More and more Americans are finally realizing that Donald Trump is a reverse King Midas: Everything he touches turns to shit. He inherited the best economy of any incoming president in decades – Biden made the American economy the envy of the world. And in just two-three months Trump has managed to drive it into the abyss. Worse, he’s pulling down the entire global economy along with him.
Incredible! One man, his megalomania and delusions!
We have a monumental fight to limit the damage and seize back power. Democrats can do this. Together, we ARE doing this!
China is considering a ban on Hollywood movies. Lest you think this an inconsequential detail, China is the world’s second-largest market for America’s movie industry – an industry that is struggling.
Perhaps you should revise that to "Everything he touches turns to shit FOR US." He himself is grabbing the gold and the crypto, probably storing them all in a dacha in Russia.
America is NOT well-positioned for a trade war with China. True enough, China’s exports to the US far exceed those going the other way, but this is not the whole story. Already, China is placing limitations on rare-earth metals that are critical to America’s military and tech industry.
And imagine this scenario: Tomorrow Xi Jinping announces an embargo on the USA; no industrial parts whatsoever will be shipped until Trump drops his tariffs. Given our reliance on China, America’s manufacturing industry (and more) would come to a screeching halt.
As someone posted earlier, I hate MAGA and all it stands for, whatever the hell it stands for. Maybe the MAGans don't even know what that is. It's a hate-filled, religious-waco, money scam designed to ruin America. You can't fix stupid.
Trump has paused the sweeping reciprocal tariffs the U.S. imposed on dozens of countries this week… Economists said the tariffs could cause a severe global recession, and major investors warned of even worse, up to a possible "economic nuclear winter."
We are and we have to keep at it. We have to stay strong against this ridiculous, vengeful bunch of crooks. We can do it. Saturday's Hands Off was empowering. And it was peaceful.
Trump is proud of his moniker "Trump the Ripper" and is the perfect companion for "Vlad the Destroyer." There's absolutely not a shred of humanity to be found in Trump nor his minions who prop him up.
Thank you, Simon for your continued focus. I called Alsobrooks, Raskin, and Van Hollen and asked them to stop the destruction of Social Security and to rescind the tariffs. I got a person at Congressman Raskin's office, so I wonder if people have stopped calling him. I also wrote my postcards to NJ voters this morning. I'll be at my grandson's high school baseball game this afternoon, but hope to watch your interview with Senator Kaine later. And his latest book, Walk, Ride, Paddle, is a great read.
For the past week or so I've been wondering why there has been this major ramp-up by MAGA to essentially de-professionalize the workforce and push everyone into factory work. It's so regressive and against everything that I remember growing up with as an Italian-American. My great-grandparents from Italy would have been horrified at the idea of saying college is worthless and factory work is what we should aspire to do. It's irrational! Every prior generation has been upwardly mobile in their goals, actualized or not. The idea was to do better. I think we are seeing the ugly outcome of decades of neoliberalism, where the social safety net was eroded resulting in cynicism about government and now hatred of those who have education and expertise. It's about taking the country to the level of the white MAGA men without college degrees, so they won't have to do anything to adapt to a changing workforce. Instead, they'll make us adapt. Look at the DEI purges- that's what this is about.
There have been some excellent articles today talking about "MAGA Maoism," where hyper-masculinity is tied to this push for manual labor and other forms of work considered sissified. Essentially the plan is to start with the federal workers who have been laid off and move them into factory work when things get bad enough (enter the crashed economy). Scott Bessent was on Tucker Carlson, saying "The president is reordering trade… we are shedding excess labor in the federal government… that will give us the labor we need for the new manufacturing.” Then you have Lutnick all excited about the prospect of Americans putting screws into iPhones.
Setting aside the improbability of instant factory construction, I can't tell whether this is part of the messaging being used to calm MAGA down or if it is indeed behind the irrational economic policies we are seeing- is this the endgame? In the past, neoliberalism has served as a barrier between the working class and fascism, where the rich would typically step in to protect themselves. Now, as neoliberalism is colliding with this insurgent right-wing populism, I'm not so sure it can hold them off this time.
Trump doesn't care about his MAGA peeps. And many of them don't either, they just follow the leader because they are a cult.
If we become an uneduactaed Idiocracy, we are easier to rule. The more downtrodden we are, he believes we will be easier to rule. Its all about domination and gaslighting. And if we are easier to rule it will be easier for him to steal the Treasury. That's his goal, 330 million people all under his thumb and 100 to 500 billionaires as his "friends,"
That's the way I have it figured. To bad daddy and mommy didn't love him enough and left that gaping hole in the center of his heart and soul.
If they cared about supporting American products, they wouldn’t be cutting federal funding to, for example, farmer training programs in Washington State. Farmers are aging and retiring, and there aren’t enough young farmers to replace them. Some farms have programs to train new ones, but they need some subsidies from the federal government.
I heard somewhere that part of Project 2025 is that only 10% of people should go to college. But manufacturing? AI and robots are going to be doing most of that work. I guess they just want massive slums?
What is wrong with these Republicans?. How they can allow this to happen is beyond me. I guess as long as they get their salaries, benefits, and donations they don’t care about anybody else. This seems to go for the Democrats as well. Trump needs to be impeached ASAP, but we don’t want Vance either. We don’t want anybody Trump hired into his cabinet. We need to rid ourselves from all of them! Trump is like a cancer. If we don’t stop him, it will be “curtains” for us all!!
Hell, I'm wondering where the billionaires are at. Can't they rustle up enough funds to bribe a few Congressmen or something? Geez. Other than a couple of lawsuits, they've been pretty quiet.
Impeachment will more than likely be symbolic. Once we take the House we can start it, and sure, he will then be the 3 time impeached president. But it takes 67 Senators to convict and unless there is a major reorientation in the Republican Party away from MAGA, it is hard to see it (though not impossible). I'm not against it, but doubt it will be the way that he is removed from office.
I called my Senators to demand that they stop our mass economic suicide attempt. I didn't phrase it exactly like that but that was the idea. And I was polite.
I’ve been calling Mike Lawler’s office daily. If anyone here is in NY17, please call!! He’s doing nothing to counteract the tariffs, cuts to Medicaid or the assault on Social Security. Email him too. If you get voicemail leave a message. He’s one of the vulnerable Rs.
Do you ever get a person? I call Maxwell Frost to thank him, and I get a person every time. I have never gotten a person calling any office of Rick Scott or Ashley Moody. And never a call back. Rick Scott's office tried to add me to their email list which I had to block.
You might try calling their different district offices instead of their D.C. line. I did get through once to Adam Schiff at one of his 5 district offices. So now I am about 1 for 40 on calling Adam to get a human.
Quite a critique - I applaud you. As well as the mobilisation against Trump and Rs it's really important that Dems explain what they would do differently to address the concerns of the American people. In the UK we've seen awful governments get re-elected because the opposition was unelectable. Recent polls show that the Democrats are electable and are winning and will win. Meantime, we all mark the days of this hateful administration on our metaphorical prison cell walls.
Respectfully we are showing what we will do differently every day - not crash the economy, not abandon our allies, not betray our Constitution, not cut health care to almost 100m, not give tax cuts to billionaires. Now is about opposing and stopping. Later this year depending on the damage done we can craft an agenda for salvaging what is left and building a better day.
Yes, you're right and I understand the priority to oppose then create an agenda/manifesto. Re-building America, its government, institutions, society and place in the world is going to be a huge undertaking. It will need an ambition akin to that of FDR in the 1930s. Sincerest respect.
Yes, and it is wrong to believe that is what we need to be focusing on now rather than successfully blocking the damage being done now. It creates an impression that we are doing now, and what must be done, isn't sufficient which is in my view wrong and something that creates demobilization. It is not just wrong it is a deeply unhelpful sentiment.
I take your point and defer to your expertise. I also salute the huge mobilisation of people across the US in peaceful protests against this uniquely revolting administration and President. You and Hopium are certainly playing your part. Thank you.
Called my D senators and R rep. Mentioned my ancestor who fought in the Revolutionary war to free the public from repression by this kind of personality.
Here is some simple advice for dealing with the MSM. If Dolos is breaking the law, the MSM should be compelled with a threat of boycotting their advertisers and cable providers (i.e. the bundles) to report this fact. This simple process will reduce the need to keep following his aberrant behavior as it will be self-identified by the media.
There is a simple rule: “If he’s talking, he’s lying.” So, flip the script. Do not cover him in real time for fact-checking. This merely allows him to spread the lies further. Please follow Professor Lakoff (www.theframelab.org).
When Mary Trump plays clips of Dolos speaking on her channel, she deliberately distorts his voice— the tool of a clinical psychologist. Dr. Trump understands the importance of managing his favorite communications channel (i.e. his voice) to an annoying register. Use AI AND HAVE HIS NOSE GROW AS HE IS SPEAKING. CALL HIM THE ORANGE PINOCCHIO!! Here is an example of AI used for the good when it comes to bringing jobs back from China and other low-wage manufacturing domiciles per Ron Vara, aka Peter Navarro (26 seconds): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qn5RamAEt3E .
For example, did Dolos speak the truth today? Was today a lawful day or not? This makes filtering his need to prevaricate the default instead of cataloging the ongoing lies. Pig-Pen (i.e. the Dolos advisor with many shirts and a bad shave) wants to flood the zone with “s…”as he follows his spiritual leader, Lenin of Moscow’s Tomb fame. As Maddow and others have suggested, watch what they do. Life becomes much simpler this way.
As always, for multiple months, I reached out to my all-Republican delegation. I actually got through to the young aids of my representative for two days in a row. This was a surprise.
Basically, I explained to the congressional aids about the extreme intellectual dishonesty behind the concept of tariffs as modern statecraft and the need for Congress to assert its Article One powers. Per usual, they were polite in taking my message. For my senators, I did leave VMs.

I called my three representatives here in Oregon to encourage them to support Kaine’s resolution and legislation to repeal these stupid tariffs. Nah, go for the alliteration. Mad King Merde.

I believe that. And thx for mentioning it, I couldn’t remember who came up with that line

Trump is proud of his moniker "Trump the Ripper" and is the perfect companion for "Vlad the Destroyer." There's absolutely not a shred of humanity to be found in Trump nor his minions who prop him up.
"Trump the Rip-Off Artist" also seems like a fitting moniker.
Please don’t use the word Artist… there is nothing creative about him and it is offensive to those of us who are indeed Artists.
You have a point, and I have been impressed by your work that I have seen online. But to call Trump an "artist" alludes more to the term "con-artist".
Yeah, I get it… and don’t like that either… prefer “con-man”.
Thanks for looking at my work and for your compliment. Always nice to have one’s work appreciated.
Chazzers, all.
It's like Jack D. Ripper from "Dr. Strangelove".

New manufacturing for what? 1) Americans don't want to work in factories 2) what products would be solely made here? I can't think of much.

I called my Senators to demand that they stop our mass economic suicide attempt. I didn't phrase it exactly like that but that was the idea. And I was polite.
