I will take any help we can get from anyone, including the worst Supreme Court since the Civil War! A broken clock is still right twice a day! Hooray, hooray, hooray! Amazing work to Marc Elias and his team!!!!!

With each passing week, I grow more and more frightened that Trump will have at least 2 Supreme Court picks before he's gone.

Thomas's avatar

Well they might have to get them done before November/January if that is going to be the case

BeeBeeinNYC's avatar

Think they won't try?

Thomas's avatar

Well they might.

But I don't think they will in that time (could be totally wrong).

Obviously if we fail to take the Senate, then i assume Thomas and Alito are getting replaced by two younger extremists in his last two years.

BeeBeeinNYC's avatar

Yeah, every time there's an alert on my computer from the WSJ/NYT with a headline that includes the word "Supreme," I am scared it's an Alito, Thomas, or Sotomayor retirement, health emergency, or death announcement.

Bravo, Simon:

“We have now changed our ActBlue default settings so that your contact information is only shared with a campaign if you give your affirmative permission. Many of you have asked for this and it is now our standard operating procedure.”

I’ll take the wins when we get them, thank you Marc Elias et al. On the darker side, the losses have consequences. Prof. Timothy Snyder posted a blow by blow account of how outright lies by JD Vance and literal Nazis (they are eating the dogs…..) about Haitian TPS recipients are now embedded in our legal system - https://snyder.substack.com/p/ethnic-cleansing-in-ohio-updated. It reads like a chapter from his works “Black Earth” and “Bloodlands.”

John Payne's avatar

Very good article. Professor Snyder does not pull his punches, nor should he. Vance will own the cruelty, disruption, and death that will follow the systematic deportation of Haitian immigrants in Springfield and elsewhere.

Stu Weiss's avatar

I eagerly await any new Tim Snyder article and interview. To watch a masterful historian, one who has tackled the darkest most depraved episodes of humanity, assess and interpret current events in context makes my love of history come alive. Especially in an age when society seems to have the attention span of a goldfish, gnat, you choose your species…

Thank you, Marc Elias! Phew!

I am making monthly contributions to the expansion fund, to Iowa, NC (via the state party) & Ohio, to Talarico, and to both House campaigns. Today, I will make contributions to Peltola & Turek. That's all I can swing right now.

Really sobering Substack today by Paul Krugman on the institutionalization of massive corruption. We cannot normalize this under any circumstances: https://paulkrugman.substack.com/p/corruption-for-make-benefit-glorious

Looking forward to the great HCR - keep going!

Hi Simon, Yay for a win! I donated to the Second Wave and my senate candidate Graham Platner today. Your analysis is always helpful! Looking forward to Maine's favorite historian, HCR, this afternoon!

The media here in Maine is continuing to post multiple free ads through positive articles, Op Eds and LTEs for Collins. It is clear the media and billionaires, along with Collins's team have a powerful effect on our voters and they have done serious damage to Platner. UGH!!!!

I follow Andy O'Brien, whose has a great deal of local knowledge about Collins and Platner, Maine and voting. Putting his substack here today.

Going to take the win with the Roberts' court today (I will never refer to this court as supreme again).

Onward friends. Crossing fingers for Peltola, Ossoff, Talarico and Brown if Maine once again keeps the despicable Faux moderate and truly extremist Susan Collins.

Next month I will add some more donations to the Senate races.

Thanks For all of you at Hopium. Happy Monday from the great state of Maine where we chose to sit out the "Great" 250th Fair. It closed yesterday due to weather, despite being 74 and slightly overcast in DC according to Weather.com. Yay for no attendance!

Fingers crossed for all my friends in Maine for a great outcome in November. Collins has more than had her day in Congress, and she's let the country down over and over again. Illinois boycotted the stupid Fair too, I'm proud to say.

Platner is certainly a problem we should not have to deal with. However, I like your idea of being the party of virtue. This needs to be turned around. We cannot let the narrative be lesser of two evils. First, I think the unfairness needs to be exploited. Why is Platner's tattoo an issue but not Hegseth's? Why is Platner's off color texting an issue but not Dementia J Trump's? And it is not just a "what about them" issue. The key is that Hegseth, Trump, and MAGA have not apologized or reformed. Platner has. I think it is virtuous to be human and make mistakes and then rise to the occasion. JFK was certainly no saint, yet I'd take him over MAGA any day.

Kent Boyer's avatar

David, I fully agree with you about redemption and second chances. He's not a "perfect" candidate, but he's the candidate our colleagues in Maine chose and we need to support him and the Dems in Maine.

Kent Boyer's avatar

Happy to donate a little again to the Iowa fund - I can't wait to see those seats turn blue. The MAGA Governor and Senators have decimated my birth state over the past decade. Grassley surely can't last another full term at 92 yoa, and Governor Sand will pick a great Democrat to replace him. Iowa can be a strong Democratic state again! Like the nation, there is much damage to reverse in my old state - so much damage caused by Reynolds and the lege. Looks like the next decade or more will be rebuilding both for Iowa and the nation.

Trumps Fair is even more pathetic than that tank squeaking down the street last year. Tens of people! Ice cream melting. Ferris wheel not working. A MAGA podcaster arrested for lewd behavior. God Almighty. The damage to our reputation globally is staggering. We have a ton of good work to do after we win in November.

Onward!

Simon, thank you for the good news, especially from Ohio! I've had a feeling for some time that we can win there and embarrass JD Vance. I'm working on postcards to Ohio voters today.

I called Congressman Raskin and Senators Alsobrooks and Van Hollen to say the oligarchs can pay for Trump's failed, illegal war and that Trump is wildly out of touch with reality, is a danger to us and the rest of the world, and must be removed from office as soon as possible.

Leu2500's avatar

"has good character" bwahaha! they haven't heard how Collin's affair with her now-husband broke up a family.

Jennifer Jones's avatar

Good charachter means doing the right thing when others are not looking. She does not do the right thing even when we are looking and then literally lies about her actions, the votes, the bills, the people, her stances. Her character is much more flawed than Platner's quite honestly, but she is packaged and marketed really really well. I am feeling pretty down about her chances of remaining in her seat. Hundreds of millions will buy you lots of things....

Jenny Ellsworth's avatar

“Yes to making American oligarchs pay for Trump’s failed Iran war - not every day Americans”

I am fully behind this, since the oligarchs are the ones who wanted the war, defended it, and profited by doing a lot of insider trading about it. The American public has already paid too much for it, and my stupid rep needs to hear about it.

But I haven’t had a chance to keep up with Hopium the last week or so (I was busy learning how to use PDI to set up GOTV efforts, among other things) and so I don’t know what our arguments are to push for this. Wars, at least when authorized, are paid out of taxpayer money. How do we justify taking billionaire money instead (which, like I said, sounds appropriate)?

Can someone fill me in or tell me which post(s) of Simon’s to go look at?

Catherine Giovannoni's avatar

My reading is that if Congress were to roll back the tax cuts they gave the oligarchs a year ago, that would put money in the Treasury to pay for Dept. of Defense expenditures, among others.

Jenny Ellsworth's avatar

Ah, simple and clear. Thanks!

Self report. I'm spending more time on local politics right now due to the recent vacancy in the Lt. Governor's position on the general ballot. Being an Information Warrior has been very important, since many Dems don't understand the process and others just want to provide misinformation and conflict. I am even sending corrections to radio stations that get it mostly right, but the errors are important to correct.

My approach is to first provide the direct citation to our State Statute for people to read. On Saturday I spoke up at our monthly DPBC meeting with the information and experience of having been through this a number of times before, explaining that it is the same process as when we elected Rep. Melanie Stansbury to represent NMCD-1 in Congress, replacing Deb Haaland when she was appointed Sec. of the Interior. I am responding to social media comments that I would normally ignore if they are on a TV or radio station's platform. This is my basic message, and I elaborate as needed.

As an elected member of DPNM State Central Committee, I will be casting my non-secret ballot to determine who will be our candidate for Lt. Governor on the general election ballot. The process for electing a candidate for the general election after the candidate who was elected in the primary election withdraws is stipulated in state law. Here's the link to the applicable State Statute, NM Stat § 1-8-8 (2025). Chapter 1 - Elections, Article 8 - Nominations and Primary Elections, Section 1-8-8 - Vacancy on general election ballot; occurring after primary. https://law.justia.com/codes/new-mexico/chapter-1/article-8/section-1-8-8/2025

Voting results will be released July 29, 2026.

Excellent! State and local work is so important and so overlooked and undervalued. I’ve volunteered for our state Rep over the past year. It’s so important to spread the Rep.’s initiatives to all citizens in the district.

You're an inspiration Deborah. I applaud your hard work. One of these days when I get settled here in Western Mass, perhaps I'll take some lessons from you in how to get involved in local politics. I lived in CO for 20 years so followed NM more or less. I always liked Michelle Luhan Grisham and Deb Haaland. I hope things go well for you guys now that everything is changing again.

Amazed (in a good way) about the mail-in ballots court decision today. It's absolutely the right result--just surprised the court reached it. Kudos to Marc Elias and his fantastic team of attorneys fighting for our democracy every day. And thanks, also, to E. Jean Carroll, who has endured SO much to try to get justice for herself and other victims of sexual abuse.

Donated to four of our Hopium funds today--Ohio, Iowa, Cooper and Talarico. Will sharpen my pencil and see if there is anything more I can do tomorrow--before the deadline.

As Lisa Iannucci would say, "Keep Going!"

Thanks for working so hard for the rest of us, Simon!!

Marc Elias and his team are hardworking heroes! While I am happy about Trump's three SCOTUS losses, I am dismayed by the case that he won. He now has the power to fire any official at will with the exception of the Federal Reserve. This is disastrous for our sinking democracy. We need to work even harder to win the midterms!
