Friends, we have two events this week, and our May schedule has begun to come together. Sign up, mark them down! A few other housekeeping items:
On May 1st the ability to leave a comment and engage in conversation will only be available to our paid subscribers. Trolls have found our happy home here at Hopium, and I just don’t want to spend time fighting them or let them affect our spirited discussions.
I am posting more on Substack’s new Notes feature. Test it out and let me know what you think. With Twitter continuing to degrade and throttle Substack there is more urgency to finding other ways we can do our work, together.
On the Hopium site I’ve built out the navigation bar to make it easier to find things, see all our upcoming events, etc. Check it out. It includes this link which provides information on how to request me to speak at a future event.

I thought I noticed some troll like activity... I love all my Substack subscriptions. I’m rationalizing my paid accounts by reading and posting as many as I can. I equate it to the many publications like Vanity Fair and my husband’s dozen or so toy train collector magazines, car magazines, Esquire.
I read as many as I can in a day starting with Heather. I’ve had a subscription to her newsletter for years.
Here I feel that I’m getting the truth, meeting people from all over the world and we’re all nice even when we disagree. I never walk away frustrated (at least not from the authors) or angry at posts.
The Tennessee Republicans shot themselves in the foot when they expelled the Justins. That made me mad enough that I donated to the TN Democratic Party and Substack is where I got the link. That made me proud to step in and stand against white supremacy. Felt really good!
I like feeling informed and calm. Not like the other platforms that foment fear and hate. I don’t want to be riled up by some troll who is in the business of rabble rousing for the sake of just playing us against each other.
