Did anyone watch the segment on Rachael Maddow last night about Project Salt Box? The project is mapping and tracking the purchasing and building of future ICE concentration camps across the country. It can be used by citizens to protest the building of them in their communities

Rachael Maddow just posted it on her Substack. You can read it there.

Yes, that was amazing. Thanks for sharing this.

Anyone else find it incredibly alarming that ICE is *purchasing* these warehouses rather than merely *renting* them? That indicates long-term plans! And I think Garry Kasparov hits the nail on the head when he states:

"If you think a massive US gulag is being built just for illegal immigrants, along with a federal paramilitary force as large as the Marines, you’re a fool."

Susan Dieterlen's avatar

Yes to all of this, and I am incredibly alarmed, but also purchase is more expensive, which is more money going into someone's hands. Very strong hunch there's yet another corrupt scheme happening here. At this point, it's the safe default assumption.

I have no doubt that that’s what they want to do. They want people to die either by exporting them to dangerous situations or subjecting them to concentration camp conditions here. We can’t have it. We can’t stand idly by as our own government with the help of our tax dollars ruins life after life after life.

Tom Thumb's avatar

Of course they're planning to lock up citizens. They told us this (if anyone still had any doubts after what Trump said to Bukele last spring) on New Year's Eve when they posted an image of a serene beach with the caption "America after 100 million deportations." Add up the number of undocumented, legal immigrants, and even naturalized citizens, and that still leaves room in the gulag for nearly 43 million of us. But are we going to let 40,000 of them warehouse 43 million of us? Or are we going to make sure *they're* the only ones who get deported/warehoused if they try?

The CONCENTRATION CAMPS are most disturbing, and I’m glad to see the local resistance ramping up. The stories coming out from detainees are a blight on the USA. No judicial warrants (Amendment IV), cruel and unusual punishment (VIII), suppressed free speech and assembly (I), denied legal counsel and speedy trial (VI and VII), due process and self-incrimination (V), and so on….in the eyes and acts of the fascist regime, the Bill of Rights and Constitution are scraps of paper.

Simon, thank you for the good information. I watched Lutnick's interview where he described how he and his wife had coffee once with Epstein and decided to never have any contact with him again. It was a complete boldfaced lie. He should be forced to resign and if he won't resign he should be impeached.

Trump's social media post today about a bridge with Canada is absolutely batshit insane. I am urging my elected officials to make Trump's mental state a regular, consistent talking point, just as Republicans did with Joe Biden's age. I called Congressman Raskin and Senators Alsobrooks and Van Hollen about this point and about the ICE concentration camps and the need to not compromise on judicial warrants. I'm continuing to write postcards to NC voters today.

My post to WaPo on this story: Very unfair! Very unfair! Very unfair! There has never been a bigger whiner in the history of the species than Donald Trump. Real men don't whine, MAGAs. They don't. Y'all need to get yourselves a new god---this one's broken.

And why the never-ending hate for *Canada*? Isn't it obvious? Canadians are everything he's not: kind, generous, well-educated, well-spoken, humble, courageous, dignified, funny, the list goes on and on. SAD!

Tom Thumb's avatar

I can't believe Lutnick was the guy who had me in tears on 9/11 as he talked about the devastation of his company, Cantor Fitzgerald, that day. Of course, as it turned out, the grand promises he made to the families who lost loved ones that say soon gave way to the usual Wall Street greed. And now he's where he truly belongs, with his fellow fraudsters and worse.

Cynthia Erb's avatar

I did. One thing that impressed me was that it was people who'd been in the military and understood how to read government contracts who were among the first to notice the pattern of these DHS purchases. Makes me think there are so many talented people out there--maybe retired, maybe forced out by this government--who can really make a difference in this fight.

I'm replying to Kim but it's out of sequence.

I also called my Republican congressman to ask him to roll back the tariffs. Mentioned damage to agriculture in particular, and to Canada.

Laura Lowery's avatar

Just made my call to my Republican House rep telling her to oppose Trump's tariffs. I spoke with a staff member.

I wonder if the plans for permanent detention facilities, at least on the East Coast, will have those detainees working on Trump's Arch, Ballroom and the former KC.

You know, just like Pharoah.

Yup, King Herod was known for building big, beautiful temples, and for renaming the Sea of Galilee the Sea of Tiberius, (need to stoke the ego of the emperor). There is still a city of Tiberius. Pharaoh, Caesar, Hitler. Same playbook, different hat.

Susan Dieterlen's avatar

Forced labor is going to come into it somewhere.

Lisa Iannucci's avatar

you can bank on that.

I called my members of Congress regarding the tariffs, ICE funding, and the so-called detention centers. The Courier article was very helpful.

In his famous letter to Hezekiah Niles, on 13 February 1818, John Adams asked:

"But what do We mean by the American Revolution? Do We mean the American War? The Revolution was effected before the War commenced. The Revolution was in the Minds and Hearts of the People."

And so it must be with us: there must be a revolution in the "Minds and Hearts of the People."

There are 900 billionaires in the United State. Reform the tax code so the Oligarchs pay a lot more taxes.

Hank Friedman's avatar

Agreed but also a big lift. Those billionaires will spend big $$$ on lobbyists to prevent any meaningful changes to the tax code. It would be better to have a full funded/ staffed IRS to collect all the taxes owed. It is estimated that there are $750,000,000,000 of uncollected taxes annually. Why do you think Rs don't want a robust IRS? Very few people making <$400k get audited. High net worth individuals have complex returns and the IRS needs investigators, accountants, auditors to properly review and audit these returns.

Second, close the current tax loopholes. More tax dollars captured, easier than a significant tax code rewrite.

Third, there needs to be a corporate alternative tax minimum rate.https://www.investopedia.com/terms/a/alternativeminimumtax.asp

Great article. As always I am calling my Rep and Senators. Thank you for the amazing detention center status and map. I have a question, Simon, I hope you will address....along with everything you covered here, what about these two items..SAVE America Act (HR 7296) and Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) Act (HR 7300)? These two bills, renditions of the SAVE ACT, if passed will seriously suppress voter rights. Are they buried in DHS funding and tariff legislation? I hope you'll talk about this....Thank you!

Great and important coverage, as always, thanks Simon! One small pet peeve: I hate when any Republican is referred to as a “moderate.” I guess there are a precious few but I think the vast majority are extreme right wing ideologues who ultimately always side w Trump and the Maggats.

I emailed my rep and senator. I gave to every hopium candidate. I am calling all the reps in oregon and other states to leave messages.

Self report from weekend - On Thursday night I went to an anti-Palantir protest (reported on several posts ago). On Stupor Sunday, I did a twofer - went to my regular Menlo Park Speaks Out at 10:30 (~30 people), and then at 11:30 caught CalTrain one stop north to Redwood City (225+ people). Doing the Honk and Wave on El Camino Real! Then went to a Stupor Bowl party in Sunnyvale, a few miles from the stadium, caught Green Day doing American Idiot, and heard/saw the flyover. Many discussions of our predicament and it felt good to be with friends and yummy food among the rollercoaster of optimism and despair. The power poles in Bad Bunny show really resonated among the many fine moments.

Tom Thumb's avatar

When you consider that they not only had Bad Bunny, but Green Day and a terrific rendition of Lift Every Voice And Sing, it's clear the NFL's not only not afraid of Trump anymore, they gave him both middle fingers on their biggest stage!

Just did a search for "how does Amazon support ICE?" and got the response: "Through AWS, Amazon provides the digital backbone that allows ICE and DHS to track, store, and process the data used to target, detain, and disappear people from their communities."

And yesterday, when I went grocery shopping at Trader Joe's, I told the person who was checking me out that "I am now shopping at Trader Joe's because I'm boycotting Whole foods. And that's because Amazon is supporting ICE terror, and that includes detention centers, like the one nearby Centerville, VA." She was shocked.

I asked her if she was seeing more customers than usual at Trader Joe's and she said she was. I said "that's great, and it's probably because other people are also boycotting Whole Foods because of ICE terror."

So I kept my message short, simple, and to the point. And I repeated the phrase ICE terror. Hope this message sticks with her!

Leni, are you aware of this site? https://www.resistandunsubscribe.com/ It gives people a tangible and sane way to apply pressure on Corporate America. Hope you will check out the link. Do what you can, for as long as you can. Please share with your family/ friends/ social circle. Thanks.

Thanks, Hank. Yes, I was aware of that site. It's a great resource! And, it's one of the things that motivated me to take action. Also, Simon mentioned on last week's chat that he and his family gave up Amazon. That, also helped propel me to stop shopping at Whole Foods.

And today, when my husband and I went out for lunch to a nice restaurant to celebrate our anniversary, instead of using our Whole Foods credit card, we used our Costco card. We don't want a "side of detention centers" with our lunch!!!

"We don't want a "side of detention centers" with our lunch!!!" Powerful words -- thank you!

Warehouses are not built for people. And we know that by the scope and scale of these purchases and the way this private army of the regime, treats American citizens who protest and speak against them, these gulags are for them as well as the immigrants being rounded up.
