Don't forget - today is the last day to get stamps before the rates go up!! It looks like the USPS website will be down for maintainance (resetting all the prices for postage?) from 11 pm tonight.
Thanks for supporting NC - I'm an NC resident that is working hard to elect Dems where we can. In addition to Josh Stein, I suggest you check out Jeff Jackson. He is my House rep, but he got gerrymandered out of his seat - he no longer lives in the district since it was redrawn and I think thbey made it R+ 13 to 15. So Jeff got in the race for AG (currently held by Stein). His likely GOP opponent will be Dan Bishop, a MAGA election denier who was also my Congressional rep from 2019 (after a special election) through this past Jan. Believe me, we do NOT want Bishop as AG.
Jeff Jackson is a rockstar candidate on the rise... think he’ll be the next US Senator from NC assuming we can get Stein across the finish line as Gov this year.....great example of the incredibly strong bench of younger leadership all over the country
I agree 100%. I know he considered running for Richard Burr's Senate seat in 2022, but the Democratic Party favored Cheri Beasley, so he didn't get into the race. I personally think he could have beaten MAGA Ted Budd. The GOP would have had a harder time coming up with negative ad material - the GOP totally beat the drum on Beasley being "soft on crime". And, of course, the racist dog whistles wouldn't have worked with Jeff as a candidate.
Thanks Simon. Just got a new batch of postcards in to work on. Is an increase in the Latino share of the electorate a good thing for us? I hear that they are getting more conservative.
1) It's just data, need to understand what is happening in our politics, how the US electorate is changing. 2) Yes it's good for us. Our margins with Hispanic voters is +20 to +30, and so more of voters giving us large margins is good.
Don’t accept what you hear as accurate. That’s what the Hopium community is all about: challenge the unsupported narratives we keep hearing on the airwaves.
Sort of related, I hear lots of chatter about how this or that demographic is getting more conservative. I've heard this about young people, people of color, and latinos. I don't think all of those demographics could be swinging against us as we continue to outperform in elections. So much noise out there.
I thin k the Dobbs decision is HUGE in both the African American and Latino communities where maternal mortality is higher and adequate pre-natal care is not a given.
It’s not just the airwaves. Here are two top headlines on the NY TImes’s website this morning:
“ The U.S. Seems to Be Dodging a Recession. What Could Go Wrong?”
(That should have been followed by “We Hate Admitting We Were Wrong”)
and
“ The Market Has Had a Fabulous Run, but This Peak Doesn’t Really Matter”
Several studies have confirmed that the media coverage of the economy under Biden has been far more negative than previous coverage, even when Trump was in office. The explanation of that according to this article is that reporters are just reflecting consumer sentiment — as if that is a reasonable excuse for reporters misleading the public.
They are not a monolithic block; W got quite a few votes 20 years ago. Also, many come from countries where leftists ( just like the right wing governments when in power ) did unpopular things ( Noriega, Castro, Chavez and Maduro ) and that is very easily weaponized by the republicans here. My wife is Colombian and her family were republicans down there; but there is a difference from our version. When we hear about Allende and Chile from the far left here, we do not hear about Latin voices who thought he was a disaster that could affect the whole continent, and that was not an isolated view. The outrage was that he was not defeated by democratic means, and that a US led coup took him out and then murdered thousands. That is most assuredly NOT what people in Chile or South America wanted. Colombia currently has a pretty far left president which is unusual for them. He is not popular, but if he is not re-elected ( and Colombia used to have 1 term limits ) he will respect the process and step down. Colombia has come a long way, but generally the ones I know here ( and I know many ) tend to be conservative Catholics but they prefer Democrats. But not all. Judge Aileen Cannon, for example, is from Colombia, though her parents were Cuban. My wife has pointed out that there is also a history of actual fascism in Hispanic countries, and that the Spanish Civil War and Franco had enormous resonance throughout Spanish America ( Latin America includes Brazil and Haiti, which are not Spanish speaking, but also have similar histories with right wing governments ). Hope that helps.
Hispanic Voters ae not a monolith. The Cuban diaspora in FL definitely favors the GOP. I think I have read that the Venezualians are also pretty conservative. The GOP's labeling of Dems as left-wing radicals has a special significance for some Hispanics depending on the politics in their country of origin.
In addition, some of the bump in Hispanic voters favoring the GOP in 2020 may have been related to Dems not canvassing in 2020 because of Covid while GOP who was downplaying the need to social distance was out in droves. I have read that in-person interactions are especially important to build the trust of Hispanic voters.
Cheryl, if you’re not familiar, Courier Newsroom/Floricua Newsletter to 📣.
“Throughout our pages here, in our newsletters, and on our social media accounts, you’ll find stories that lift up the shared experience of Puerto Ricans living in Florida, along with the facts you need to make informed decisions for yourself and for your family.”
US Hispanic is a misnomer, really. The US Hispanic population is overwhelmingly Mexican American (and that is where the growth is, even in places like Florida). This is from Pew: flargest Hispanic populations in the U.S. by origin group were Mexicans (37.2 million), Puerto Ricans (5.8), Salvadorans (2.5), Dominicans (2.4) and Cubans (2.4), (1.8 million), Colombians (1.4) and Hondurans (1.1). So, think first about Mexican Americans as the group we need to reach (with a growing “US Hispanic” electorate).
I lived in MIami and worked for a US Hispanic media company there with lots of Colombians, Venezuelan. While I loved and love the Cuban culture and people of Miami, they (and the Venezuelans) really only matter politically in South Florida. Even in Florida, the fastest growing Hispanic group are Mexican Americans. As an aside, it is tragic to me how the younger generation of Cubans got red pilled (by YouTubers). I still hope things will change.
Tried to buy a marked down Christmas tree from Macy's, which we can often get for a song. Sometimes for 25 bucks. But they were all gone. Manager told me people actually paid 1200 bucks for them. I was gobsmacked. You don't see that in a downturn.
People are voting FOR greater democracy, in our politics and in our economy!
Bidenomics actively pursues the promise of "liberty and justice for all" by curbing the damaging aspects of capitalism, while encouraging the healthy aspects of capitalism.
Everyday, I happily imagine how difficult and cringe worthy it has become to support and vote for the current GOP. Everyday, the Orange escapee from an asylum, keeps reminding his faithful that it is HE, and HE alone, that owns the GOP..not the old RINOs who are as much the enemy as Dems. So good luck to the old RINOs how might try to get their Grand Old Party off the dung heap of history where Trump has dumped it. Trump might be the new Barry Goldwater of 1964!
Meanwhile, Biden and the Democratic stewards of effective, bipartisan government keep delivering and keep proving Keynesian economics robustly grows an economy. Top down, supply side economics fails (except for the investor class)
FYI your activism suggestions are not interfering with my other ongoing efforts at all. In fact, they are filling a gap & I feel so good and right about supporting your suggested candidates. I am also an active member in the small and mighty organization, Evanston Indivisible. For example, we wrote a quarter million GOTV postcards in the last presidential race, to name one among many things we've done (pop. Evanston Illinois~75,000).
Hi Simon, enjoyed seeing you on Lawrence’s show! Helps bring reality to the forefront with factual information. Now if we could get you on MSNBC in prime time to talk about the strength and positive position of the D’s! Trump owns their airwaves, guess it’s all about ratings? Thanks for what you do, we’re with you.
Lawrence is prime time....he’s the second highest rated show on the network.....would be fun to see Simon get a hit on a Monday with Rachel Maddow though 👍
Simon and friends - the Keen video almost made me tear up. That room looks like the America I'm proud to live in with all ancestries representing, and so many women holding our democracy up. It is exactly who I am and who you Simon, and Hopium Chronicles is. I was so proud to help Tom's campaign, and now I'm moving north to Long Island. Let's do this!
Downloaded more addresses from Activate America to postcard in support Tom Suozzi's run. Signed up for a postcarding zoom hosted by Field Team 6 to write my cards with like-minded folks. Also remembered to order more stamps before the prices go up on Sunday. Let's do this.
Act Blue didn’t change its listing for the special election folks Tom Keen and Tom Suozzi to allow “weekly” donations close to the special election instead of “monthly.” Maybe it’s too much work to reprogram for more frequent donations close to a special election, but that would be a good thing for the candidates!
Awesome week and thank you - as always - for all the data! Just out together a summary to all the good news for a friend’s monthly newsletter and for all my people on social media. If anyone wants to use it, here’s a link to my post on Twitter (you can save the graphic and use it on your social media - no credit needed) - https://x.com/truthjusticehph/status/1748476066128429213?s=46
I'm curious about what initiatives are Democrats doing to close the leakage of African-American and Latino voters to the GOP and to apathy? I think in 2020, losses in Texas and Florida can at least be partially blamed on that leakage.
Thank you!

Mountain Biking? Wow! Impressive! What is your favorite area in the NC mountains? There are a lot of nice spots.

Except I believe Latino community is mostly Roman Catholic and therefore anti abortion. This 20-30+ Hispanic Dem voter number has me confused too.
Hispanics have been about 60-65% Dem, and are the most pro-choice demographic in the country, more than Whites, Blacks and Asians. More here - https://www.hopiumchronicles.com/p/with-democrats-things-get-better-957
