Friend told me he heard a good discussion on 2024 last week at the Brunswick Group and it is “worse than I thought.” And added “so many factors working against us.” I hope and pray we can educate voters between now and 2024. I feel like I am constantly toggling between hope and grief.
Look at the Brunswick group business and people. https://www.brunswickgroup.com. No shade - in my past I worked in that world (and there are tons of good people) - but I would be very skeptical as the worldview is very money driven (and politico like). Not to say we don’t have real challenges but things have not suddenly cratered, the good news is still real. The value of Simon, IMNHO, and this community is counter the catastrophizing and focus on the many positives we have while still being realistic (and doing the work). Remember, most of the electorate is not paying attention (we have lots of open field ahead of us). We proved them wrong in VA and elsewhere. Let’s do it again and again.
I wish "someone" would reflect on JFK's handbook, Profiles in Courage, but update it for our time, Maybe with a title, e.g., "Profiles in Treason."
Along with a mini-series and/or docudrama with a recap by Arnold Schwarzenegger who can speak from experience about what Nazism did to his homeland, Hitler's birthplace.
The Arts have a special opportunity/responsibility to wake the sleepwalkers to take action against the Nazi Wave, and break it on the shoals.
Just listened to Thursdays briefing. I am a co-leader of the Downtown Nasty Women Social Group. I am also an immigration attorney. I agree to some extent with your opinion on how the Latino vote may respond to Trumps anti-immigrant statements/rants (assuming the messaging becomes effective from Team Biden/MSM). But what I have found when having these political discussions on immigration w my clients or with other 1st gen people is a cause for concern. I hear many differentiate their journey to USA/citizenship from current migrant crisis. They came in “the right way/legally” vs the migrants (its another discussion as to why this is a BS claim). Lots of classism and what Isabel Wilkerson describes in her book CASTE. A separation from the lowest group in power (Black Americans) to align more with those with greater power (white Americans). And as you know more than me the Latino/Hispanic vote is not a monolith and has found to be very different in AZ/NV vs TX/FL.
As an aside I too grew up in Fairfield County (Brookfield) and played soccer/soccer fan.
I feel like the socialism label has hurt a ton in South FL for folks that fled Venezuela or Cuba. Puerto Ricans who moved to the mainland are shifting right too. I also saw a pretty alarming chart of new voter registrations among Hispanics in the southwest trending up, close to 50% in Arizona, for instance. I don’t know what it will take to get through to different folks that rounding up citizens in concentration camps is worse than spending more for milk and eggs.
Courier Newsroom has a free newsletter,Floricua, targeted to Puerto Ricans in Florida and PR. PR voters aren’t able to vote in presidential elections but are able to vote in the primaries!
“ At Floricua, we believe in journalism that strengthens our communities, and will always aim to spotlight efforts to rebuild struggling economies, expand access to health care and child care, and reduce inequality in all forms. Voting rights are an especially important issue for us, as we believe civically engaged Boricuas are essential for a strong democracy.”
Puerto Ricans can't vote in the presidential election IF they are living in PR, but they absolutely can if they are in FL or one of the other 49 US states. I have PR friends.
Thanks,Cheryl !I should have clarified it as PR voters living in Puerto Rico aren’t able to vote in presidential elections but are able to vote in primaries.
Understand all this. But the raids, concentration camps, mass deportations is too much for the general public and for Hispanic immigrants too. It's too much, too awful, and will do enormous harm to our economy.
These links between Giuliani and Russia are beyond disturbing. We have to stop MAGA and Co from poisoning America. We have to stop Speaker Jordan and his embrace of christofacism and White nationalism. Both are deadly to a healthy democratic society.
I totally agree with your NC strategy. I have a request for those of us who would like to provide funding for efforts that are underway there. I’m not a major donor, but I’ve given enough that I’m on everyone’s list. I’m amazed at the number of questionable or scam requests that I get every day. I’m now starting to get requests, some very questionable ones, to fund efforts there. In one of your upcoming articles could you include a list of organizations that you would recommend we support? Keep up the great work that you’re doing.
Simon, I was happy to hear you say yesterday you're not giving up on Texas and Florida in 2024. Agree that holding the Senate next year will be a challenge, but there are significant opportunities to glue Ted Cruz and Rick Scott (and every Republican) to the disastrous overturning of Roe. Cruz voted for all three Supreme Court justices who tipped the scales against 50 years of settled law. Scott only took office in 2019 but in 2020 he voted to confirm ACB who pretended she was neutral on the subject at her hearing and then voted to kill Roe. For that matter, I hope every Democrat running for Senate - and President Biden - will focus heavily on the Supreme Court in their campaigns!
If you want to help Dems in FL, Postcards to Voters (www.postcardstovoters.org) is aiming to remind every FL Dem who votes by Mail to reauthorize the request. The FL GOP passed a law that VBM requests were only good for 2 years. This is a good volunteer opportunity for the down times before primaries get going. It looks like they finished up Volusia Co., but I expect a new County will be posted soon.
Thanks, Cheryl - I'm a big fan of Postcards to Voters and have been writing to Florida Democrats in various counties encouraging them to vote by mail for years. Hope others will join us!
Hell yeah, Anderson Clayton! My momma's people are from Henderson, NC (teeny tiny town near the VA border) and many of them live in N.C. still. I'm a Georgia girl now, but willing to do a lot of things to help save N.C.! So grateful she's coming to chat!
Love your work!

I absolutely agree. Nazis and Fascists have no place in a free society and never have.

FYI, Kimberly Pope Adams has requested a recount, as is her right in an election as close as hers.
Fingers crossed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
