I watched it last night and it brought me to tears. I have a 19 year old granddaughter and her father is MAGA. I wish I could send this to him but it would mean the end of all family relations and I don’t want to lose my granddaughter too. I hope someone sends it to him anonymously.

he is the loser. 😩🏁

Curious move. If they want him to win, why wouldn’t they “yes, and” his lies? Why did they release that prisoner to Biden after Trump said they’d do it only for him?

Expand full comment

Maybe they're dumping him for a younger man, like, say, JD!

Expand full comment

No, I think that Putin is able to recognize a dumpster fire when it becomes obvious. And JD is a walking dumpster fire. Hard at this point for anybody to read what drives Putin, (and he works hard to keep it that way), but I suspect he sees what's coming and is trying to find a position from which to defend his position (which appears to have become somewhat precarious).

Perhaps his handlers have concluded that Agent Orange is far too stable to even be an unwitting, witless agent.

I just can’t work out which side of Hanlon’s Razor this stuff is on. Like, is Russia trying to get him elected or trying to keep it close to incite a civil war or just fucking with us generally? Was Vance a dumb pick or a strategic move by Peter Thiel? And so on. It’s probably a waste of my time even to speculate.

Expand full comment

Yes, it is a waste of time to speculate.

Expand full comment

Russia wants Trump to win so that he pulls aid to Ukraine, possibly leaves NATO and destabilizes resistance in Europe, and then potentially he could look at Poland or the Baltic States.

Peter Thiel isn't making strategic moves to win the election, in my opinion. I doubt he has any idea what he is doing. What I think he is doing is trying to have someone he controls eventually as President. The big data operation he runs Palantir would be poised to do very well in a Vance administration, and potentially could become a very dangerous tool. It's, as far as I can tell, a larger and more advanced version of Cambridge Analytica.

But yeah I agree this kind of thing is a waste of time to think about. Let's just kick Trump's ass.

Expand full comment

Well said. Let’s.

Expand full comment

What I had heard at the time, although I am forgetting the details somewhat, was that it had more to do with Germany than Trump vs. Biden. There were multiple countries involved in the negotiation, and Putin thought he could only get the prison deal done now.

EARLY VOTING – Thoughts on Pennsylvania from Christopher Bouzy

“Now that we have early vote data, we can better understand what is happening on the ground in PA. In my opinion, early vote data is more reliable than polls… However, you must be careful because early vote data can sometimes be misleading.

“It is still early, and conditions on the ground may shift, but the current developments in Pennsylvania are eye-opening. As of today, 61.6% of absentee and mail-in ballot requests have come from Democrats, a significant figure that could indicate trends leading up to Election Day.

“Democrats aren't just leading in requested ballots; they are also leading in returned ballots by a whopping 72.8%. This may indicate higher enthusiasm among Democratic voters compared to Republicans. However, it is also possible that ballots from key counties are still in transit.

“But the situation for Republicans is even more dire. According to TargetSmart's race modeling data, Black voters represented just 8.8% of the Pennsylvania electorate in 2020. However, that percentage has surged dramatically, with Black voters now making up 19.5% of the vote.

“It is important to understand that while I am analyzing partisan voting patterns, the electorate doesn’t always vote along party lines. Not all Republicans will vote for Trump, and not all Democrats will vote for VP Harris. However, I estimate that Trump will lose 8-10% of Republican support in PA.”

In a recent NYT/Siena poll, 54% of those sampled were men – despite the fact that there are more women voters and they vote at higher rates than men. In fact, the NYT figure is the exact mirror image of the known Early Vote. So far, women account for a striking 54.4% of the vote!

The "not suckers or losers" Vote Vets bus was in Harrisburg yesterday. Held a press conference.

According to 538, Pa is even as of today. Conservative Bullfinch poll shows Harris leading Trump by four percentage points, 50% to 46%, with 4% of voters saying they would vote for someone else. The new Bullfinch poll is one of the best results for Harris in recent weeks, according to poll tracking by the New York Times; polls commissioned in early September by Spotlight PA and the Philadelphia Inquirer also showed Harris up by four or five points.

In the Pa Republican primary, Nikki Haley got 16%. 790,477 voted for Trump. 941,516 voted for Biden in the Democratic primary. Last day to register Oct. 21.

Voters younger than 30 make up about 1.59 million out of Pennsylvania’s 8.86 million voters, according to the registration data. About 45% are Democrats, 32% are Republicans and 23% are independent or unaffiliated voters. We have the capacity to register a lot more Democrats.

Really needed the dispatch today. I canvassed twice last weekend, but I admit I'm feeling more nervous than I've ever been. Apparently, I'm not alone?

Thanks. It's "Do more, worry less," but i think it's unhealthy to not admit we all worry from time to time. Don't forget our grandparents worried the Nazis might win, and their grandparents worried the Confederates would win. History is always inevitable in retrospect. :)

Expand full comment

I actually LOLed at that article. There is literally no intel in it, just quotes from 5 random people saying "I'm nervous because it's close," with the implication that we don't already know it's close and should therefore also be very, very nervous. What is "the panic button?" Is it on the same mythical console as the "flashing red lights" I am always hearing about? If I press the panic button is that when the "alarms go off" for the campaign, or should I wait until I see the "warning flares" appearing from my fellow Democrats? Last week Politico told me the Repubs were the ones "beginning to panic." I'm beginning to think this is a stressful line of work!

I just keep thinking of this meme: https://www.facebook.com/thepoliticalcomp/posts/were-so-back-politicalcompass-minecraft-gamers-politigram-ancaps-ancom-democrats/1635488356970897/ People like us who follow this stuff every day act like it's a roller coaster (famously stomach-churning) when in reality it's just one long cruise with a slight bend in the road toward the end. We pay attention to and feel the up and down of every bad or good poll, and yet the average doesn't really change. Now I'm supposed to feel concerned because the averages aren't changing. People are so expentant of the ups and downs that now they are anxious when we aren't getting them. I just have to laugh because the most logical explanation is simple: it has been 9 years now, and either you decided a while ago you are MAGA/anti-Democracy or anti-MAGA/pro-Democracy, those camps aren't changing, the same people who voted for Biden are the same people voting for Harris, some of them just didn't want Biden to run again so when the change-up occurred she vacuumed up everyone he had lost within a week or two. So, of course the convention or the debate or a big interview didn't move the needle any... 98% of people already decided the second the match was set to do the same thing they did four years ago and no good or bad performance will change anything, her better ground game will get the last few folks that ALWAYS wait until the last second, and Harris/Walz will end up pretty much the same as Biden/Harris (or Clinton/Kaine if she had just actually visited the Great Lakes). That is the most likely thing and we all know it.

P.S. The pollsters decided they would rather undercount Dems than overcount them this time. Again, we all know this. Again, the simplest explanation is usually the best one. "She isn't breaking away! Nothing we try is making that happen! Every swing state is still within a percent or two!" Well, yeah. They are swing states. By definition they are too close to call. That just means the polls are actually doing what they are supposed to be doing.

For the last 12 days, I've seen so many people and companies helping with Helene. All of us pulled together from our local Fire Departments working search and rescue to the trucking companies bringing trailer roads of supplies. It is common to see personal trucks hauling trailers full of water and packages. It is so good to see these red areas all working together to help one another. That is why it is so sickening to hear how Trump is trying to divide communities and spread misinformation. Glad the elected officials are speaking out against his lies about FEMA and immigrants. On Saturday, Sept. 28th, the Dawgs and Tide played in Tuscaloosa. Trump and MTGreene were at the game. MT Greene's district has the Blue Ridge Mtns in it. She was doing nothing to help or even care about the dangerous flooding taking place in the mountains.

MT Greene then tried to say the Democrats "control the weather." Again trying to make sure Dems and Repubs hate each other. Despicable people. I am so over these hateful people.

Thanks, as always, Simon, for this excellent update. I know others in this thread are nervous (hard not to be, when all common sense says Kamala should be ahead by 30 points), but I’m feeling better and more confident each day, because of the work the campaign is doing, work that people in groups like this are doing, and work that I’ve been doing. Finished all my letters and postcards to swing states, mailing all of them out over the past couple days. When we fight, we do win.

Thoroughly unscientific data: speaking to financial advisor. Male, end of baby boom. Works in finance. Unsolicited Volunteers to me that he will not renew lease on his Tesla because Musk’s trafficking in lies and fantasy are deeply troubling. Can’t imagine he’s not pulling the lever for Harris/Walz.

The Repub's open embrace of Musk is, hilariously, a perfect encapsulation of why they keep shooting themselves in the foot. The dude is incredibly unpopular. A Musk endorsement of anything at this point is radioactive to the general public. The maga line of thinking is so shallow that they see his enormous subscriber count on a website he literally owns and think "Great! He influences a lot of people! Jump in, dude!" while not bothering to realize that there is another side to that equation: everyone who DOESN'T subscribe to his ramblings is a larger count of people than those who do, and they will all run the other way. You are gaining a lot of people but suffering a net loss. It's the same with Joe Rogan or the Kardashians. Their fanbase being so big makes them unavoidable, but their unavoidability is obnoxious to everyone else. Cheeto drew a lot of disaffected new voters in, but his cartoonishly evil brand drew in EVEN MORE disaffected new voters in merely to vote against him.

I just can't get over how people pointed out Biden's low approval ratings every two seconds, and now that he's out of the picture we aren't hearing about approval ratings at all, only head-to-head matchups. Net approval ratings didn't stop mattering. Harris's has improved by DOUBLE DIGITS in a matter of weeks; she doesn't have majority approval but has a slim NET positive. The other guy still has a majority DISapproval rate, he's been underwater by double digits for a full decade. Hillary had been attacked for 25 years and had a majority disapproval in 2016 also, so she didn't get to 50% of votes... but she still beat him by 3 million in the raw total! People HATE this guy, they have never not hated this guy, more people think Kamala is likeable than don't. "I'm not sure about her but she seems like a nice lady" is more likely to get the vote of the last undecided person than the guy they have been saying no to for a decade. This isn't rocket science.
