My favorite T-shirt is I Really Do Care, Don't You? a Planned Parenthood South Texas t-shirt that I wear these days. I hope this picture comes through.

On the human level the 'I really don't care' folk are pathetic, unfortunately they cause damage for the caring majority.

The Great Gatsby party says is all: “They were careless people.” And of course Daisy’s reckless, drunken behaviors result in several human tragedies and she suffers no consequences. Nor does her husband, and the other reckless people who surround them. Just like our GOP.

Careless with utmost lack of concern for health and human safety.

Anyone who knows even a little about construction knows about the dangers of asbestos. (Navy shipyards too.) As the New Republic stated: "There is no safe level of asbestos exposure, and the fibers can stay in the air for days." (FAR more hazardous than working in a coal mine.)

When the East Wing was built in the 1940s, the use of asbestos in construction was at its peak. It is why there is a very strict protocol and methods that the law requires to be used when going in to do ANY construction, renovation, or demolition of a structure where asbestos is present. The process takes great care --- and TIME. There is no possible way they adhered to the proper standards for abatement given the time involved.

So glad Obama is getting out there, we really need him!

I literally felt like throwing up seeing Trump with his buds at that party. Meanwhile, the caregiver who helps my daughter (chronic illness) lost SNAP for her 3 kids. We will offer her assistance if she'd like. The local food bank has our donation. We must help each other and our compassion for each other shows how disconnected and cruel this Administration and Republicans really are.

I’m off to an ICE Out of Home Depot protest this afternoon and I will also be passing out No ICE/CPB allowed in this establishment signs to small businesses on Central St, a shopping area in Evanston. My hairdresser will help pass them out to his neighboring businesses. Evanston has had multiple ICE attacks in recent days, one that was written up in The NY Times today. Very traumatic for everyone, gave my husband and I both nightmares last night! I’m still working to get my Resolution of Condemnation introduced in our city council…I’ve been in touch with a major city official who is very supportive and explained the reticence I’m experiencing as likely due to being overwhelmed with concerns about ICE activity in our community…I immediately felt, in response to that, that as Obama used to say, legislators should be capable of walking and chewing gum at the same time…and frankly, passing my resolution, which specifically mentions ICE activity in our community, would be a perfect response to what is happening here! Re affirming our commitment to the Constitution and calling upon all legislators, local, state, and federal to fight as hard as possible to overcome this authoritarian takeover seems to me to be entirely relevant and important at this time! I sent the aldermen I was advised to reach out to a copy of their own oath of office, supplied to me by Deborah Potter, (thanks so much!), and I have left additional phone messages and continue to send emails…yesterday I wrote asking for a meeting with them with a group of residents of our community who very much would like to see this resolution passed. So far, I haven’t moved beyond the two aldermen I was advised would be most supportive, but I did write to the leaders of Indivisible Evanston yesterday to ask for more support from them and their ideas about how to pursue this further…I’m starting to wonder whether perhaps organizing folks in other wards to urge their aldermen to support it would also be a good idea at this point, not sure yet. I won’t give up, that’s for sure! I’m also organizing a Stand Strong demonstration near the Northwestern University campus for Monday Nov. 17th at lunchtime,urging/supporting/advocating for them to not obey in advance, stand strong against Trump admin demands, and to support students’ and faculty’s free speech rights…hoping to get at least 30 folks to show up with signs along those lines…want to let N.U know that the community cares about what they do.

All fabulous, and yes, recruiting people in other aldermen's wards would matter. There's nothing like pressure from the people who can vote someone in - or out.

And besides, more city-wide organizing is bound to pay off for other policies and projects.

That's the only reason I brought it up. They didn't give any info on the sponsors or the backer...

JCOK's avatar

Yep, as best I can tell from the data, Atlas is predicting nearly the same electorate as 2024 or even a slight erosion of Dem unity/participation compared to 2024. This is on both its NJ Gov and NY Mayor polls released today.

That methodology seems implausible given where we are. Maybe even fanatical.

JCOK's avatar

For a little flavor here, most polls put Trump’s approval rate in NJ at about 35%-38%. The respondents to the NJ Atlas poll have Trump at 47% approval. So, Atlas is betting on a very GOP electorate, just like they did in 2024.

Great interview with Pepper. Democrats really took their eye off the ball in 2010, ceding state races to Republicans, and we’ve suffered the consequences since. We can’t let that happen again!

Sure sounds like the Audacious Expansion Fund should increase to 6 states to include Ohio. I’d be up for that!

Great stuff! If u want to hear a similarly good podcast about how Democrats can do a better job in Red States, search on the Bulwark site for an interview by Tim Miller with Heidi Heitkamp (sp), former ND senator, who argued that Democrats should run fresher, younger, less "poll driven" candidates who speak authentically and are willing to take risks. She believes, as do I, that the shift in recent years toward identity driven politics has killed Democratic chances and that we need to tack, dramatically, to the center. She claims that, currently, young people, especially, see nothing attractive about the Democratic party and Democrats need to be a much better job saying what they are for rather than just what they are against.

You might want to read the Strength in Numbers analyses of more center-focused Dems. Or Morris's analyses that Dems are now trusted more to handle the economy, healthcare, inflation, and education. I'd link to individual articles, but so many relate to your post that I'll link to their homepage instead: https://www.gelliottmorris.com/?utm_campaign=profile_chips

That Dems' comms needs to improve and be less poll-driven Simon has talked about extensively. In various conversations, I keep finding that people think the Harris campaign was engaged in identity-driven politics because of their bad info sources and Dems not fighting back on those points, not what she actually said or proposed.

I agree. I’m often surprised at how some people characterize—or mischaracterize—the Harris campaign. I’ve never liked the “move to the center” argument, which is an old one for Democrats. But rather than get into it I’d just say the best candidates are the most energizing ones for their area. I also think a lot of young people like Malcolm Kenyatta are getting the party and they will send it in the right direction.

Young people love Zohran Mamdani and he is left of center. He is everything else you describe. He's young, authentic and taking risks and probably why he is doing so well! I'm not sure we have to tack to the center so much as avoid Identity politics.
