Simon, the best juxtaposition of the Personal Economy/Overall economy message I have seen is this Jordan Klepper clip. I know there is no way for a campaign to make this message but I was surprised how effective it was.

Donated a small amount to all 6. I want us to win, win, win. Biden's speech last night was excellent. I still marvel at how he flew into Israel and back, then gave a speech on Thursday night. He is one strong and fit President.

This morning, I read Nashville Scene about the TN Senate race. Gloria Johnson trails but momentum is building and it would be dream come true to be without Marsha Blackburn as the Senator. The listed some donors which included Peter Frampton, Roseanne Cash and other musicians. Sadly, I misread (it was early) about Haslam. He and his brother Jimmy Haslam (owner of Cleveland Browns) gave an obscene amount of $28,500 to the odious Marsha Blackburn.

My last sentence is wrong. I apologize for stating Bill Haslam gave to Gloria Johnson. Sadly, he and his brother gave $28,400 to Blackburn. Gloria Johnson is getting smaller donations. This is from the TN Journal.

Dan Pfeiffer's piece on the Pew poll showing how dissatisfied with government many Americans are is part of the answer as to why Biden's ratings remain stubbornly low despite all the positive indicators. It must also be why there's polling today that young voters are interested in Trump -- they want someone to kick the can over! How do we speak to the loss of faith in government, and convince people that "things go better with Democrats in charge?"

Steven, one thing I am going to start writing about more is the difference between facts and reality and how people understand them or what is happening. They are not the same, and it's critical that we keep living in truth, facts and confirming that there is an objective reality out there even if voters don't connect with it or understand it. I live in facts, data, reality and its important in this time of untruth and deeply poisoned info environment we come to understand how collectively it important it is to maintain that there are things that are objectively true and not really open to bothsiderism or debate.

Steven, I think it's a combination of several factors. First, you have right-wing propaganda seeping into the mainstream media that the "economy is bad, inflation is out of control", etc. Even if people's personal finances are doing well, they're getting the message that overall things are bad. Second, I think the blurring of entertainment media and news media has a lot of people thinking that quick and easy solutions exist for complex problems and issues. That's why a lot of people think trump is some sort of business genius who will make everything wonderful right away. Third, because of general governmental lethargy and more right-wing media noise, not only is the "government" bad, the people who apply governmental power on behalf of the people are "bad" too. As Simon has mentioned, many people, perhaps too many, operate in the realm of feeling instead of facts and data. Our challenge is how do we effectively translate quantitative information into the world of emotionality and feelings. If we can accomplish that goal, we can go a long way in defeating the scourge of maga madness.

I think the juxtaposition of the polling is telling. The crux of the issue how we bridge the gap between why people feel so good about their own economic situation but are so negative about the overall economy. I think the view that personal finances are good is more of a broader impression. People’s bank accounts are filled and they’re willing to spend money with the feeling that they’ll be fine. But I think the negative reaction is a result of the shock they feel when they actually pay a bill. A dad might feel completely confident about his finances but still is pissed that he pays $100 to take his family out to dinner. At that immediate moment his overall confidence is replaced with the feeling that prices are too expensive. Yet he pays the bill he knows he can afford and takes the family for ice cream to spend more money. So the question is how do we mitigate that momentary shock at actually paying the bill and replace it with a more powerful feeling of how we well people are actually doing. Paying more for groceries elicits a visceral emotional reaction but the feeling that personal finances are fine is more a general feeling of wellbeing.

So Simon, I’m really looking forward to your thoughts on we can actually change bridge that gap. We need to raise the polling so people feel just as good about the overall economy as they do about their personal finances. I know you talk about loudly and proudly expressing the strength of the economy but it seems this emotional reaction to high prices is a tough nut to crack. What do you think?
