Tom Suozzi Leads In New Poll, Early Mail Ballots Are Promising - It’s not been a very good week for Republicans. First, the terrible turnout in Iowa. Next, Rs lost a house special they planned on keeping in Orlando. Then, the undiscplined and impulsive former President reminded us that a jury of his peers has already determined he raped E. Jean Carroll in a department store dressing room, and that he is the most unfit man to ever run for President; more good economic news just kept coming all week and the Rs case against Joe Biden just keeps melting away; their party splintered again over funding the government, and the new Speaker may already be in trouble; and now the Democrats come out of the gate strong in NY-3…..
The first poll in the GOP held former Santos seat in NY-3 has Tom Suozzi leading 45%-42%. Among very likely voters Suozzi leads 51%-37%:
Spencer Kimball, Executive Director of Emerson College polling, said: “Suozzi voters currently express heightened enthusiasm, with a majority of those ‘very likely’ voters to vote on February 13th favoring 51% to 37%.”
Our friend Tom Bonier reports that we also see this heigthened Dem enthusiasm in the first batch of mail ballots:

For here at Hopium we do more, worry less.

Jobless Claims Fall, More Encouraging News - From Reuters:
WASHINGTON, Jan 18 (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest level in nearly 1-1/2 years, suggesting job growth likely remained solid in January.
The unexpected decline in initial claims reported by the Labor Department on Thursday added to strong retail sales growth in December in painting an upbeat picture of the economy….
"The labor market remains strong and reinforces our view that the Fed is likely to hold rates at current levels until the middle of 2024," said Eugenio Aleman, chief economist at Raymond James.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 16,000 to a seasonally adjusted 187,000 for the week ended Jan. 13, the lowest level since September 2022. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 207,000 claims for the latest week….
While that could have contributed to some of the drop in claims, economists said the data was consistent with a fairly tight labor market. They noted that companies generally remained reluctant to lay off workers following difficulties finding labor during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s been a good week, fellow optimists. Let’s go win NY-3, together - Simon
Thanks Simon. Just got a new batch of postcards in to work on. Is an increase in the Latino share of the electorate a good thing for us? I hear that they are getting more conservative.
