Moving and vivid recounting, Simon. Thank you. And yes, I too am seeing the applicability to our present moment of many of the quotes. Fighting for and preserving and in some cases reclaiming human rights and freedoms are struggles that span generations.
Thank you Simon! Between your beautiful pictures and “the prominence and power of words”, I found encouragement- and that, my friend, is very much needed these days.
Here an excellent link to explain and show the pro choice situation in the state of R majority Ohio. If you have time consider reaching out to phone bank/txt or post cards for their Aug8 and Nov ballot efforts. Let’s help them secure pro choice! Thanks team!
What, no selfie with your partner? Thanks for posting your pics from the walking tour. I wish the GOP had taken the tour with you. Maybe they would have learned something.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. I have yet to be able to get to DC, so seeing through your lens is very much appreciated. Simon, thank you for all that you do to keep us informed about what is going on in this great nation and a way to address it without falling into their trap and their narrative. I try to remember this quote everyday.
“Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”
Thanks for touting FDR, my very favorite great President. Sad that the GOP finds it so necessary to denigrate his legacy from which all Americans, and democracy, have benefitted.
Great essay. I remember the first time I was in DC and how moving it was to be there. When we moved to live there for five years I still felt the history and loved walking through the Mall, the monuments and even walking home and passing by the Capitol.
My parents tell me that, on my first trip to the Lincoln Memorial - I was about 4 years old - I fell to my knees because I thought I was looking at God. Lincoln remains perhaps my greatest hero.

This was just what I needed today, thank you.

The photos and "the walk" are great. It is important to remember people who "stepped out of themselves" for the good of others.
