This needs to go out across our entire nation. I am appalled at the number of people I know who are completely oblivious, or willfully ignoring, what is happening in our country. The detention centers, the conditions inside them, the ICE brutality ("they deserve it, they're illegal aliens") - THIS NEEDS TO GO OUT ACROSS OUR ENTIRE NATION!!!
The story the gentleman told in testimony reminds me of the famous WWII documentary footage in which the people from nearby towns to Auschwitz-Birkenau were brought to the camp as soldiers liberated the facility. Neighbors claimed not to know, but the smell carried in the air from miles away.
To this day, the soil at these locations has high concentrations of human remains.
and the one town had voted against hitler and told the americans so; it doesn't matter, they were told; you are all responsible. those folks got off lightly, compared to what the red army did; i highly recommend the book, a woman in berlin, which is also a film with nina hoss.
Keep in mind as well that DHS, through their outright false statements, and especially their inflammatory recruitment ads, are intentionally recruiting the most racist and unempathetic to serve as ICE agents and detention center custodians. Add to that the inherent mob mentality in any group, certainly made worse by the prescribed mission of ICE.
After watching Congresswoman Morrison's video, I immediately called my stupid rep to tell her not to look away. She can't claim to be ignorant after her colleague revealed what is going on. I had lots more to say, but as always her staffer didn't react, just said "I will pass that along."
I hope her staffer is tired or heartsick after hearing all this for the last year. But she probably loves knowing that people are suffering needlessly, because it owns the libs.
It is extra annoying that my stupid rep is literally a non-White immigrant herself. But she is full MAGA.
Haven't watched the video yet but I will share. Just wanted to pop on and say that Jim Acosta just had Beto on covering the same points/questions that Simon laid out in his article this morning re: detention camp construction. He was explicit about the gulag intention.
These are powerful testimonies. Equally powerful were the testimonies of ICE survivors who appeared before a Congressional hearing yesterday overseen by Congressman Garcia. No funding for ICE. Everyone associated with this should be impeached from the "President" on down, especially Kristi Noem and Stephen Miller. These are deranged and damaged people who have forfeited their right to lead this nation. They are fueled by hate, fear, ignorance, and greed.
I think this is the best example I've seen of a normal American showing patriotism and standing for what is right. What a compelling statement before the Arizona board.
Man....for however uninspired I have been by Congress as a whole this last year+, I have NEVER been more inspired by the American People in my lifetime......This has been the best demonstration of how leaders follow the American People, not the other way around. We've been told that from the stump for years, but I don't think a lot of us really believed it until we found ourselves in a situation we simply couldn't accept and found our leaders falling short of the moment. It's been inspiring to watch the American people lead the movement to counter all of this and satisfying to watch our electeds catch up to us little by little....I'll never forget the lessons of this in our history. Parties aren't elected committees....they are a big collection of ordinary members and non-member allies bound by common purpose. Where goes the big body, so go the committees. Not knocking on Dem electeds here either....just writing this down for my own clarity....WE are the ones we've been waiting for
The speaker at the town council in Arizona was absolutely correct about the Nazi Germany example. In 1969 at age 18, I visited the Mauthausen Concentration Camp outside of the town of Mauthausen, Austria. We were a group of girls on a bus, and we drove right through the town to get to the camp and then again when leaving the camp. I stared at the townspeople both times, thinking how could you have tolerated the horrific conditions (forced labor, medical experiments, gas chamber and crematoria) including the death of 95,000 people? Town was too close not to smell death, especially the smoke from the crematoria. I was repulsed not only by the camp itself but by seeing the townspeople who knew what was going on and turned away, a real world confrontation with man's inhumanity. Today I am repulsed by what the media reports about the horrible conditions at the existing ICE detention facilities. I apppreciate everyone who is standing up to oppose both existing and proposed facilities and the city councils who refuse to approve the new ones.
Our government is advancing the Fourth Reich on American soil and must be destroyed and (metaphorically) burned to the fucking ground. Trump, Vance, and Johnson all impeached. Miller fired, humiliated and prosecuted. ENd this nightmare however we can (legally)
I got to thinking, as this gentleman was testifying, about how just seventeen months ago I was among the great number of American citizens who would have had little idea of any atrocities carried out by my federal government. So, today it is not quite so difficult to understand that there are an overwhelming number of citizens who just don’t know, mostly because they can’t bear to look up from their personal entanglements to see a bigger story; mostly because it is much easier, mentally, to stay “low information” or to feed oneself the lie that there is nothing more they can do.
So I won’t be one who says, “How can ANYONE not be horrified…”.
That having been said, I am now one who sometimes does get up to speak to my county Board of Supervisors when I am moved to and I know it isn’t easy to feel worthy or to find the right words. I am profoundly grateful to the gentleman who spoke so well against the development of an ICE detention center near his home.

So "illegal alien" = subhuman? WTAF?

Also Zone of Interest.
The testimony and video by Representative Morrison are powerful! Thank you!

The gravitas of this calm, slow speaking of truth to power is immense.

I agree that the video of the Arizona meeting is profoundly inspiring. Everyone should see it.

Few are guilty, all are responsible
I posted on Facebook and BlueSky. this is what everyone needs to hear. Thanks, Simon!

We are all responsible for what happens in our community. Powerful!
