The rest of the world, except in Russia, China and N. Korea are just laughing at how absurd all of this is.

So true. We have a friend visiting from Germany. She's taking a group of students to the US for 2 weeks, as part of a long standing exchange program. This time, for the first time, the German parents were reluctant to send their kids to the US. She had to calm their fears about the US by telling them that not everyone in the US supports the madness of the T regime.

Actually most of us are horrified. We see a gulag system being built, masked thugs snatching people from streets and workplaces, troops in the streets and show trials about to begin.

WiseAssumer in Las Cruces's avatar

Most of us are horrified, and most non-white people have reason to be frightened by MAGA. Most of us white people are not frightened, though, and will fight to get justice for non-whites as much as we can.

I hope.

Good morning, all -

The calls are working! Tomorrow evening, Sen. Kim will hold a tele-town hall on the budget & give latest thoughts/strategy! TACO man TACOed again!

On Saturday, I knocked doors for Sherrill & state assembly candidates in a working class neighborhood. All the places I've knocked have been diverse, all are ready and waiting to vote--folks are still wanting to vote on election day, but some had submitted VBM ballots. I dropped mine off yesterday!

Moms are having another big weekend of door knocking/phone banks for Mikie in mid-October, and a final push weekend in early Nov. We are working hard for Mikie, and NJ appreciates all the donations, phone calls/texts and postcards. It is making a difference!

Please support gun safety in your communities-- there were FOUR mass shootings over the weekend, every single one is a tragedy with lifelong impact for families and communities. Text JOIN to 64433 if you'd like to start taking action w Moms in your area.

Both Mikie and Spanberger are longtime gun safety advocates, and both have been endorsed by Moms/Everytown. Go to gunsensevoter.org for more info [end of spiel].

Keep going!

Lisa you are amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for all that you do, and bringing it all in here. So great to see.

Lisa Iannucci's avatar

Thank you for the kind words.

I’m a big fan, too. Glad to hear you’re experiencing positive Mikie feedback. I’m pushing back against the panic among my peers because of Emerson poll and stoking by the media. Head down, keep working.

Mikie tailgated with the Giants yesterday and they won their first game of the season! She quipped about going to the Jets game tonight. 🤣

Working on postcards between f/t job and spouse’s jury duty.

Nice - she has been out and about quite a bit in N. Jersey!

Thank you, Lisa! This is wonderful. You inspired me to do my first door knocking event this weekend and I loved it! It felt amazing.

Thank you for your inspiring work!

Brava, Lisa. You are inspiring. Just back from the homeland (Italy!) and I'm jumping back in. Thanks for all you do, Claire

I echo everyone's comments. I take comfort in the fact that you are just a state away.

Emailed OH senators and my rep re: congress’ sole responsibility to impose tariffs. Used example of US considering $20 bil in aid to Argentina, a country who has picked up a large share of our previous China market in crop sales, while the Prez considers a bailout to our farmers who have lost significant crop market share caused by tariffs.

Barbara Moschner's avatar

It was heart breaking to watch the video of ICE officers chasing that poor man on his bicycle!

Self report: I called Cruz and Cornyn's respective offices regarding taking back the tariff responsibility and not cutting healthcare subsidies, and stopping the rampage of ICE.

Here's hoping for Schumer and Jeffries success in negotiating, shutdown or no shutdown. Loud and proud!

Purobi Phillips's avatar

I did not know Simon uses the word Fuck. Look what the republicans did to you! Watching the video of a bunch of fatm uniformed adults chasing a delivery guy on a bike, I shook my head in disbelief and shame.

Nora's avatar

He said once that he was a NY guy and NY people, in general, like to swear. So, I think that's natural to him and now that he's gotten so passionate, he uses words like that to good effect.

BeeBeeinNYC's avatar

I think that's also the "Substack Effect."

All these familiar faces, with their suits, ties, contact lenses, blazers, and high heels, who used to share time with us in between Preparation H and Midol commercials, are now coming to us with their dodgy technology, hair doing what it does, eyeglasses, sneakers, pets, kitchens, bedrooms, and alcoves, and are cursing up a shitstorm.

Chez Substack!

Personally, I love it.

Claire from Arlington VA's avatar

I think it's fabulous. I remember the first time I heard Simon curse and at first I gasped and then I was cheering in my room! I'm from NY originally as Simon is, and cursing is part of our vernacular. I agree with Nora that Simon uses those words to good effect when he's showing the severity of an issue. Another one of our Substack friends, Glenn Kirschner, does the same -- and usually apologizes for being a Jersey boy who can't help it. Steve Schmidt, also from Jersey, does the same. As someone who grew up in NY and now lives in the WDC area, I always say -- You can take the girl out of NY, but you can't take NY out of her!

Self reporting: Calls to both offices of my two senators and my representative; call to AG and Pritzker's office.

Comments to AG Raoul and Pritzker: Thank you for your hard work.

Comments to legislators: 1st Amendment essential; invoke 25th Amendment; National Guard and military out of cities; military gathering plus president = huge security risk; government shutdown: trust the legislators to know what makes the most sense; retribution beginning with Comey indictment; tariffs problem for big/small businesses and consumers; Homan's $50K; health: immunization recommendations, impeach Kennedy, long-term consequences of cuts to CDC, NIH, and university medical research; finally, and most importantly, thank you, the senator/representative, and every single person who works in your office for getting up and coming to work during such a trying time.

Self-report: I called my 2 Virginia Dem Senators and 1 Dem Rep to tell them that they need to rally behind Schumer and Jeffries. And also I said that we have an emergency invasion of our cities happening now NOW and they need to hold briefings, hearings, debate about the masked armed private MAGA army being sent into our cities. I also said, that it is important to speak up NOW because what happens in Chicago and Portland, can happen here in VA. Soon, hopefully we will have a Dem Governor, Lt Governor and Attorney General in VA, and VA will be a targeted state too!

Lisa Iannucci's avatar

That's good, stealing for today's calls!

Leni Nazare's avatar

Yes, tried to steal from Simon and put his message in my own words, more or less , and my own context.

Claire from Arlington VA's avatar

Thanks, friends. Doing the same right now. Calling both Sen. Kaine and Warner, and Congressman Beyer. All Dems. I also send them postcards AND to Chuck Schumer. The postcards say "WE FOUGHT FOR YOU, NOW FIGHT FOR US."

I also have 100 GOTV postcards to get out for Abigail!

Leni Nazare's avatar

Great line: We fought for you, now fight for us!!!!

Simon, thank you for the update. It was quite a weekend.

I called Congressman Raskin and Senators Alsobrooks and Van Hollen to urge them to stand strong in the budget talks. I also contacted Governor Moore to ask him to sign on to the Oregon suit against Trump as soon as possible. I'm writing postcards to Virginia today.

I find it interesting that Trump did a double TACO on meeting with the Dems. I suspect that Republicans' internal polling on the shutdown must be pretty bad.

Trump cut a great campaign ad for Dems this weekend, bragging about all the "high-quality" gold he's using to decorate his office. Americans are buying Hamburger Helper because beef is so expensive. Americans are facing skyrocketing health care costs. And Trump is bragging about how much gold he's got. Marie Antoinette had nothing on this guy.

I live in PDX and legal observe at both the Immigration Courts and have, until recently, (after a threat by what appeared to be a proud boy) done legal observing at the ICE facility. What I have observed when I have arrived at the facility are a few (3 or 4) protesters that camp out from the previous night. On Mondays, there is a group of elderly Quakers that hold a weekly vigil. Nope, troops are not needed for this!

We've voted already here in NJ - no point in waiting. (And if you're in Jersey City, please vote for James Solomon for Mayor & the Solomon-aligned slate for Council and Board of Education).

NJ, don't forget to TURN YOUR BALLOT OVER! :) There's more voting on the other side.

Lisa Iannucci's avatar

YEP! I have found that older folks of color in NJ really like voting in person & are kinda set in their ways, but us youngsters can certainly do it!

Janet Hopkins's avatar

I already submitted my ballot and didn't see any voting "on the other side".....not sure what you mean.

Moishe Swift's avatar

Do you live in an area with more than just gubernatorial and legislative elections? Towns with lots of elections (including school board/mayoral/council/etc.) will probably be more than just one page of bubbles.

Janet Hopkins's avatar

Yes, we had county and local member choices as well as Board of Ed. All fit on one page.

Doing a phone bank for CA 50, almost have 60 postcards ready to send. Should be out by Tuesday.

Might not have much time to read the post yet, but I will catch up later on.

I have been helping run local canvassing events for Prop 50. The reception has been really good.

Ekaterine Terlinden's avatar

Hi, Jenny. Participated in a "California Strong" demonstration on Saturday. Was walking home with my "Yes on 50" sign, and I got stopped by a gentleman on the street who asked me to explain what a yes vote would mean, since he'd been hearing conflicting things on Spanish-language television. Great chance for person-to-person outreach, and I think I convinced him to vote "Yes."

Jenny Ellsworth's avatar

That's fantastic. We had a few people wander over to ask about our canvassing event, too. We met in a neighborhood park and had a couple of little tables and signs so canvassers could pick up lit and get an assigned area, and it drew in people walking their dogs or out jogging.

Do you speak Spanish? Finding bilingual canvassers has been a real headache where I live. I took it in high school but refreshing with Duolingo has not left me feeling ready to explain Prop 50!

Ekaterine Terlinden's avatar

Sadly, Jenny, I don't speak Spanish, and you're right, it's too nuanced to convey easily. This gentleman spoke English, but I was pleased to set the record straight, because he was older and it sounded like he still got all his news from local television.

Self report re. Portland: message to AG Torrez and Governor Michelle Lujan-Grisham

Please officially condemn the deployment of National Guard troops to Portland, OR because it is against the will of Governor Tina Kotek, and there is no valid reason or authority for it. To authorize “full force” against the residents is outrageous. There is no emergency, only more assault on the right to free speech and other freedoms in America. These are acts of illegal political persecution by this blatantly authoritarian government. It's unAmerican! Please join or otherwise support the lawsuit that has been filed by Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield.

Good idea. I'll do the same.

It is comical to see this, but also so scary to see that this administration would use military force to try and arrest Americans. This administration is using our tax payer dollars to arrest Americans.

Thanks for all you do , Simon and community. Calls are in to WI Republican members regarding our 4 part agenda and my disgust over their complacency. Call in to Dem Senator regarding our 4part agenda with a plea to be louder and stronger. Calls to WI AG and governor will come this afternoon. New postcarding campaigns are available so I’ll be writing more cards today.
