Totally. I loved her genuine humility -- this isn't about me, it's about the movement. I also loved the Committee's emphasis on democracy as a foundation for peace.
The video is appalling; heartless, cruel and other unimaginable adjectives. It's horrifying. Even in the 60s in South Africa - this did not happen. Pam Bondi, Kristi Noem and all the other deplorables in the administration should be forced to watch this video repeat for over an hour --- just like CLOCKWORK ORANGE.
While we often have felt it took too long for Democrats in congress to mount a vigorous opposition to Trump, I am even more dismayed at how long it is taking Republicans to show any objection to what is happening to our country and our democracy. A few glimmers are beginning to show. May they soon burst into full glare.
Gary - at some point soon, one would think that the fear of losing their job would knock some sense into them and restore their backbones? I can't imagine how they think they are going to win competitive elections next year riding on Trump's coattails. Boggles the mind.
I think they may be playing around with the idea of dissolving Congress like Hitler dissolved Parliament. A lot of reasons why it won’t actually work but I think it may be an idea that’s floating around.
Mr. Boyer, the 3 GOP stooges who represent me (an Iowan) have been boggling my mind for years!
Their replies to my phone calls to their offices continue to be as staunchly pro-trump as ever: Tariffs are great! Democrats only love murderous illegals! President trump is bravely fighting crime!
My take on it is that after 10 years of focusing on their MAGA constituents, these members of Congress have completely lost all ability to recognize that humans beings can distinguish fact from fiction. Maybe Joni Ernst is doubting that the lies will keep working (hence her decision not to run again) but Grassley and Rep. Miller-Meeks just keep doubling down on Foxlandia tales.
I've puzzled over congressional Republicans' odd passivity as well. Wouldn't they want to exercise their prerogatives rather than appear--and act--as mere rubber stamps? Stuart Stevens, a longtime Republican operative who's now at Lincoln Square and therefore part of the resistance, thinks the problem precedes Trump: that Republicans forged a culture of obedience that Trump just exploited. https://open.substack.com/pub/lincolnsquare/p/what-trump-understood-about-the-republican?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email
Trump is tying his subsidy cut to the lie that this is being done to prevent illegals from getting insurance - the more we can disprove this in simple clear ways, the more his numbers will drop
Called Senators Durbin and Duckworth this morning. First, I thanked them for their fight - Durbin with his questioning of Bondi and his subsequent floor speech condemning her, and Duckworth on her several interviews on the Hegsworth/Trump clown show in front of our military leaders. Thanked them for their steadfast support of ACA subsidies, and added our four-point additions about the lawlessness, tariffs, science and health, and support for Ukraine. Thanks Simon and friends for the unflinching support.
Just Dancing is returning to Indiana for round 2 of Can You Gerrymander This? He will be greeted with a couch on the Capitol lawn and protesters. I thought the couch was a nice touch. So far, given we are suffocunder GOP here, the state house has been holding a firm no. I think they are feeling constituents pressure. Even with Brawn fir brains threat of money removed for projects, they did not cave. We shall see after the hate speech where their votes lie.
Democracy, not Trump, wins the Nobel Peace Prize! And so profoundly right that it should be the leader of the opposition in VENEZUELA, with whom Trump is trying to go to (Congressionally undeclared) war.
Thanks for this morning's videos. Heartbreak in Chicago. Absurdity in Portland. It's where we are but not where we have to stay.
Congresspersons call script anyone can riff off of:
- Thanks for continuing to hold the line on the shutdown! Keep it up!
- Release the Epstein files (obviously)
- Elissa Slotkin spoke on the Senate floor against the NSPM-7, which is about an attempt to eliminate freedom of speech and assembly by designating regular Americans as t*rrorists for organized political activity. Work w/ her on this issue. She is a former CIA agent so this is in her wheelhouse.
- Use the budget process to scale back the big ugly bill’s astronomical funding increase for ICE. ICE is masked secret police kidnapping people into unmarked vehicles. They kidnapped a US citizen here in Oregon just the other day, and held him fro hours before letting him go. They are on camera threatening to sicc a dog on him and telling him he was a “visa overstay” even though he was born in the US. This is going to keep happening. Astronomical funding increase for ICE is incredibly stupid. Use the budget process to protect us.
She is such an inspiration for all of us to stand with democracy. Thank you for sharing this interview.
Yes! The phone call made me tear up, because it was so inspiring.
Same! My family WhatsApp group exploded this morning when my Venezuelan cousins heard the news. There was great rejoicing.

Democracy has a big fat Texas problem.
Indiana too!
Congratulations to Nobel Laureate Marina Corina Machado !!! such humility and courage!!!
Wow! That was such a repudiation of dt from the Nobel Peace Prize Committee!!
Hope it stings.
I can’t imagine he was even in the running, in the same way I am not going to win any weightlifting medals.
Just watch the short from Jess Craven: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/BQTXqg451GE!
SUCH GOOD NEWS! Congratulations to Marina Corina Machado as champion of democracy for all oppressed peoples of the world

Yep. I think this must be correct. Cite to Steven Miller uttering “plenary” on CNN by mistake.

Same thing happening in Ohio. 🤢🤮

Amen Simon - we can include support for Pritzker and our other fighters as part of October 18th protests as well!

Hi Simon! Is this on now or at NOON? I'm done teaching at noon and was going to jump on.
Thanks,
Claire
Hi Claire, it's at Noon ET. Link here: https://open.substack.com/live-stream/67474?utm_source=post-publish
Thank you!
Donald Trump wants spectacle, but what we're getting instead is the theater of the absurd.

Awesome. I'm using it! Thank you.
Hopefully, someday, a leader of the American resistance will win the Nobel Peace Prize.
