Did you see the NYT headline? Why are the papers so down on a great jobs report. Don’t we want people working?

This good news emphasizes the success of steering the country towards a robust economy that will continue provide economic benefits. The Democrats are rebuilding the “ship” while the GOP “ship” is sinking.

and yet NONE of this is breaking through the battered psyche of the American voter. It doesn't matter WHY that is but it sure matters THAT it is. If it were heard or believed they would not be neck and neck.

Or perhaps every good report is simply DISMISSED because people are still struggling and miserable. Or perhaps because Biden lost so much capital in A'stan and now he's building a wall, ignoring 26 laws, and doing a deal with two non-allies of the US: MBS and Bibi N, neither of whom stand up for Free World values as far as I can tell, while ignoring the attacks on women and voting. We ignore all this to our peril!

Biden's age and Harris's unpopularity cannot be changed and there is no drumbeat contradicting the issues of either. I am beginning to long for different candidates. So I fear the third party votes.

(But I do love your charts!)

Who’s ignoring any of this? Are you saying that we can’t celebrate anything that’s going well just because there’s still more that hasn’t been totally resolved yet? Because if that’s the case, we never get to feel good about anything

This is from the heart with best intentions, take it or leave it. Clearly you are venting your frustration with concepts that seem beyond your control. Largely, Nationally, Globally, I suppose they are, for all of us.

But what about smaller and local frustration mediation. What are you doing to feel better about what frustrates you, in your area? Positive actions ease this tension. Simon says here “Hope with a Plan”. But that certainly works in reverse.

Suzc, a few comments: 1) here we don't dump our anxiety out like this in our comments. It's unhelpful and brings others down. Here we channel all this anxiety into constructive actions. What are you doing to help in Virginia this weekend for example? Lots of ways to help.

https://www.hopiumchronicles.com/p/our-winning-virginia-discussion-wdelegate

2) There is a lot in here that you wrote which is just wrong and unfair, starting with ignoring attacks on voting. The President just gave a major address about the threats to our democracy -

https://www.hopiumchronicles.com/p/president-bidens-speech-on-america

3) Regardless of the region of the country or type of race, since Dobbs Democrats just keep overperforming and winning. When people vote, we win, regardless of the polls, which have not been terribly predictive in the last year or so. See here - https://www.hopiumchronicles.com/p/my-september-hopium-political-briefing

So glad you are here with us, but please no more dumping like this. Not in the spirit of our Hopium infused community of action, of your fellow proud patriots and info warriors working to ensure freedom and democracy prevail here, and everywhere. Best, Simon

Greetings Suzc,

I understand your worries and frustration bc my husband and friends share many of same with me. And what I’ve learned being a part of Hopium is this group IMO isn’t ignoring all the tough info; quite the opposite. They are on full alert and vigilant, laser focused on solutions and actions. They are, IMO again, the incredibly strong, clear eyed army of patriots doing everything possible to save our democracy. And wrapping themselves ( ourselves) in all the positivity of all the tremendous work being accomplished by Biden administration and work of HC.

Not naive, not unaware or uninformed ( likely too informed) but unbelievably, endlessly, determined and purpose-filled.

I didn’t understand that at first but now I do. Maybe being hope filled and focusing on positive facts can appear unaware but this group is fueled by their concerns and ( I think) like me, so pleased to be on a site with lots of brilliant hardworking peeps surrounded with hope and and endless action and determination. Personally I was tired of all the negativity I was hearing before I joined HC and I was so glad to find

the strength and enjoyment of real facts/data teamed with can-do actions and resources; hard work getting done.

Do you think this outstanding jobs report will drive Republican interest in a shutdown next month?

Expand full comment

It might, but I think the main thing that drives it is the MAGA nihilists desire to get attention

This happened to Bill Clinton and 94 and 95, and Barack Obama in 2010 and 2011… The statistical markers of great economic progress always pre-day the public truly “feeling it“ by six months to a year. This is why we usually lose some power in our first midterm after electing a Democratic president and starting the process of cleaning up a Republican mess. I firmly believe the American people will be “feeling it“ by next spring, and the combination of that, and the narrative/argument that’s already being made with the Biden campaign ads and all of us along with our Democratic family pundits and surrogates will make progress on our economic numbers among the broader public. It’s our job to know the truth and keep the faith when others don’t yet feel the truth or have faith. Our president is kicking ass at a time when we really need our president to kick ass. I couldn’t be prouder. #TeamBiden #TeamAmerica 🇺🇸

I'm with Simon on trying to get you to see the forest for trees...

First, the world is full of autocratic leaders with utter disregard for human rights like MBS, Netanyahu, Xi, Putin and so forth..Of course the US president has to deal with them. Biden's foreign policy is generally trying to push the fascists in a liberal direction which I hope you see as good! No leader's efforts will ever be perfect but we shouldn't be advocating throwing out the good in want of the perfect.

Second, we are heading into a 2024 landslide for Democrats across the board.

Remember, Trump lost to Hilary by 3 mil votes. Then he lost to Biden by 7 mil votes.

Do you know or can you see a single vote that Trump or the GOP is going to pickup this cycle with their corrupt, criminal anti-democratic behavior..We are actually in the middle of seeing the death spiral of the GOP...Hey GOP..RIP!

Finally, as to the age issue surrounding Joe Biden..the life expectacy of 80 year old healthy white male in America today is 90 which should get the president through a second term..But if he doesn't make it through his second term, we need to rejoice that we'll have a government controlled by Democrats rather than nihilists and sociopaths.

Write postcards and send texts every day!!!

Why have we not been able to frame this success with the majority of Americans? The majority of Americans apparently believe that Republicans do a better job at managing the economy. This is patently false. How do we reframe? How do we move the needle? How do we shift the narrative? I agree with Simon that we absolutely must continue the messaging and hammer out the data that proves Democrats do it better. Yet something more is required. All I want is to see that the majority of people see, believe, and say out loud the truth.

Although I share many of your concerns I’ve chosen to not dwell on them but really focus on the positives. What’s really helped me is the in-depth statistical analysis that Simon provides in his posts. This is the type of current and historical data that most people are completely unaware of but this is the meat that political scientists use to make hypotheses and come to conclusions. For example, the conventional wisdom for the midterms was there would be a red wave but by zeroing in on the data Simon was almost completely alone in predicting this wouldn’t happen, and it didn’t. There may be a general feeling floating around that the democrats are in trouble but the data doesn’t lie. Focusing on the media narrative of what’s going on doesn’t help spread the positive news. I think this great jobs report is a perfect example of what can be used to counteract the idea that everyone is miserable. If we’re going to win, our mindset needs to focus on the positives and spread that word.

“ But under Joe Biden, there’s been a monumental shift. Antitrust enforcement has surged. Efforts to form unions have been protected and encouraged.”

Robert Reich calls this the biggest unreported success of Bidenomics. ⬇️
