There are some terrific videos of fellow veterans striking back at Vance and the Trump Campaign. The lies in their swiftboating efforts are so obvious and so pathetic! This is boomeranging back – and I think it will really hurt Trump’s support amongst veterans and in the military community.

Meanwhile, the Trump Campaign keeps putting Donald’s Electile Dysfunction on full public display.

Thanks so much for the Hopium Winning the House Thursday events! So great to be getting work done in community. And a treat to meet the wonderful House candidates too!

I agree Janet! Hopefully some of the hiccups will be resolved next time.

But everybody, please do your part to be prepared if you are a postcarder:

* Make sure you have your supplies - you have to purchase your own post cards - either purchased or homemade. Markers for Democracy has some great choices, but it might be quicker to get some from Amazon or Etsy - use "postcards to Voters" in the search box for a multitude of choices (I should know, I have way too many postcards in lots of different designs!!)

* The campaign provides the script, so if you are afraid of running out of room with a 3- 4 sentence script, you can (1) choose postcards with a full-back for writing your message. (If the front of the card doesn't have room for the address, then you only get half of the back for the message) and/or (2) choose fine tip pens or ultra-fine tip markers so that it is easier to write smaller but still be legible!

* Once you have registered for the Zoom and chosen Postcarding for your breakout room, be on the lookout for an email from WinningTheHouse Postcards. My email for this week showed a title of "Addresses for Kirsten Engel (AZ CD-6)". (Also be sure and check your spam folder!!) For reference, I registered Wed mid-morning and got my addresses by late afternoon the same day.

Cheryl, thank you so much for these super-helpful tips!!

It must be way more fun to write these articles over the last 18 days. The shift in energy is unlike anything I’ve experience in politics.

It’s so much easier to talk to people (especially those who don’t follow politics closely) about the election now. No longer does each conversation start immediately on defense.

We get to start with the optimism and, yes, the Joy. We get to go on the attack and we get to go help the Harris campaign win this thing

And the impact on down-ballot races is a big deal. The only way to overcome minority rule is to fix the Senate filibuster… so the Senate races are huge. And the enthusiasm and excitement swirling around the top of the ticket can make a difference.

I’m tethered to Texas: Obama lost Texas by double digits in 2012: Clinton lost Texas by 9 points in 2016; Biden lost Texas by 5.4 points in 2020.

Harris will close the gap again. Ted Cruz is unpopular. He could be ousted.

Simon, a short question: Our candidate, Andrei Cherny, lost the Democratic Primary for AZ-01. Has Hopium pivoted to supporting the Democratic congressional nominee, Amish Shah, in that district? Any thoughts on Shah, his candidacy, and the new state-of-the-race?

Hey friends. Fabulous 24 min piece by Lawrence O'donnell last night. I you haven't seen it, he calls out the media...in a big ass kicking way. Plus he played the speech Kamala gave at the UAW yesterday which was live and NOT COVERED BY ANY MEDIA! It's a good watch. Enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZD-oTJ49nls&t=7s

It was incredible how energetic Lawrence was!! And Kamala's speech was terrific; what an opportunity to see it.

Expand full comment

Thanks for sharing. Lawrence was intense. And he is right!

Expand full comment

OMG I have NEVER seen anything like that, and I grew up in DC immersed in this stuff. Lawrence said he surprised himself with how mad he got. It was amazing. And my fave media critic Dan Froomkin has been saying this all along, too. But for someone with that reach on a major network to call out the press like that - WOW.

Expand full comment

Yeah the juxtaposition of their treatment of Trump and Biden's press secretary really made a sharp contrast!!

Expand full comment

Wow!!

I saw this live, and was transfixed. It was so incredibly satisfying to hear him say what we've been complaining about for so long. I love that he called out his own network, too. He's done that before, but nothing like this. I have enormous respect for Lawrence. He reminds me how cowed most MSM really is.

Expand full comment

I've never been more proud of Lawrence than I am today. Almost at the point where I think those of us who care about healthy news should share his video wherever we can and tell the Times and (somewhat to a lesser extent) the Post that if the wantonly biased coverage continues, we will start canceling our subscriptions, tell our friends to do the same, and invite them over to our various substack communities instead as an alternative. These communities for another avenue of healthy news weren't there 8 years ago, and I feel like the only way this stops is if their (MSM's) money starts to become threatened

I am so glad the O’Donnell piece went viral. I hope some of the guilty parties in the media will feel a bit of shame and try to do better.

Simon: I discovered you a few months ago while reading comments on either Heather Cox Richardson's or Joyce White Vance's Substacks, and the three of you are my daily source of political news (albeit from 3 different angles). Thank you for sharing your unique wisdom from a 30+ year career in DEM politics and educating us on how to view the political landscape. As a life-long worrier, I especially appreciate your focus to "Do More. Worry Less." and I have shared that rallying cry countless times with friends, as well as strangers posting on other sites who worry about things that are really beyond our control. I love how you have now added that we do the work to get Harris-Walz and down-ballots DEMS elected by being confident and joyful-- it really does make a difference as opposed to worrying and/or being negative all the time. Because of your positivity and those of your readers, I have been encouraging friends to get involved to help elect DEMS and have shared various easy-to-do tasks they can engage in which will make a huge difference, many of which I've learned about from you and your readers. Thank you for everything you do and the way in which you do this very hard work. You are inspiring lots of people to get engaged!

Interesting suggestion from Tim Hogan (TiminHonolulu for nitter) - part of it is Trump the coward is afraid to go out after the shooting incident.

I know someone who went to the Harris/Walz campaign rally in Detroit. They said it was incredible - packed full, loud and everyone was just so joyous. It is so nice to be working from joy. And it makes the right fall even deeper down into their hatred, making them even easier to defeat.

Watched the replay of your live video for the Hopium community while writing postcards to swing states.

From the clips (couldn't stomach watching the whole thing)I saw of Trump's "press conference," he looked physically unwell. His eyes looked as if he hadn't slept in 48 hours. His orange makeup was either muted or missing altogether. The back of his hair looked unwashed for a week. Definitely decomposing!

On another note -- congrats, Simon for reaching 100K Hopium subscribers!!

Georgian here, from MTG's district, but don't hold that against me, I'm working hard to change that. My main point here is that Georgia is going to go blue again this year. The increasingly diverse, well educated, and sophisticated North Atlanta suburbs (Cobb, northern Fulton, and Gwinnett Counties, mostly) will never vote for Trump, and together with the solidly Democratic City of Atlanta, the rest of Fulton, Dekalb, and Clayton Counties) they will overcome the rural Trump vote and push us into the Harris column in November.

I hope Marc Elias & Co are successful in striking down the absurd, dangerous and anti-democratic new Georgia rule that allows local election boards to *withhold certification* of election results while investigating ... whatever.

Good morning, Arctic! Here’s a short interview from yesterday with Brian Tyler Cohen and Marc Elias. Marc says this new Georgia “rule” violates Georgia state law and WILL be struck down. His only question is when it will be challenged and by whom.

Marc’s group (Democracy Docket) could bring the suit, but he’d love to see Raffensperger (GA Secretary of State) and Kemp (GA Governor) do it. Link to interview: https://youtu.be/MQxKD88e80I?si=_COnFVHQGlnSF3G_

Fellow Georgian here. Grew up in metro ATL, now live in rural West Central GA equal distances between Columbus, Macon, ATL. I noticed election maps in 2022 showed a surprising blue diagonal (and starting to fill in more) from Columbus, through Macon and Northeastward to Athens and Augusta. Plus Savannah area is very blue! Lots of areas can help GA if we can turn out the DEM vote!

P.S. If you have lived in GA a long time and are as old as I, you may remember when Cobb County was strong R territory. Newt Gingrinch moved to Cobb from South Fulton area (he was my rep in those days) b/c he knew he would have a better chance of winning in Cobb. Not any more, thankfully.

Yes, I lived in south Cherokee County back then so I had the “honor” of having Newt misrepresenting me.That blue diagonal you noticed is part of the so called Black Belt. Lots of African American voters who will turn out for us again this year.

Hello! I grew up in Southwest Georgia, in a small city surrounded by rural communities. I remember when GA had a two-term Dem governor (Zell Miller) and two multi-term Dem Senators (Wyche Fowler and Sam Nunn). Granted, Zell eventually switched to Republican, for reasons neither he nor no one else can fully explain, but it seemed like the 2000 election is where things really switched and the state turned really red at all levels. It was red since Reagan presidentially (1992 excepted), but not so much for the other elections until then. Now, it seems like the reverse may be very slowly starting to happen. Really interesting to watch if realignment fully materializes.
