A few days ago, I mentioned that having a primary was good for Maine voters.

Now, given the news from the past few days, I'm even more sure of my position (and now I can say that despite Platner having positive positions, he is clearly unfit. And it's actually a positive that Mills (and the Some Dude who is still running) are in the race.

Even giving Platner the benefit of the doubt -- "I was drunk in Croatia," crediting how he got his 3rd SS Panzer Division Totenkopf, and even not knowing what it was until now -- it looks like he lacks basic judgment for the role. And other have now pointed out that Platner is a "war enthusiast," so it is actually _hard_ to credit his lack of knowledge.

He has a Nazi tattoo on his chest, of the skull used by that Nazi division. And the latest reports are from classmates that he knew exactly what it was.

I recently made a presentation on the Resolutions Project to the Oro Valley (AZ) Democratic Club.

While I didn’t consider Oro Valley, an upscale incorporated town in NW Tucson, a particularly good prospect for passing or even seriously considering a resolution – this, from a partisan perspective – I looked at the presentation as a template for broadening the scope of the project beyond approaching amenable local legislators.

A presentation on the project, properly attuned to the parochial interests of the audience, along with emphasizing the underlying “Letter to America” themes, can provide an opening to reaching core and diverse members of the public, who may be indifferent or even hostile to a partisan approach.

We at Hopium have always recognized that organizations throughout America, like chambers of commerce and other business/professional associations, religious and community/civic/cultural groups, non-profits, political and apolitical groups, homeowners’/renters’ associations, the list goes on…. are all non-compromising stakeholders in American Democracy in fundamental ways that go back to our nation’s founding. And often in ways that they may not immediately understand. Our goal should be to promote the undeniable fact that they do have a critical stake, and do so in their own language.

That most of these associations are always looking for speakers presents a golden opportunity for broadening the scope and impact of the project.

Thanks for sharing this, I think that's great that you did that. I've been trying to reach out to some organizations (a Democratic club, an Indivisible group) in nearby Davis, CA, where I think a resolution might have a good chance of passing. Did you do a powerpoint for your presentation?

Yes. Thanks for the request! Again, I'll note that the intent wasn't necessarily to get a resolution passed, but to make the case that ALL OF US have a critical stake in supporting American Democracy. All of the links are downloadable from my Proton drive:

The image of the back hoe demolishing the East Wing hurt my stomach so much! How can this be allowed? I wrote and mailed postcards to Virginia, I participated in No Kings and wrote my Rep to thank him for his support as well as urging him to keep fighting. I will send money to Mikey Sherrill, I am worried about this race, I am reading that it is getting too close and the ads against her are everywhere in New Jersey! I voted Yes on 50 on the day my ballot arrived and it has been counted and recorded! Thank you Simon for keeping us informed and motivated!

Where did you read about the Sherrill race "getting too close." Sherrill is up 6 in the polling averages - https://fiftyplusone.news/polls/governor/general/new-jersey

and was up 7 in the last independent poll. The race has not closed. She has had a 5-9 point lead in all independent this fall. We have to run the tape here like we do all elections but this race is not moving towards the Rs and folks should work out not to repeat what are in essence Republican talking points about the race.

Thank you! I read comments by local New Jerseyans on various facebook posts ( HCR, Jay Kuo,) that they are concerned. The Repubs are very loud with their negative messaging/ ads . I am confident that New Jersey will stay blue, but I understand what you are saying, we can't lose faith and fall into that trap. When the recall for the Newsom vote occurred a couple years back, all the negative ads made it seem like the vote would be close and it wasn't, the people came out and voted against it in strong numbers. We can take the momentum of No Kings and lead her across the finish line. Let's go New Jersey!

Yes, we all have to recall that we live in a poisoned info environment and it is our responsibility here at Hopium to do our best to counter it and stay truthful. There has been a major op to convince people that NJ is competitive and "tightening" when the public polling does not confirm this. Yes there are negative ads but there always negative ads.

I cried at the permanent destruction of part of our historic ‘the people’s house’. There are so many things to grieve.

But it will not stop me from doing my minor part. I travel to SC capital for No Kings with 2 daughters & 2 young adult grandchildren Saturday where we were surrounded by 17,000 other Blue Dots. Our ruby red state hasn’t gone purple, but we’re trying.

I am so appalled at Trump's desecration of the White House that it was uppermost in my message to Senators Cruz and Cornyn, along with the tariffs and ICE cruelty. I wonder how they must feel (or not feel) about this damage while he builds an unnecessary ballroom!

I also wonder if any Republican voters must also be appalled at the White House destruction when maybe they don't care about the mass deportations.

Faith Wilson's avatar

It would be great if we had a ballroom demolition fundraiser in 2029 where 20 bucks buys you 15 minutes with a crane, with fired members of USAID getting the first crack. The fact that MAGA constantly brings up the ballroom "not being taxpayer funded" will make this all the more fun watching the oligarchs see their bribery investments reduced to rubble. I'm for total obliteration of any tacky architectural traces of that asshole from the White House.

I caught the end of this convo between you and Stuart live yesterday and this morning have listened from start to finish. I can't overstate how valuable I feel these discussions are between the two of you, your experience and knowledge of the history behind today's events - Stuart's analysis of the Republican party is worth the price of admission - and where we are now and how we reckon with where are at this moment and going forward should not be missed by anyone in the Hopium community.

I also enjoy listening to these two. Stuart always brings more insight into how the Republicans have operated over the years. He's still struggling with his part, trying to make amends but I hope he can find a way to forgive himself. He's awakened, reflective & trying to educate the rest of us about the truth of who the Republicans really are.

Simon was trying to encourage Stuart of the Lincoln Project to use their huge platform as he said to "seize the moment of now" but for now, it doesn't seem that their ready for what Simon has in mind. Perhaps Medias Touch will be more opened as it too has a huge platform. Their missing this opportunity.

There's a very interesting op-ed in the Bulwark about a Republican operative who publicly left the party recently. While his complicity sickened me, I also salute his bravery for listening to his inner voice, acting on it, and going public.

https://www.thebulwark.com/p/my-last-day-as-an-accomplice-of-the-republican-party-miles-bruner

I spent last weekend with dear college friends, one of whom has gone full MAGA. He burned a lot of bridges on social media, but we decided to invite him and promise not to discuss politics. He was deeply touched and said as much. He waited for us while we went to the No Kings rally and did not bring up anything remotely political (except to say that he was surprised to find himself agreeing with Fetterman, which made us laugh). It was really good for all five of us to connect again and work to heal the divisions that Trump is exploiting so effectively. We will reach a point when we get past this and have to charge all those who broke laws, but also try to mend personal rifts.

John Payne's avatar

Well, I watched the 60 minutes clip Simon shared yesterday and I admired Mr. Reuveni's courage and conviction. I think he defended the travel ban because he had a legal argument that he considered within the bounds of reasonableness. He did his job, and to a certain extent, the federal government depends on civil servants doing their jobs even when they are asked to do something they disagree with politically. When Mr. Reuveni was more recently asked to say something that he considered factually wrong and dishonest, he refused and he paid the price with his career. Now he's put his own physical safety on the line to tell the story of what happened. I don't know how we can ask more of him.

Pamela Frazier's avatar

Reuveni was one of the lead lawyers for Trump 1.0 immigration policy including the Muslim ban. I suspect the reason he suddenly saw the light is because he was being ordered to lie to the court on key substantive issues, so he foresaw the likelihood of eventually joining the ranks for former Trump lawyers who are now disbarred. Lying to the court is one of the top things that will get you in trouble with the bar (the other thing is stealing client money).

Still glad he drew a line somewhere, of course, even if the primary motivator was self-preservation.

Tues. congresspersons call script that anyone can riff off of (adjust as appropriate if yours are team red):

- Keep holding the line on the shutdown! Don’t capitulate! People need those ACA tax credits.

- I’m upset re: White House demolition.

- I’m upset re: Trump’s betrayal of Ukraine.

- Keep Paul Ingrassia from getting confirmed, obviously.

- Use budget process (if/when it happens) to scale back ICE. They apparently just bought missile warheads. Trump is trying to wage war on Americans by fusing ICE, DHS & CBP into one militarized omni-force whose mission is to crack skulls, break windows, bust into homes and terrorize, brutalize, arrest and disappear innocent people.

From the ground in NJ: there is definitely vocalized concern bordering on panic. My sources are: campaign operative running the canvassing I did on Sunday, doom & gloom emails from the Sherrill campaign, and campaign webinar on countering right wing social media I attended last night.

My recent canvassing experience has been far more positive than what I experienced in Bucks County PA in 2016 (which left me traumatized). So I can’t tell what is reality and what is intended to be motivating.

We completed our post cards last night and mailed them today. Just signed up for more, Postcards to Voters has at long last added the Sherrill campaign. They are due in 3 days.
