Please re-read what Simon has had to say about protests and rallys, including the following:
"I went to the 50501 website and they do not list any names behind this movement. I am sorry but no fucking way can we all follow an anonymous group, under any circumstances. And they have "revolution" in their name. We are going to match their radical politics now with our own? Please - https://pol-rev.com/mission/ "
"make sure you only attend or promote events by organizations you know and trust. In general please do not support any action - boycott, protest, rally - etc unless you know and trust the organizers. This is really important my friends."
“Be Careful About Attending In-Person Protests and Rallies - Friends, as we move forward I want to urge caution about attending in person protests and rallies. Trump and his junta want violence and conflict so they can usher in a new era of repression. There are chaos monkeys on both sides who will want to hijack these events and push them to violence. Hostile foreign governments will also want to push these protests to violence. So, a couple of thoughts about how we enter this next stage of in-person protests:
Do not attend a rally or protest unless you know and trust the organization behind them, or the speakers who are speaking.
More broadly, our protest movements have to become strategic, smart, not impulsive and wild - and they must be led by trusted leaders. Do everything you can to not empower fringe organizations or inexperienced leaders. It is not really clear we are living in a democracy any more and we have to approach in person street protests carefully, strategically, or a lot can be lost, quickly.
If you go to a protest, anticipate that you will be arrested. Let others know what you are doing and ask them to check in with you to make sure you are OK, and check in with them to let them know you are OK. Federal and local law enforcement have the power to track your phone at each location, and will know whether you attended. For some that will not matter. For others it will. The way we found many of the J6 insurrectionists was through geo-locating their phones at the Capitol that day.”locating their phones at the Capitol that day.”
I missed the comment. I green it was promoting events. I do get quite a few emails and texts from friends about protests. I am getting many about an economic blackout. I won't post the date. So, this not a good idea? Not that I thought it was a great idea anyway, but so many of my friends are saying we should do this. I am not well informed about it. No idea who is sponsoring it, etc.
Laine, I am taking this post down. Indivisible is great, but these other organizations are either not serious nor ones we can yet trust. Please do not promote activities on here where the sponsors are not known or trusted.
I guess I’ll share a possible answer to your question. I believe the point of an economic blackout is to think about how we each use our buying power, and to put that to more positive uses in order to affect change. The things I’ve seen recently about such “blackouts” include encouraging people, if they have to buy things, to support local, independent businesses rather than large companies. It’s like a boycott, which can be effective at leading to change when it reaches scale. The UFW grape boycott in the 1960s is an example. What if we all ended our Amazon Prime subscriptions and signed up for PBS Passport instead? It could influence Bezo’s calculations in other areas; and it would help ensure an independent news outlet could survive without being beholden to this WH administration. I’m just using that as an example to illustrate the point. Also, all successful social movements were small when they started. Giving Tuesday is a great example of that.
Yes Simon, quite often they don't achieve much politically, though I'll say it helps me feel better to know that less of my money is going to companies actively supporting deplorables. But I must say that the current malady befalling Musk's businesses, in which the Economic Times reported last week that he had lost over $120 billion in stock worth, is very uplifting and gives me more hope than I've had in a while - and it was accomplished by a campaign encouraging people to boycott Tesla. Acknowledging that I am replying to a comment you typed up about a month ago, does this particular boycott against Musk give you pause, or changed your mind at all, about the potential power of boycotts, especially if they go global?
Have you tried calling his local office(s)? I have found that I can usually speak to a person if I do that. The DC office gets the most voicemails and my senators have stopped answering their phones. I suspect their poor staffers do nothing but listen to voicemails all day long.
My paranoid self wonders if these legislators are afraid of having their family members doxxed. Given what's happening with the children of judges and FBI agents, I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that they are nervous about this, whether or not there is an actual threat.
Exactly. I've called Ted Cruz's local office and been able to leave messages with his staff. Calling our senators' local offices is the smart thing to do.
I just donated $25 to Susan Crawford Candidate for Supreme Court Justice, Wisconsin in April 2025
Will other Hopium members do the same? We need to keep Supreme Court democratic to reverse the gerrymandering that is holding back the state of Wisconsin.
If Crawford is defeated, Republicans will probably appeal the maps to a Republican-dominated court. Preserving fair maps is part of the message of the Postcards to Voters effort.
With around 100 state assembly and roughly 35 state senate seats, I can understand how maps could be unfair and in need of redrawing. However, looking at statewide election results in the eight US House districts, I'm not sure how unfair those current maps are. It's a big state with a few small blue islands -- area-wise -- and politically equally divided.
To carve into those blue areas and draw the pieces out to the rural areas to decrease their redness seems to me to be classic gerrymandering. For example, I think I could get a new blue House district by carving out of northern Milwaukee County and connecting it to Green Bay via a 120 mile strip about 5 miles wide -- along Lake Michigan. The district would look like a barbell, but it would be blue, and the state would still have more red districts than blue.
Thank you! I corrected that. In response to Joan in Ca. Regarding my typo in the spelling of his name. It is Casar, not Cesar! He and Jasmine Crockett, AOC, Melanie Stansbury and Maxwell Frost are the kinds of voices the DNC needs to feature. New, young, fearless leaders.
Simon I am so glad you are going to take Sundays to spend time resting and with family. (This long post does not look like you are doing that tho!). If you are not rested, we cannot get your incredible advice. THANK YOU for everything. You are the first place I subscribed too and will always continue with you. I took a day off calling my Senators (TX - UGH) and everyone but me, received a "form BS letter" from Cornyn stating he stands firmly behind Musk and T. I almost fell off my chair. SO - I will keep calling and writing and pick out 1-2 specific things from his BS letter to fight agains. Have a wonderful day, you deserve it. I am working on remaining positive through my actions (now my speech needs to catch up with these).

The economic boycott is a prelude to the tactic of a general strike, which we may need in the future. It's nicely passive-aggressive.

State assembly and senate maps were redrawn. Wisconsin still needs to address gerrymandered congressional district maps.
I would really love to see someone present an example of what "fair" congressional districts would look like in Wisconsin.
Did so yesterday.
Because I am not wealthy, I appreciate the strategic donating advice from Simon!
I just donated $100 to Susan Crawford Candidate for Supreme Court Justice, Wisconsin in April 2025.
I'm donating as well. I also donate regularly to the WisDems and the Waukesha Dems. Great organizers!
May I add another voice in Congress that I find strong and clear? Greg Casar of Texas, Chair of the Progressive Caucus. Young and fired up.
I live in deep red E TX and I will check him out. Thank you!
I think it’s “Casar.” I just heard him talk on Inside With Jen Psaki. He seems like an excellent communicator! I’d love to hear more from him.
