect the state from the Trump regime/machine feels crucial.
That was a good article. Cooper's role in expanding Medicaid in NC recently would seem to be a great setup for 2026. Tillis' description of the upcoming NC Senate race as a "knife fight in a phone booth" is a vivid one.
It’s the zealotry...Well, yes, but THEY are not the only ones.
Our Hopium community works daily, zealously, in so many ways, to counter all their terrible actions.
Reporting that before I identified myself & my town this AM, Sen Hagerty's staff member addressed me by name when I called the office to leave my message for him. Perhaps she had caller ID or just recognized my voice because I am a repeat customer!! Guess someone is listening...but it isn't Hagerty..........yet 😉
At this point, staffers at my MoCs' offices stop me when I start to recite my contact info. I get a dry, "yeah, I think we have you in the system already..." LOL!
