Lots of Hopium today: Even lower Trump poll numbers; GREAT D candidate ads; the exciting Democracy Protector initiative; growing fundraising totals for our Ds; a Hopium intern! We need it to offset the constantly distressing shit show that is US policy everywhere--at home and abroad. Let's go! Our work gets more vital every day.
My political commentary as a confessed non-expert. I think El-Sayed will win some voters because his ads make us smile and sometimes even want to dance. Same with Kamala, who I still think came incredibly close in a few short weeks with Biden-discontent working against her.
I think we are weary, and we need some joy. And good candidates who can also bring joy, maybe even make us want to dance, might be being underestimated.
"Everything is worse under Trump" is certainly not hyperbole at the moment. Everyone feels it except MAGA delusionals who are still trying to convince us we're in a "Golden Age." Sorry about your travel woes, Simon. I feel you from years past.
I'm so excited for the New Battlefield Project and will be super curious to see how being a Democracy Protector might play out in Oregon where we vote by mail. I just finished 200/500 postcards to Ohio. It's a great way to be involved in something proactive and productive! Highly recommend! Safe travels home, Simon and family!
The DCCC just picked up Kentucky 6th Congressional District in the Red to Blue program. Zach Dembo is the D running against an R with a tattered past...typical. Would love to have another Democrat, currently just one, in DC. It is the BLUEgrass State. Might he be someone Hopium could consider?
Great post Simon. Those candidates are wonderful. And yes.. things are so bad for Americans... ugh. Hope you guys got home ok. Airport delays are the worst! Everyone I know is still working hard to "save our ship"!
We have giant postcard groups here in Berkshire county Mass, protests everywhere every week. Lots of education going out about voting early, ICE protection watch groups at our food panty.... I'm looking forward to the Democracy Protection Training. Bring it on. My husband and I just moved into our new place and are exhausted... getting our mojo going little by little to start up again.... Keep Calm and Carry On....
Can I plug the League of Women Voters who have been working at the polls for over 100 years, providing honest and nonpartisan support for free and fair elections. We have recently been attacked for being too “liberal “ for continuing to work for voting rights for all! If you want to help on election day, LWV is another good choice 🗳️
While it's great that our community is supporting so many great candidates, I'd like to see us encourage financial support for El Sayed in Michigan. Clearly he's in a tough race and part of accepting the breadth of the party is supporting the candidates that our Democratic voters choose. The newer polls are encouraging, but the Republican hass access to huge financial resources and our candidate needs to be able to compete if we are to hold Michigan and win the Senate.
I don't think Trump cares it all about his polling. I think he cares that he's been able to enrich himself and his buddies. I think that's all he cares about.
He talks about his polling all the time. He's terrified of being rejected, of being a loser, of the accountability to come. His desperation and mania comes from his deep rejection by the American people.
Those ads are excellent! Glad to support those candidates. Thanks for making them available, Simon. Our candidates exemplify character that radiates the sense of good for their communities and by extension, the USA.
I'm reposting a video of Democrats Eamon Collins and Michael Shepard, candidates for an open state senate seat in Washington State. As of today, only four votes separate these candidates. The county is curing ballots, and a hand recount will be conducted on August 25. In the meantime, they have each pledged to campaign for the winner if they should lose:
I shared the Hopium temporary intern opportunity with UNM College Democrats.

Couldn't agree more - we are weary and we need some joy! Full stop.

A different kind of ad! Perfect for Bobby Pulido, he could make a Hugh difference in state wide races if he can wake up nonvoters in south Texas.
Democratic Party should be doing more for Gina Hinojosa. Texas is expensive but the pay off would be big.
I agree. I did see a poll that looked promising for Gina and Abbott is an abomination.

Love the League!

Simon, why add Sam Forstag in Montana to the latest wave of House hopefuls fund?
