More Bad Polling for DeSantis, 2 Events This Week, Spain's Right Comes Up Short, Focus Now on OH, VA and FL
David Pepper Joins Us Thursday to Talk Ohio/Good VA Event Today
Happy Monday all!
Dems are having a good summer, Biden has gained a bit of ground in the Presidential, the Rs bad summer is about to get a lot worse, the July With Dems has dropped, the good people of Ohio need our help and support, and we have two Hopium events this week (recording will be available for those who can’t make it live):
Tuesday, July 25th 8pm EST - My Monthly Political Briefing and Discussion - RSVP - I usually open with 15-20 minutes of an overview of the current national political landscape and then take your questions for the rest of the hour. Lots to talk about! Look forward to catching up with folks.
Thursday, July 27th 1pm EST - David Pepper Joins Us to Talk Vote No in Ohio, His New Book, Saving Democracy - RSVP and learn more. Going to be a good one!
Focus Now on Ohio, Virginia and the Florida Ballot Initiative - Earlier this year the Hopium community went to work and helped secure our big wins in Wisconsin and Jacksonville, Florida. Now I am encouraging all of us to dive into three more critical efforts:
the Ohio Vote No campaign and November ballot initiative
the Virginia legislative elections this fall
the Florida ballot initiative repealing DeSantis’s six-week abortion ban
There are many ways to get involved in these important efforts, and folks should feel free to offer links in the comment section about ways they’ve gotten involved. But a few initial suggestions:
To get involved in Ohio (donating, calls/texts, postcards) review this great post from David Pepper and come hear from him directly this week here at Hopium. The special election is August 8th so try to sign up for an action this week.
To get involved in the early signature-gathering process in Florida sign up with the Florida Women’s Freedom Coalition, and watch this video of its Executive Director Anna Hochkammer talking about this important work.
To get involved in the Virginia legislative elections (yes Virginia has elections every year!) sign up with my good friends at Network NOVA, and learn more by RSVPing for this great event tonight:
I know many of you are already very involved in all these efforts, and just want say a big thank you to all of you. We know this work makes a difference, and I hope those of you not yet involved will dive into one of these important projects in the coming days.
More Bad Polling For DeSantis - For months the DeSantis campaign has been telling us that he would win Iowa and use that mo’ to catch Trump in the other early states. Well, Fox Business dropped new polls from IA and SC this weekend, and they are really bad news for the flailing DeSantis campaign:
Iowa Trump: 46 DeSantis: 16 Scott: 11
South Carolina: Trump: 48 Haley: 14 DeSantis: 13 Scott: 10
In another poll we follow here, the daily Civiqs track, DeSantis has dropped from -a really awful -20 Fav/Unfav to a truly awful -23 in the last few weeks. Great to see this malevolent extremist in free fall.
Spanish Right Falters - In a consequential European election yesterday, the Spanish right, leading in pre-election polls, failed to get enough seats to form a new government, and the far-right Vox party unexpectantly lost seats. Via the Guardian, here is what current Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez said last night, and a reminder that the right failing anywhere is good news for everyone everywhere:
Keep working hard all. We are having a good summer, and need to celebrate the wins when they come - Simon
My biggest fear is that Trump gets convicted before the republican 2024 convention, giving the GOP establishment to hand select their candidate & the go with a low-key popular, but still extremely racist, misogynist, and vile as trump & DeSantis.... Glen youngkin. We need to start getting the word out about his extremism as well.
I'm writing 10 postcards for the Ohio "Vote No" campaign.
