Why is he not calling out the national guard?

Veronica's avatar

I don't know, but that's what I'm hoping he'll do.

Sheila B (MN)'s avatar

I suspect because that would mean we are actually fighting a civil war against our own government. That’s why Trump wants more ICE here- so he has reason to activate the National Guard - not to defend us but to brutalize us even more and give Trump an excuse to declare martial law here. And then cancel the Midterm elections. Extreme? Yeah.

I believe Walz has put in a call to our Nat’l guard to be ready. So Trump cannot activate to move against us because they have already been called up.

Anne Bear's avatar

Yeah, I don't really understand why people keep asking this. Because that's civil war, that's why.

Catherine Giovannoni's avatar

I think because Trump is desperate for an excuse to use the Insurrection Act and he doesn't want to give him an excuse.

The Minnesota National Guard are on stand-by--they are mobilized but not deployed as yet.

There was another shooting tonight I hear.

Simon Rosenberg's avatar

There was another shooting in Minneapolis.

Emmy Nelson's avatar

Thank you Simon. We are heartbroken and furious here in Minnesota. It's clear the ICE people are deliberately trying to incite violence. They are also making it difficult for the local law enforcement to do their jobs. We will care for our neighbors and document the unlawful behavior of ICE.

Godspeed Emmy. Sending love to you and your family - Simon

Sending ((((hugs)))) to you here from Texas. ❤️❤️❤️

they gassed a baby tonight.

Veronica's avatar

Oh, my God. . . They didn't? 😢

Anne Bear's avatar

yeah, a dad was trying to get his six kids out of the neighborhood and they gassed the whole car. all the kids are in the hospital.

Veronica's avatar

Oh, my God. . .

I smell a civil suit. Like yesterday.

We can see it from here in New England too. If there is ANY immigration enforcement happening at all it will be ancillary to the mission now. This is a terror campaign.

The agent that asked the women following and filming them, "Listen, have you not learned from the past couple of days? Have you not learned?" said the quiet part out loud. We as a nation are suppose to "learn" with Miller's getsapo using Minneapolis's an example of what will befall all of us if we don't stay quiet and compliant. This is a rapist saying to their victim, "It will go easier if you stay quiet." Hell, trump has probably said that a time or two himself. Fuck that.

Stay strong. We see you.

You're right, but the good news is it's not going to work. It's going to be extremely sad and painful, but people aren't going to give in to this insanity. We know that now and we must continue to speak out and encourage all those in our lives who don't pay attention and/or don't feel as if they are (or will be) affected by this that they have a choice. They can resist the feds trampling the Constitution now or it can become normalized. Which one do they want?

Hari Kanta's avatar

Emmy, I'm so sorry that you and other Minnesotans are being subjected to this treatment. Hugs and support from New Jersey. We see you, we feel you, we are with you.

Veronica's avatar

Yes. As a Texan, I thank Gov. Walz for being just the governor the state of Minnesota needs. And I will continue to stand by Minnesotans. ❤️❤️

Is there a transcript of this address/video available yet?

Simon Rosenberg's avatar

I will send it tomorrow.

Thank you! Have you been in touch with Jim DeMay? He's currently on a local school board and running to flip MN House district 36A. I was thinking about him while you read the Gettysburg Address tonight, as our carload of NH field staff ran into you at the PA battlefield on July 3 (the battle anniversary) in 1993. I might have a photo of you.

Love Gov Walz! Such a decent, kind man of incredible integrity and dedication to Minnesota and our country. Thank you for sharing this video, Simon. We are living in terrifying times, we must all stay strong, we are truly being tested as never before…

Jan Brown's avatar

Extremely important that he did this. He is doing a great job under dangerous and unconstitutional circumstances. I wish he would get back in the race for reelection for Gov. He is a great leader.

John Payne's avatar

Thanks for sharing that. Gov. Walz spoke from the heart but strongly and on point. Nonviolent protest, witnessing, and, the part that really resonated -- banking evidence for future prosecution. This will end, and there will be a (legal, political, societal) reckoning.

JCOK's avatar

Great address. Wonderful job. Hopefully Congress takes note and limits or defunds ICE as part of the appropriations bill. Dems need to hold strong. This is a moment for true opposition.

Thanks for sharing.

Veronica's avatar

We have to keep calling. In my calls today, I demanded no more funding for ICE.

virginia arthur's avatar

Thank you, Simon, for posting the video of Governor Walz addressing the people of Minnesota. What a great leader! I hope that citizens everywhere film ICE when they are committing crimes. They are nothing but a bunch of thugs. Yes, we must bank as as much evidence as we can against them for future investigations and prosecution.

It’s been a brutal week to live through here - so much deliberate violence - against women, children, young, old, Native people and people of color. Everyone. Including a Lutheran pastor who stepped in front of an ICE agent who was chasing a young girl. And was violently assaulted, detained, and denied bathroom privileges or water or good - for 12 hours.

I’m doing what I can like everyone I know - joined a mutual aid group where i live, and have delivered food and donated to families items like diapers. Helps even if it seems small - and calling my Rep -and Senators pleading with them to be loud and bold.

Thanks for posting the Governor’s video, Simon. I appreciate you helping spread the world. To all your readers, call your GOP reps please folks. Two more people were shot tonight in North Mpls (injured but alive) by ICE. It’s becoming a tinderbox. And the Governor is absolutely correct that violence is exactly what Trump wants. We have to find a way to hold the line.

John Payne's avatar

It doesn't seem small to me, not when people are afraid to go to the stores. Thank you for what you are doing and I am so, so sorry your wonderful state is dealing with this right now. I have all Dem members of Congress here in CA, but am calling them daily focused solely on ICE violence and chaos in Minneapolis.

Elizabeth T.'s avatar

My Democratic congresswoman signed on to call for Noem's impeachment. Let's keep up the pressure!

Anne Bear's avatar

that's fantastic, Sheila! It's not small at all, especially to the people you're helping.

During the early days of COVID, when we really didn't know what we were dealing with, you'd be walking to the grocery store here in NYC and an elderly couple would be in their car, or outside the store with their cart and they would ask people who were visibly younger than they were, to please do their shopping for them so they wouldn't have to risk entering the store because they were scared.

They had cash in hand.

I don't know of anyone who didn't agree to do this. As I recall a few people wouldn't even accept money from the seniors.

It was wonderful.

BeeBeeinNYC's avatar

Sheila, is there a community resource that you can identify where our contributions would be put to reliable, good use? Those of us outside the state may not know of these smaller nonprofits.

Sheila B (MN)'s avatar

Correction to my comment above - only one person was shot. He was with another person, both were allegedly attacking ICE agents with snow shovels and shots were fired. Only one person was wounded.

Patrick's avatar

Very powerful. Thanks for sending so late in the evening.

Thank you for sharing this. Love and solidarity from Chicago to Minnesota. There will, there must be a reckoning.

It’s a horrible situation created by a sadistic, demented madman. If the Gov. calls out the National Guard, trump likely would call that rebellion and would call in the U.S. Army or Marines. Would those troops shoot Minnesotans? A very dangerous and deadly situation. Trump would order bombing of Minneapolis, if he were given the slightest excuse. So, it’s a poker game with an evil ignoramous with American lives as the chips. A friend just mentioned that trump/miller are just looking for a chance to impose martial law, and I agree. At some point, people may simply become fed up and act, which might explode the situation. This is typical trump bullying. One last thought: ICE is composed of some of America’s worst, and they are incompetent. Minnesotans may find a way to run rings around them. We must support Minnesota for all we’re worth. They are the first but likely won’t be the last.

Apparently, Maine, said to have a "large" Somali population, is next.

Madam Geoffrin's avatar

Maine does have a large Somali population, and from prior reporting, they have revitalized Lewiston, Maine.

Faith Wilson's avatar

Hell at this rate, trump could order to bomb Minneapolis and Republicans in the Senate would have their usual 50-51 vote like what happened with Venezuela yesterday.

MLRGRMI's avatar

God Bless Tim Walz! Damn that man is awesome!

Veronica's avatar

He would have made a wonderful Vice-President, that's for sure.

Thank you, Simon, for sharing Gov. Walz's address. Things here in MN are tense and terrifying but we are trying to have courage and to care for our neighbors.
