We need to drill into everyone the message that Trump’s withdrawal from economic integration with Europe, with our neighbors Canada and Mexico, is not a “foreign policy” problem that can be ignored. It IS a major economic issue, as this conversation so clearly describes. One that dwarfs the cost of gas, groceries or even health insurance. Foreign holders of US Treasury securities, of US corporate debt, of US stocks can eviscerate our economy if they lose faith in the full faith and credit of US bonds or the dollar or dollar-denominated securities. Our banks, hedge funds, pension funds, people’s 401k’s could get wiped out. Jobs would evaporate as people pull back spending and companies collapse.
Yes, this is an extreme scenario. But we’ve been here before- 1929, through the ‘30’s.
This is the ultimate affordability issue. We need to make everyone understand this.
