What does it take to change the Senate procedural rules? 60%? What are the chances of 10 Republicans agreeing to the change at this point (assuming no D defections)? Hearing "I object!" from a single voice is grating to say the least.
Senators do not want to give away the power of holds. It may happen, but no one wants to do it. Let's see what Schumer can do today. What Paul and Tuberville are doing is a form of a coup or insurrection, a deeply illiberal attempt to usurp power from the executive, essentially overturning the election results.
Thanks for clarifying and also correcting the Senator blocking ambassadorial appointments. It is incomprehensible to me that they dare undermine both our effectiveness in military preparedness and diplomacy. I remain hopeful we can overcome such antics.
The word is that Tuberville is the front man for one or more reactionary groups that want to staff the military with their own people. His claim that he's using the holds to stop the Pentagon's policy of providing abortion travel for servicemembers in need is a cover story for the real agenda: taking over the military office corps with like-minded authoritarians.
Hi Simon. I have been actively canvassing on Long Island in the Nassau County and Suffolk County local races. While the groups I belong to (Swing Left and Move On) along with the candidates themselves and their campaigns have been very active, there has been little if any activity by the New York State Democratic Party including the Nassau and Suffolk County Democratic Party. I live in NY 03. We are being greatly outspent by the Republicans that shows in the daily barrage of mailers I receive from the Republican Party. I have heard that the Republican Party has allocated $2 million for these local races for the County Legislatures and other local offices. Volunteers along with candidate campaigns cannot effectively counter a Political Party willing to spend millions while our Democratic Party sits on the sidelines. The early voting has been heavily Republican so unless there is a miracle don’t be surprised Wednesday morning to hear about another red wave on Long Island.
Yes, NY is not where it needs to be right now. I don't know how many wake up calls we need. Thank you for your good works, and hoping for the best on Tuesday.
Peter can you please send me info on how to get involved with the groups you referenced? You are 100% correct in that we are being steamrolled here on Long Island and the NY State Democratic Party is literally asleep at the f**kin wheel.
Hi Simon, I just realized I've only ever commented on your posts (twice now since you started) when I've had a suggestion for improvement. Time for kudos, and there have been many other posts that merited compliments. This post in particular is a masterful example of encouragement and outrage (carrot and stick?). Inspiring round up of economic news and polling data combined with the devastating summary of what the Republicans are doing to destroy our democracy = MOTIVATION. Thanks for all you do!
Fortunately, President Biden and Fed chair Powell have ignored the advice of influential "inflation hawk" economists such as Larry Summers. These folks railed against Biden's spending policies that are leading to the significant GDP and employment growth. Summers in particular, who gets an inordinate amount of media attention, thought we needed to throw millions out of work in order to tame inflation. Hopefully, we won't hear much from him anymore.
