Things like use of a hotel room is an export to the visitor like you said. But also things like software expertise, customer service banks in other counties and so forth. I think an internationally available online class is another example.
Thanks again Simon. Message received. I have been emailing to tell stories about the effects of their cuts. I will keep doing that, but I will call this week, because I agree, this is a national emergency. The economy is ready to fall.
I am also calling my broker. I have 2 kids in their 30’s, and they are not doing as well as I did at that age.
Self reporting: Called and emailed Rep. Jimmy Panetta, called Senators Schiff (message) and Padilla (spoke with assistant). Bought more supplies for 4/5/25 protest in San Jose and attended training on how to stay out of (bad) trouble at a (good trouble) protest. Worked more on protest poster. Checked whether SCOTUS has oral argument set on Trump vs JGG the Alien Enemies Act case / Venezuela. Stayed up to date on as much as possible of what's going on. Thanked 2 law firms by email for standing up to Trump.
I contacted my senators, Schumer and Gillibrand. I don't know if it will do any good. Trump looked so happy in the Rose Garden. He did not look like a serious leader reluctantly doing what he had to do to help his country. Maybe he was imagining that he was thirty years younger clinching a real estate deal. The tariffs are arbitrary because he just wants to feel powerful, inflict harm, and get attention. He probably never learned a thing about tariff since he decided decades ago that world trade is unfair to the US. I guess he'll enjoy all the calls asking for mercy, with accompanying "incentives".
Hi Deirdra, yes...I can assure you that inside every madman are the memories of a lonely child who was chronically neglected, abused, berated, insulted, or tortured. :( As they say, "Hurt people hurt people." It's another reason to turn our collective attention to helping support parents of infants and toddlers, so they can be the best parents they can be.
Rob Shapiro…. That was awesome, man. Like just an awesome breakdown of all the moving parts. Just awesome. Thanks Simon, for having him on! I’m sharing this.
I just listened to the recording. The idea that all of this boils down to Trump’s will to power (his need to dominate everyone—now the world)—makes a lot of sense. Part of it may be Putin, but also his personality and what appears to be creeping dementia.
🤓. I study economics for fun. I wasn’t kidding, the knitting of the moving parts into a whole was wonderfully done and for me, completely satisfying.
I have always understood that TRex 47 is motivated by his angry narcissism. I enjoyed the confirmation. But the broadening of my understanding of the global economics…. Well. It was awesome.
Since I started listening to you … i have felt moe upbeat … sometimes not. But I feel lucky that I can call my Representatives and senators and contribute. And I was able to contribute to Susan Crawford’s campaign!! Her win will help me keep up my hope going forward. Thx Simon!!!
just as Corey Booker’s speech heartened me incredibly, I was heartened by an interview on April 1 on NPR‘s morning edition with the Yale professor Jason Stanley, who is leaving his position at Yale and going to the University of Toronto because he says he cannot any longer bear the war on knowledge, he is also an expert on fascism having authored the book how fascism works as well as the book how propaganda works. he thinks universities cushioned by their endowment, need to stand up and not capitulate as Columbia has done, so I applaud him, and also hope he will inspire other professors and universities wirit large to follow his lead in standing up to Trump and his attack on universities, science and knowledge.
I thought Trump was following the playbook written by the right-wing Project 2025. I didn't think he knew enough to even be able to analyze any of this -- could he even write an Executive Order on his own?? His advisers don't want to contradict him -- they are pulling his strings. Playing into his power/will to dominate......
After listening to Mr. Shapiro, it might be worse than I thought. Given that the tariffs could benefit or at least not harm wealthy people, maybe Trump's advisors (Lutnick) are focused on making these tariffs stick.
I shared the interview of Rob Shapiro with my Facebook circle, my pastor who holds a degree in economics, and my county Dems.
I griped at my MAGA congressman about tariffs and got this infuriating response..
Dear Dr. Pardee,
Thank you for contacting me regarding tariffs. I appreciate hearing from you.
I hate tariffs. Tariffs hurt consumers and damage every economy that imposes them, but tariffs cause even more pain to our trading partners, which gives us enormous leverage that President Trump has already used quite effectively to secure our borders. Now, he is turning them against countries that impose tariffs on our producers. As a result, Argentina is already proposing a 100% free trade agreement with the United States. If that's where these tariffs are leading, it could produce a golden age of global free trade and the peace and prosperity that accompanies it.
So, if the president is using tariffs in order to achieve higher objectives such as securing our borders or free trade agreements, I think the tariffs are worth it for now.

You're not alone Emily, we live in Rescue. McClintock has been a worthless carpetbagger in District 5 for 15yrs. He's never even lived in our District. My husband & I take turns calling his office daily. You have friends 😊
Now that we've imposed tariffs on penguins living on islands in the South Pacific, I'm sure they will help us achieve the higher objectives of border security and free trade.
My fellow respondents might find the following letter that I sent to my NC Senators and congressperson a useful model if hunting for the right words to express an opinion on the subject of today’s essay:
Dear . . . .,
Please consider this respectful request of your constituent that you exert your authority to rein in the usurpation of your prerogatives by the current administration. It is not believable that our Congress agrees that this nation should be economically crippled by a tariff war with our closest allies and with the destruction of important Government entities that were brought into being by representatives of the American people such as USAID, the Department of Education and on, and on . . . . For example, if we as a people want to bring manufacturing back from overseas it should be done by legislation resulting from thorough deliberation by capable representatives like yourself that the American people have sent to Washington for that purpose, and not by the unconstitutional overreach of an executive answering only to an assembly of the rich.
I like. I would also say something like- I have a wide circle of friends who vote, who have a wide circle of friends who vote, and so on. If we don't see a change in direction, then maybe you should be writing up your resume.
Contacted Gallego, Kelly AND Ciscomani. Thanks for sending out the video Simon.
What are service imports and exports. Tourism?

Putin must be so pleased with Trump today. 🤬

Me too. One kid okay, other just got terminated [USAID grantee].
I'm so sorry for your child's loss.

What a list! You are an inspiration, Judy.
Awesome! So active. Panetta's my Rep, too. I call him a lot. Headed from Santa Cruz to SF for Hands Off Saturday.

Stephen Miller is the madman behind Trump!
Ever try putting a picture of a schirmmutze on top of a picture of Miller's head?
Dead ringer for Eichmann.
That's downright scary, but unsurprising. His facial expression radiates cruelty.
Stephen Miller is a real psychopath.
You know what they say: “Behind every madman is a madman.”

Yes! Exactly.
Thank Simon! This video.

What a horrifying response. At so many levels.
I crept out of my shell to get active in my county DCC in order to stand against this sort of evil nonsense. We are in California’s red zone.

We are in Mi Wuk Vlg near Twain Harte near Sonora in Tuolumne County. Hello neighbor 🤓

Indubitably…
