What to make of the Dean Phillips ad we’re seeing here in Mass decrying rising prices and mortgage rates that “Biden isn’t talking about.” Is Phillips on the NH Primary ballot as a Dem candidate for Pres.??

It's a vanity campaign, these primary attempts happen often, it's just rare that someone as prominent as a congressman would do one.

Expand full comment

True, but this one is especially stupid because he’s focusing his effort in a contest where he can’t even be awarded any delegates even if he won 100% of the votes

That's my point, this sort of thing happens, but it's always crackpots like Marianne Williamson, not someone who currently holds an actual political office.

Yes, but it’s meaningless. The first contest where any delegates will be awarded in the D primaries is SC the first week of February, but two people on “attention whore” missions (Dean Philips & Marianne Williamson) are pretending that NH is a real primary for us and campaigning/ debating there even though I don’t think President Biden even filed to be on the ballot. Undoubtedly someone in the media will try to make a story out of it, but don’t be fooled....our nominating process starts in February with the South Carolina primary, and President Biden will win it by a mile and quickly put these shenanigans to rest so we can focus on the real task at hand

It's the New Year and thanks for all that you do, Simon. We all know 2024 is going to be difficult. Here's to taking John Lewis's message to heart. Let's Fight the Good Fight. "Fight the Good Fight - 2024"

Hi, Simon! I'd love it if sometime soon you could do a presentation on immigration. It's the one fall-back that the MAGAs here in the Shenandoah Valley go to when all else fails for them. I don't think I know enough to counter them. Last summer, it sounded like things at the border had calmed down, but now it seems as if there's a problem again? Local MAGAs swear that immigrants are being housed in luxury hotels and fed at taxpayer expense, that Americans can't get seats on airplanes because they're being used to transport immigrants, that immigrants are bringing fentanyl over our "open borders," etc. I'd like to feel more confident countering this stuff. Thank you!

What a great suggestion. I’d be very interested in learning more about immigration. The MAGA bs is totally bogus.

This morning I googled “Joe Biden” and not one article with a neutral or favorable view towards him appeared. The mainstream media is complicit in pushing an anti-Biden narrative, and we need a much more forceful and powerful pushback against them.

Most of them have turned to focusing on his bad poll numbers with minorities and youth, along with polls showing him getting "trounced" by trump. There is little actual analysis to them; they will blame high prices and Gaza. This morning Brian Lehrer had a guy on WNYC ( Simon ought to get on this show, Lehrer is a fair host ) who said that Biden is actually ok with mainstream voters; he is losing support with youth and Black working class voters, and not because they will vote for trump, just that they aren't "feeling it" for Biden. He noted that Biden's WH thinks when the time comes to pick a side, they will come home. The guest, whose name I didn't catch, thought that was too risky.

Why won’t they publish good stuff? That really frosts me.

No surprise the president's quoting you, Simon--your optimistic message is incredibly powerful. I can't count the number of conversations I've had recently that began, "But Simon Rosenberg says..." With your help, we can counter the doom/gloom narrative and keep building on our positive momentum.

I am "stealing" one of the bullet points from Postcards to Voters campaign for Tom Suozzi:

I have "made a RESOLUTION to be part of the SOLUTION" in 2024.

I know I am preaching to the choir here at Hopium, but I am also going to try and do more in 2024 to spread the word amongst my friends and neighbors that we can't just sit on the sidelines waiting until we can vote in the primaries and then the general election in November.

I also wanted to share an interesting post from Laura Brill from the Civics Center pushing back on the widely-held notion that young voter's are apathetic.

https://thecivicscenter.substack.com/p/its-not-apathy-its-youth-voter-suppression?utm_source=post-email-title&publication_id=1605804&post_id=140180540&utm_campaign=email-post-title&isFreemail=true&r=1aiy5t&utm_medium=email

The Civic Center also has a useful map showing each states rules on preregistering young people to vote: https://www.thecivicscenter.org/map.

Now that it has rolled over to an election year, if you live in a state that allows pre-registration, please let any young people you know who might be eligible know about it. In many of these states, anyone who turns 18 by election day can vote in the primary even if they are only 17. we need to generate some buzz early in the year to give word of mouth time to spread the message!

You can also write to your MOC and tell them to please pass the Youth Voting Rights Act. For is included in the link https://secure.everyaction.com/EfvU6LQs10GH3tHaYanBPA2

Simon, what is your sense of how the governing party of this year plays out? Do you think the the White House & Dem Senate have enough leverage to out maneuver the House and get some minimal form of our basic necessities passed, or do you think we’re just kind of fucked and the best we can do is let them create a disaster but but win the politics of it? I’m kind of stunned by what I’m seeing and I am rarely surprised by Republican nihilism anymore

Mailed a batch of postcards for NY-3 this morning and plan to do another this week. Maybe textbank for the FL race too. I’ve never been this motivated in January and I hope all of you are as well.

Simon how much do you think the dysfunction of state level GOP parties will matter this year? Will it affect turnout? We have Ben Wickler and Anderson Clayton and they have ???

Here’s a dynamic that should be broadly known in the coming months: when Democrats are in control, Republican legislators would rather kneecap them than serve with improving the lives of their constituencies in mind. Then when Republicans are in control, it’s still not the villages in their districts that matter, it’s the pillaging of budgetary allocations and cutting taxes that mean anything to them.

Simply put, it’s like this:

Vote blue for your children’s children

Vote Republican for your boss’s boss

Thanks, Simon! I agree that it’s pretty remarkable how effectively Joe Biden has delivered on his promise to get us to the other side of a world health crisis. Joe Biden is the most accomplished president I know of and amid one of the most challenging times of American history.

Quick question: would you consider going on TYT (The Young Turks)? The are a progressive show the is confusingly incredibly anti-Biden and I’m not sure why. Cenk is convinced Joe Biden will lose, but like you I feel that is contrary to evidence if we do the hard work. He is willing to admit Biden does good, so I’d be interested to see how a Simon Rosenberg interview would look.

Regardless, thanks so much for sticking with the hard, hopeful, achievable work of getting our good president re-elected.
