YES YES YES YES THIS RIGHT HERE!!! I'm only a registered Democrat under duress because I'm in a stupid closed primary state. I'd rather be registered Independent.
Based on the Axios story about Democratic MOCs being frustrated that we all are calling them rather than republicans (even though they know we’ll be ignored if we are not constituents), I worry that some of these members think that this is a just a progressive concern (saving our Democracy) given the important role of Indivisble and MoveOn (both referenced in the Axios article) in the calls and they are being told by their consultants and political directors to not go too far “to the left” (and saving democracy) to avoid alienating the middle of the road voters. It’s just a guess but it is a possible explanation for the perplexing non urgent behavior of some of the MOCs on the town halls I’ve been on. Wonder what others think? Maybe we need to - through polling - make it clear that this - saving our democracy - is a concern for all Democratic voters (and that fighting tooth and nail for it is a requirement for any Democrat who wants to get re-elected). Here’s the article if you haven’t seen it: https://www.axios.com/2025/02/12/democrats-jeffries-move-on-indivisible-trump
It’s a pretty weak article IMO. Frankly I don’t care if my Members are annoyed although they don’t seem to be. I have seen others besides Indivisible and MoveOn encouraging people to call: AOC, a local politician I know, and our very own Simon.
Made my calls today. We really need to get it across to the Senate and House that they should be partnering with others to be loud right now. Meidas has crossed 4,000,000 subscribers and there's no reason why there shouldn't be a team of communications people out doing press conferences and talking from the legislative side as well.
Allegedly (12:45 PM US-ET) the DOJ has found a quisling to file the dismissal of Eric Adam's corruption case, who is going to find themselves very much never working again and potentially losing their license to practice law very soon.
Here is what Adams did shortly after the DOJ moved to dismiss his corruption case:
. Eric Adams joins forces with Trump border czar after DOJ orders case dropped
"Already engulfed in a political firestorm, New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) appeared on "Fox & Friends" alongside Trump administration border czar Tom Homan Friday morning.
"The appearance followed an announcement from Adams Thursday that he had met with Homan and was working on implementing an executive order that would allow Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents (ICE) to operate at Rikers Island jail.
"The big picture: Their joint appearance comes just a day after federal prosecutors resigned from their positions after refusing an order from the Department of Justice to drop charges against Adams."
What appears to be missed in all this: Adams' charges are being dismissed "without prejudice." That means they are not dismissed forever. The charges can be brought up again in the event that Adams decides not to play along at some future time.
Basically the same tactic as DT for Canada and Mexico re tariffs - limited time relief but on a choke chain. Same as Mafia neighborhood store "protection" techniques.
Called my Senator and Representative today requesting they make a criminal referral for Musk and his gang ; and I thanked them. They are working hard. It seems to me that if we can’t get the system to work right there’s a great risk that more will turn to violence.
I don’t know Musk’s end game either, but a big part of it is continuing to demolish government functions so he can take them over himself as he’s already done with SpaceX and Starlink. He’s already said he wants to replace our air traffic controllers with AI, and he’s trying to bully OpenAI into selling their business to him. For an idea of how deadly this could be, recall that for a time, Musk unilaterally withheld Starlink service from Ukraine because he felt like it.
I've been finally reading Timothy Snyder, maybe later than the rest of you, and this is just plainly what he calls sadopopulism.
This is what we are up against. It is sinister because while one might count on people turning away from a government that deliberately inflicts pain, some will not. This is what we have to fight.
In terms of getting our leaders to understand what they are up against, it seems like this is what they need to know:
Whoa. I just watched the referenced episode and this all makes sense. Throughout our history, those in power always sought to divide the powerless and encouraged conflict between those groups.
Certainly true. I guess somehow I did not fully grasp the part which, though I think I sort of understood it at some level, is the fact that some people will accept the pain as long as they think others are hurt worse.
So you ramp up deportations, anti LGBTQ, whatever, and your bandwidth for hurting even your own supporters goes up.
I still think there is a segment who won't go for that, and will turn against Trump when they feel real pain. It's just bracing to realize that some will not.
That is what we need a strategy to fight against. Probably calling it out and explaining the tactic is the first step. And repeat it over and over again.
Two can play that game. Promoting disagreement, friction and outright hostility between the various MAGA power brokers should be a a key part of Democratic strategy.
The tech bros are by and large atheists, and I would think there could be some competition for power between the tech bros and the religious extremists. There is a wedge I think to exploit.
Related to this, I'm very curious about MAGA's impression of electric cars. A MAGA family member went on a rant about them with me last fall. I have no idea what she thinks now that the Tesla CEO is our acting president. I agree that there is a wedge between these groups.
She had a host of reasons! They are too heavy for the roads, their tires wear out more quickly because they are so heavy, lithium mining is bad for the environment, they aren't convenient for long trips, etc.
One of the best things to happen was the Vivek-Musk/Bannon rift about the guest worker visas. It was a thing of beauty when Vivek insulted MAGA and posted that long rant about how US workers aren't qualified and are lazy. We need more of that sort of thing.
And whenever such things happens, Democrats as well as other democracy-defending Americans need to magnify it and keep it in the news for as long as possible. One of the best ways to do that is to push all the news media to compel the nutters on both sides of that argument to answer difficult questions and defend their viewpoints – again and again.
This morning I read Joyce Vance's Civil Discourse first. First, Joyce described the Eric Adams issue in great detail: "The acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Danielle Sassoon, a member of the Federalist Society who clerked for Justice Antonin Scalia, resigned rather than dismiss her office’s case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Upon learning that the case was being reassigned to them, so did the Chief of the Public Integrity Section (PIN), a unit inside of DOJ’s Criminal Division in Washington, D.C., and the senior career official in the Criminal Division."
But then, even more completely horrifying, Joyce really did a deep dive on Kash Patel. This made me shake from head to foot. His nomination has already moved out of the Senate Judiciary Committee on a party vote. We must urgently DO SOMETHING NOW.
Blanket the phones in the Senate with your calls of outrage, follow up with emails on the Senator's contact form. I've already done this when both the Bondi and Patel nominations were about to be reviewed by the Senate Judiciary Committee. They remind me of Hitler's Gestapo or Putin's secret police. It doesn’t matter if your Senators are Democrats or Republicans. I know some of the Republicans are non-responsive but do it anyway. Many of us have been doing this every day.
If you can get to your Senators' offices in DC or locally, tell them what you think. Deliver a letter. Call them. Do what you can. In 2003 I was with a friend visiting DC. I lived in California at the time. We went over to the Senate offices. Just as we were entering Senator Feinstein’s office she came out to the lobby. Surprise! (She was Chairperson of the Senate Intelligence Committee at the time.) We were able to hand the letter to her stating our opposition to the war in Iraq. She voted for the war anyway, but we did our best.
We need to Do Something (Michelle Obama said this.) or our Democracy is dead or at least in hospice care.
There's at least one more thing you can do in addition to your calls to Congress-critters: also call at least ONE neighbor or friend and ask him/her to make a call or two. Take a couple of minutes and write up a short summary of what to say. Explain to the neighbor/friend how easy it will be to make their call(s) and how important it is. You will have multiplied your influence.
I hope all New Yorkers will call Gov. Hochul and urge her to remove Eric Adams from office. If you have friends or relatives in the state, lean on them! 518-474-8390
Does she have the power to do that? Like Governor Hochul, Mayor Eric Adams was elected by voters. I see the Likes your post is receiving, but I am not aware that governors can remove elected mayors.
EDIT: I would be really interested in a link to any article where acknowledged legal experts voice such an opinion. Count me deeply skeptical!
Moreover, it would be highly problematic if American governors could remove elected mayors at will. With such powers, just imagine what governors such as Greg Abbot, Ron DeSantis, Brian Kemp, Tate Reeves or Greg Gianforte could do against Democratic mayors!
"A move to declare "mayoral inability" would be near-impossible and the environment to remove the second-ever Black mayor of New York City, while growing, remains low."
Yes, removing him for “inability” seems unlikely. A few paragraphs up, the articles talks about the governor presenting chargers against him and giving him the opportunity to provide a defense. This seems to be a separate process and possible way to remove him from office?
I saw that mentioned in a couple of the linked articles. Still seems very unlikely. Moreover, this would be really easy for Trump/Musk & MAGA to portray as "weaponization" of questionable processes.
I heard her ( Hotchul) speak to Rachel Maddow about this last night. She is being very careful to review taking this step; and yes. she stated she IS looking into doing so with her advisors.
From today’s NYT: There are five ways that Adams could leave office: He could resign, Gov. Kathy Hochul could remove him, he could decide not to run for re-election, he could lose the election this year, or a five-member committee could be formed to remove him, though that process could be complicated. Here’s more information on each path.
I am not in New York City but I did call and request the removal of Adams. He is a danger to New York City and his quid pro quo is illegal with trump. He just gave that horrible Holman access to Ellis Island today. I asked the Governor to use her power to stop him. I have so much respect for the prosecutors that are refusing to drop his charges and they are resigning rather than break the law!
I live in Brooklyn and hope Kathy does not remove Eric. I want to vote both out of office. And Don and Elon are hoping that Kathy will remove him. I’d rather not play into their hands and simply vote for a more acceptable mayor in June.
GOP = Groupies of Putin IMHO this political party shouldn't be allowed to exist. It's been devoted to the destruction of America for some years. If it were the "evil Left" it never would have gotten this far. But it's right wing so it's ok. Hmmmmm.
I ‘d like to suggest that we also start posting comments on the social media feeds of our party’s leaders and prominent supporters. Obama, for example, has nothing on his feeds about the situation we are in. It’s not just him (it’s almost every former President, prominent retired leaders) and our leading celebrity supporters. So, it would be good to ask them, nicely, to call for Congress (and republicans) to honor and fight for the constitution, our democracy and against lawlessness. I am talking about Obama, HRC, Bush and major celebrities (like a Taylor Swift). Too many voters don’t know what is happening (we need their help to get the word out). If you haven’t seen it - here is a great diatribe from Politics Girl about all this. https://m.youtube.com/shorts/keNw6CtcGYE
I don't know about HRC but - HCR is on YouTube a lot and offers free Letters from an American daily as email and as podcast or audio. She's calling it out! Better than HRC.
You are correct! I was referring to Hillary, but erroneously typed the letters for Heather and have now corrected. I have seen people reposting short posts/memes from H. Clinton and am so impressed that she is speaking out regularly!
I have been sending emails to my Congressional representative. When I did a Google search yesterday, I found out she has been interviewed on two podcasts about the actions she has been taking. Yay! I went ahead and posted the link to one of the podcasts on Threads and Bluesky so more people could hear about her actions. I get the idea our representatives may be a little busy. 😊
I agree with you why aren’t our former presidents taking a position on what’s happening? This is not the time to stick with “tradition” when our country is being destroyed from within.
its the destruction of the deep state long promised. it's not something that citizens who love their country would understand. nihilism. has nothing to do with saving money or efficiency or fraud. they want a smaller govt filled with only their people with stooges at the top responding only to one man. which is pretty much a dictatorship. except we have a twin headed monster with two meglomaniacs: broken, lawless, criminal, greedy, lying, power hungry men. why didnt someone just love them when they were little boys. we could have saved the planet.
No question this is the darkest & scariest Hopium post I’ve read since joining a year ago. Yikes. 😳
The US Congress has been a feckless group for at least 50 years based on their long habit of dumping things into an unelected judiciary. No doubt the GOP members currently in office are the biggest group of cowards I have ever seen. This includes people I had a modicum of respect for, like Bill Cassidy and Lisa Murkowski.
I have been maintaining that it’ll be a lot easier to attack GOP congressional members than to attack Trump directly - for a whole host of reasons. It’s why I was glad to receive an email from MoveOn yesterday about a billboard initiative they are rolling out in GOP districts that have a sizable share of moderate to liberal voters. I am thinking of contributing to this cause. However it’s been years since I have donated to MoveOn - are they still a reputable group???
I also received an action oriented email from Indivisible that I thought was good. Same question: are they a reputable group to which I should consider donating???
I have to wonder why more people aren’t sounding the alarm. Scary insane stuff.
I consider Move On reputable and would donate to them, especially this initiative. Indivisible is definitely legit and ok to donate to. They are more or less leading the grassroots opposition right now. I was just on a mass call with them yesterday.
You may also be interested in Indivisible's Payback Project, which is similar to the Move On one, but targeting 5 or so republican senators seen as moderate (??) and up for reelection in '26.
I agree. So scary. Where is everyone?? Yes, we need Obama and other party leaders to SPEAK UP in no uncertain terms. It's a five-alarm fire. I'm making calls to reps, too.
Agree with Susan about Move On and Indivisible. They are IMO and experience both reputable and hard working. I donated recently to both and I like to choose carefully like you do. I’m focused upon DNC for now as well as Dem youth groups who are registering Dem youths. Especially in tribal areas.
Love this idea! Just today i saw a digital billboard of the hostage released this past week welcoming him home and thanking Trump. Imagine Biden promoting that stuff w his hostage deals and infrastructure spending. We need more simple messages to reach the less engaged. Trump definitely gets his brand out there shamelessly. We need to start punching harder and billboards are one place thats not tailored to your algorithm.
Wrote to thank Shapiro for standing back up. Wrote to excoriate AG Dave Sunday. And this was my note to McCormick today. His form letter response has been all about how proud he is to be working with disrupters. Dear Dave: I know that you don't even live in PA, that you would have zero reason to care about those of us who do live here. I know that you can escape at any time to a foreign country, with your millions. What I don't know is how you can live with yourself, putting these obvious idiots into the cabinet. You write of "disrupters." Sure. If disruption to you means millions dying from no medicine, Tulsi selling our secrets to Putin, Kash Patel off on one of his conspiracy streaks, and Hegseth not even knowing where Ukraine is on the map. You have tied yourself to a regime that is already going down in flames, and you are going down in flames with it. Check the polls. The people are not with you. Nor will they be, in the next election cycle.
Yes, the damage being done is horrific and irreversible. You can't just turn the light switch back on, and have everything back to normal. I stay awake at night wondering how we have reached this point without even a handful of Republicans in Washington standing up and saying, "enough". Surely, there must be a time when that will happen, or maybe not.
Today I'm writing "The time is always right to do what is right. MLKing" thank you postcards to the 19 state attorney generals. REFCreations if you are interested.
I usually don't contribute to special elections in deep red states, but I did to Gay Valimont in Florida, and probably will to the two other House races. Not because I think any of them will win, but I would like to imagine it, and right now a miracle for our side would be in order.
I wish more people would go after their Republican Representatives by showing up in their offices. Living in blue Oregon, I am saying "thank you", and "please do more."
I wonder if republicans are hearing from their constituents at all. They are very quiet as if trying to present a front that everyone agrees with trump and Musk. I have to think that some Republican voters are also upset at what is going on.
@Simaon: Could you please include, in your flinal section of what we can do, e.g. calling our Senators and Reps, a living list of impacts to everyday Americans (e.g. crops they couldn't sell due to the USAID stoppage, people losing jobs due to shutting down NIH and the associated grants and research amounting to billions of dollars), etc so we can have better dialogue at our local coffee shops and parks? Thanks for your consideration...I know its so much more work....
I write a script each morning. I've been waking up about 3:30 am. I make a longer script for the contact form/email. Then I make a shorter script for the phone calls. I share it with three friends and we get to work.
It would be nice if our Dems offered a stronger contrast across the board.
Would you kindly post an non-paywalled link to that NYT article?
It was mentioned in Maddow’s interview with the governor last night, I believe. I’ll see if I can find a link.
Andrew Weismann said that Kathy Hochul can remove Eric Adams here: https://open.substack.com/pub/weissmann/p/three-things-that-can-be-done-to?r=9xeiz&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false
That should be Andrew Weissmann.
https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/politics/eric-adams-resignation-calls-whats-next/6150655/
Toward bottom of this article, it mentions power to remove mayor in the New York City charter.
Thank you! That article seems crystal clear:
"A move to declare "mayoral inability" would be near-impossible and the environment to remove the second-ever Black mayor of New York City, while growing, remains low."
Yes, removing him for “inability” seems unlikely. A few paragraphs up, the articles talks about the governor presenting chargers against him and giving him the opportunity to provide a defense. This seems to be a separate process and possible way to remove him from office?

She has the power.
Maybe not “remove”, but hold a vote of no confidence by voters to remove & replace.

Thank you! Let's pressure Hochul, which i will do as a former longtime New Yorker, born in Yonkers!
I am not in New York City but I did call and request the removal of Adams. He is a danger to New York City and his quid pro quo is illegal with trump. He just gave that horrible Holman access to Ellis Island today. I asked the Governor to use her power to stop him. You are correct! I was referring to Hillary, but erroneously typed the letters for Heather and have now corrected. I have seen people reposting short posts/memes from H. Clinton and am so impressed that she is speaking out regularly!
So good to know Hillary is still active!
Bravo Danielle Sassoon.
I was on that call also, and have already donated to Project Payback twice. Highly impressed with Indivisible.
Same here.
I agree. So scary. Where is everyone?? Yes, we need Obama and other party leaders to SPEAK UP in no uncertain terms. It's a five-alarm fire. I'm making calls to reps, too.
Speak up, eh? A far more⁶ pertinate question is
Why did you not speak up when the coup unnfolded?
????
which coup? You gotta be more specific here...
Simon, I don’t believe you have suggested that we send or leave comments to
/at the White House. Do you think doing so is either useless or a bad idea?

Of course I just now received the exact same Dave form letter. He must not know many words.
Money to races in districts that are currently not blue are investments, not winners. Good for you and thanks!

Good plan. I like that.
very impressive, thank you
