I worry because GenZers didn't seem to turn out to vote against DeSantis in '22. I know that Crist wasn't terribly exciting, but it's about fighting against fascism and for the future.
I worry about Americans' strange complacency. The 11th hour is already here.
Hw, GenZers may not have turned out to vote in Nov but the tide has turned.Even law FL enforcement is upset that DeSantis banned the use of certain drones and hampered their ability to keep us safe. For every (mis)step he takes he will lose votes. Trying to keep the faith in my red FL county!
I was on a Zoom with Seniors Taking Action yesterday morning and their guest was from Emily's List and she mentioned important upcoming mayoral races including Donna Deegan's race so I sent a few emails around to see if we might be able to write Postcards To Voters for her and host her on one of our Markers For Democracy/Downtown Nasty Women Social Group/Team Min Zooms.
Thank you Ellen. This is currently a GOP held seat so taking it away from DeSantis will be a huge blow to him. Emily's List is all in here, and the DNC is jumping in too. Hope grassroots groups across the US can host her and help. Largest city in Florida, is how the road back there begins.
You find this a "deeply negative statement"? What's negative Simon? This is the first time you're ever answered any of my questions or comments. I find that deeply negative.
I merely pointed out the facts
of what happened in WI.
And @Janet, I am well aware
of DeSantis being a Fascist
and the extreme damage he's doing, not just in FL, but
also in other states. I I've in
Arkansas and Sanders is following his playbook closely. I think and feel if you're going to start asking
to invest a lot of money, hours, heart and guts in this
Victoria, these comments are inconsistent with the positive, constructive tone we are trying to establish here. If you don't voluntarily remove or edit them, I will take them down. Not quibbling with your insights but with your tone and sentiment, which as you know is a big part of my analysis of what is happening and wrong in US politics today. It has no place here.
Have you thought about putting out some commenting guidelines so people know what is expected? I value that you are doing something new with comments, but since there are different commenting experiences on the internet, people might not automatically understand what you have in mind and may violate unintentionally.
I’m a Wisconsinite, and yes Dist. 8 is heavily gerrymandered. Republicans won the district by 8% during the last election. They won by 1.8% this time. As for impeaching Janet- unlikely. It would be bad political strategy, to say the least. If impeached, or liberal Democratic Governor gets to appoint her replacement. If they tried to impeach him first, then Janet, the backlash from over one million voters would be huge. It would ignite a series of protest on our state capital that would maker the 2010 Act10 protests mild in comparison. And those protests were huge. And repeated over weeks.
Of course, Florida has their own Democratic Gen Z in the US House, Maxwell Alejandro Frost. Please follow, support, and amplify him on social media. He is great.
I’m currently writing postcards for Activate America for 2024 Congressional races. They use scripts that resonate with voters based on polling. Does Postcards To Voters have any sample scripts? I don’t want to assume what motivates me here in CA will do the same in Jacksonville, particularly in a mayoral race. I am certainly happy to write some!
I'd like recommend a daily Substack newsletter "Chop Wood, Carry Water"...filled with tons of different ways to support candidates, turnout voters, resist the relentless GOP overreach. Here is today's newsletter. Please consider signing up and taking action.
She's amazing! People love to talk about politics, but it's really hard to get them to DO anything. Even effortless things, like sharing a post to spread the word about something important, or leaving a voicemail for your senator. I find it heartbreakingly, hair-tearingly, teeth-gnashingly frustrating. But Jessica manages to do it.
I am a scientist. I am used to criticism from my fellows. Done in respect it is constructive. You make better forward progress when you analyze what worked and what didn't to improve future results. I am sorry to see a negative reaction to Victoria Brown's comments about the Wisconsin state senate
election. We do need to pay attention to all elections these days, and asking what happened there is
to my mind perfectly appropriate for any effective and HOPEFUL future strategy. It may be that this
was a badly gerrymandered district that might not have been affected enough by more democratic
funds. And if so, what strategies might have helped?
I made a pathetically small donation and have encouraged friends on social media to donate. I've written some postcards to Jacksonville with PTV, and I'd be happy to volunteer to send texts or phonebank from home (Maryland).
Simon, this is exactly what I was looking for, and I have chimed in on Ellen's request to Postcards to Voters.
I am working on getting our small but mighty powerhouse, Evanston Indivisible, to follow you. We have written hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of postcards (actually, probably a few million by now) to get out the vote in the last several cycles; to name just one category of activism in which we have participated, since 2017.
It's not my place to sign Evanston indivisible up with you for a zoom visit but I will reach out to leadership to strongly suggest it. Because we have been such a powerhouse, other local Indivisible groups have merged with us..
Thank you, thank you thank you for your work. Just about every bit of it resonates with me and your work is very complementary to my avid reading and live Facebook Zoom chat participation with Heather Cox Richardson and others.
The old psychologist in me resonates intensely with your forging ahead via a positive vision, based in facts and possibility. It never helps to stick ones head in the sand…
That's what I've been saying for years and it's what you are saying in my understanding - to not be hypnotized by the shiny objects dangled in our faces all the time, and thereby miss the bigger picture, is powerful in more spheres than just politics.
My wife's name is Donna, so, you know, I kinda HAD to donate! But above that, she seems to be what We The People need, to fight back against the backward-looking neanderthals corrupting our governments around the country. Good luck, Donna; we got this!
Hey Simon, the only phonebank I can find for Donna Deegan (via Mobilize) uses OpenVPB, where you use your own phone number. I have learned from experience that it's not very effective trying to call voters in another state with my Maryland phone number on display. I could not find any text banks for her.
For out-of-state supporters, that leaves donating. Which is fine, though candidates often like to complain about their opponents' donations coming from out of state. Also, there are a lot of retirees and others who can't make big donations but do have time to volunteer, so it might be a good idea for Democratic candidates to use that resource.
I'll keep writing #PostcardsToVoters in Jacksonville.
Working on letters today with https://www.voteriders.org/. Campaigns aren’t candidate specific although they have a Fl campaign and I got Jax addresses. Vote Riders also does texting. ID info is critical with changes in legislation !
Ask Postcards To Voters to start a postcard campaign
I did that 5 minutes ago! 🙌Postcardstovoters.org does have addresses for Duval County/Jacksonville registered Dems for their vote by mail program.
I asked last night. Sounds like it is in the works.
Thank you, Ellen! I will ask, too. Joan, Evanston.
Campaigns have to ask PTV to write for them, we cannot do that. They have to hear from the candidate or their organization.
How do get the attention of GenZ for this race? I read somewhere that Florida has the largest number of GenZers in the country.
Perhaps you can interview some of the Voters for Tomorrow GenZers about their plans to mobilize for this race?
Victor Shi could host her on iGen Politics to get the word out to Gen Z.
LOVE this idea. Victor Shi & Voters of Tomorrow are awesome!
Jacksonville Young Democrats. Students are fired up since DeSantis banned TikTok from
university WiFi networks.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but is the Florida Democrat Party
involved in this campaign at all?
After the very apparent dropping
the ball in District 8/Wisconsin and leaving the newly elected judge in jeopardy; 42 million dollars and mega hours spent,
I honestly feel more caution had
better be taken in closing the
back doors and protecting this
candidate. DeSantis isn't going to
take kindly to infringement into
his territory.
Love this. Thank you.
The deeply negative sentiment here is inconsistent with what we are doing here at Hopium.

If we had taken that senate
seat, the Judge would be
a lot safer than she is now.
If you find that deeply negative, you are not the
man you're professed to be.

Americans are accustomed to instantaneous satisfaction, push-button solutions.
The reality is that movements are accomplished by many people working relentlessly towards the same goal.
There's always time to retweet, make calls, send texts, participate in protests, vote and support GenZ to vote (or run for office).
No one is in charge...no one is going to save us. It's up to all of us to be relentless in pushing for a better society.

Glad you are here with us Joan, and thanks for what you do. Best, S
Thanks for the heads up about this race. Just donated.
I live in Florida donated $55 with tip...thanking you!
Lots of posting going on. It's good to learn from each other
