Just saw the news that Wisconsinโ€™s hyper-gerrymandered maps have been struck down and new maps MUST be drawn in time for the 2024 election!!!! We helped do that peeps.....pat yourselves on the back because this is hands down one of the most consequential actions taken as a result of the D grass roots hard work to win elections all the way up and down the ballot and it will ๐Ÿ’ฏ percent have national implications. SO. FUCKING. PROUD!!!!!!!!!!! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Yes, many members of the Hopium community worked very hard in Wisconsin in the spring. Was a big early 2023 win for us, and helped set the tone for what has been a very good year for the Democratic Party. Congrats everyone! More good news to end the year with.

Hi Simon, a quick quibble from a big fan and Hopium subscriber:

Describing Trump's attack on E. Jean Carroll as attempted rape isn't accurate. The judge said it WAS what most people would call rape, just digital rather than penile.

The following from AP explains it:

"The judge said the NY Penal Code requires vaginal penetration by a penis, while forcible penetration without consent of the vagina or other bodily orifices by fingers or anything else is labeled โ€œsexual abuseโ€ rather than โ€œrape.โ€

He said the [NY] definition of rape was โ€œfar narrowerโ€ than how rape is defined in common modern parlance, in some dictionaries, in some federal and state criminal statutes and elsewhere.

The judge said the verdict did not mean that Carroll โ€œfailed to prove that Mr. Trump โ€˜rapedโ€™ her as many people commonly understand the word โ€˜rape.โ€™ Indeed ... the jury found that Mr. Trump in fact did exactly that.โ€

David Pepper with more good news on local candidate recruitment - this time in Ohio, where all state Senate seats will be contested. Expanding the playing field means more chances to win, more Dems getting active and engaged, future leaders being built - all good! : https://open.substack.com/pub/davidpepper/p/update-great-recruiting-news-in-ohio?r=f5mz&utm_medium=ios&utm_campaign=post

Love the positive positive highlights - it lifts our spirits and is a good antidote to despondency - really helpful these days! I am always struggling to share economic news as simply and authentically as I can. FWIW. My latest attempt at distilling todayโ€™s excellent inflation news - โ€œWith prices coming down and paychecks going up not only do people have more money in their pockets but they are keeping more of it - that is really encouraging!โ€

I love your declarative sentences and the occasional, but weโ€™ll-placed f-bombs. Sorry my pics of President Bidenโ€™s Bipartisan Infrastructure Project here in Missoula Montana didnโ€™t make it through email. Wishing you and your family happy, restorative holidays and hereโ€™s to a triumphant year for democracy!
