DOJ doesn't like NM's immigration policies, and we don't like theirs either.
From a maga press release today:
The United States has filed a complaint and motion for preliminary injunction against the State of New Mexico, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez, the City of Albuquerque, and Albuquerque Mayor Timothy Keller, alleging that the implementation of House Bill 9 (HB9), entitled the “Immigrant Safety Act,” and Albuquerque City Ordinance O-26-15, entitled the “Safer Community Places Ordinance (SCPO),” infringes on federal immigration enforcement authority.
DPNM: "The lawsuit from Trump's corrupt DOJ attacking the Immigrant Safety Act disregards New Mexico’s rights as a state in order to benefit for-profit detention facilities and enforce a violent, unpopular agenda."
Albuqurque Mayor Keller: "I will always stand up for the safety, rights, and dignity of Albuquerque residents. Our policies ensure ALL families can call 911, send their kids to school, and access City services without fear, while making clear that City resources are not tools for federal immigration raids. We are ready to defend our community, our values, and our public safety in court."
NM Attorney General Raúl Torrez: “House Bill 9 is a constitutional exercise of state authority, and this office will defend it. The New Mexico Legislature passed this law after extensive consideration of documented harms occurring in immigration detention facilities operating in this state — inadequate medical care, deaths in custody, and conditions that fell well below acceptable standards. The Legislature made a considered judgment that New Mexico’s government, its employees, and its publicly funded facilities should not be instruments of a detention system that has caused serious and preventable harm to people held within our borders. That is precisely the kind of policy judgment that belongs to the states.
The Constitution reserves to the states the power to govern their own affairs — including how state and local personnel are deployed and how publicly funded facilities are used. Federal agents remain free to enforce federal immigration law. They may make arrests, conduct investigations, and carry out removals. What they may not do is compel New Mexico’s officers, employees, and institutions to administer federal enforcement priorities the state has chosen not to adopt. The federal government has its own personnel and its own resources. It does not have a constitutional right to New Mexico’s.
This lawsuit asks a federal court to override a democratically enacted state law because the administration disagrees with the policy choice the Legislature made. That is not a constitutional argument. It is an attempt to use federal litigation to reverse an outcome the administration dislikes. We will see them in court.”
Simon, thank you for this encouraging newsletter. Today is my 39th bday and I’m celebrating a dual celebration between today and Mother’s Day tomorrow with my mom and uncle in NYC. Love my home state of MD but hard to beat NYC 😉. On my bday, I still tuned in here cuz this community means a great deal to me as does the future of our democracy.
I donated today to Cooper’s campaign through our site and plan to spread that love over the course of the week to our other candidates. To you and the community, I’d like to say how deeply grateful I am to be part of this family and to see the hard work via your leadership pay off against the seemingly insurmountable challenges.
At 39, I’m proud to say my first eligible Presidential vote was for our first African American President (although my very first primary vote was for Hilary and I’ll always be proud to have made my first vote for a woman, often feeling ahead of my time). I’m deeply proud to have supported Harris and especially in connection with this community, and plan/hope to see her get her flowers one way or another in our lifetime (at least as the next AG if not President).
As a Marylander, I’m proud to have our state’s first African American Governor, to live in close proximity to both VA and NJ’ first Female Governors, and to PA’ exceptional Jewish Governor in Shapiro. THAT is America to me all in the span of just a few states! To see and experience that representation, particularly as a Jewish Democrat and member of the LGBTQ community…keeps within me great cautious optimism and hope in spite of all we currently face. While still neurotic and concerned as I’m only human, at the same time, I have a dose of that ‘Biden optimism’ in that against the odds, I’ve never been more optimistic about our future.
The resistance we see building, the movement, the organization, the over performance, the momentum towards a modern day revolution of sorts…it’s growing in front of our very eyes even when it’s difficult to see. There are many good Republicans and Independents out there and we absolutely should embrace them as broadening the coalition will be necessary, not optional. That said, I feel especially proud to have our bench of Pro-Democracy warriors within the Democratic Party that not only includes you of course, but our Dem Governors, Attorneys General, Secretaries of State, and former Presidents, Vice Presidents, a number of current Senators, a number of current House members, and most certainly, our tireless attorneys like Elias. They ALL give me hope!
We’re more determined, more far-sighted (when working together), more passionate, compassionate, and more unified in our overarching mission. We WILL prevail and that will be a bday present well worth waiting to see come to fruition (as it’s already starting). Thank you and to the community for all of your leadership and tireless efforts. We will get through this together and reclaim our democracy. America is too big and too decentralized in the 21st century amidst the digital age. Time and circumstance is ACTUALLY on OUR side! Trust and believe that everyone. Power to the people. Love y’all ✌️💕.
Last night I watched a documentary by David Attenborough in honor of his 100th birthday. He stated that the most important thing we can do for our survival is to promote and increase biodiversity. It occurred to me that biodiversity is very important to us as individuals as well, because we are learning that having a diverse microbiome is vital for our health. It also occurred to me that if we extend the metaphor a little farther, we can say that biodiversity is also important to our democracy. We are stronger together! The GOP has shown us that it only values white, wealthy, heterosexual Protestant men. And look where that's gotten us!
Happy Mother’s Day tomorrow to everyone’s mamma here!!! All the moms did well why??? Cuz they created men and women who grew to become part of one of the most vital Pro-Democracy movements in modern history!!! Boom 💥
Regulate Guns NOT Women, a group started after the Dobbs decision, rallies for our cause at the GA Governor’s Mansion every Friday noon. During early voting we’ve also waved signs for Jen and Miracle. Yesterday was our second Friday. One more to go before Election Day May 19.
The Repub incumbents are airing ads stating that Jen and Miracle are funded by out of state interests. Well…we’re funding them and working hard to GOTV too.
Sent out 20 postcards to Georgia in the last week. On this and other forums I have seen at lot of WE ARE DOOMED talk. This not only plays into GOP hands, it is also bad for mental and physical health. Stay busy supporting democracy and cultivate a positive spirit
They need a horserace to report on between now and November. "The Dems are winning because Trump's numbers are terrible" isn't a very exciting thing for them to have to say over and over. So I expect them to turn every molehill into a mountain. That's fine. I hope the Rs get overconfident, maybe even stay home.
For staters, I wish the MSM would point out that Trump is asleep and then ask him why he keeps falling asleep. Instead, those around Trump just keep talking and the journalists say nothing.
Enjoy the day with your son! That’s what it’s all about.
Thanks for sharing the Blue Print report, really encouraging and pretty cool:
“Honestly, the stories coming out of this first week have been incredible. My favorite so far is a Fellow who registered a voter through the Taco Bell drive-thru while working her night shift. Another Fellow registered a group of voters at a laundromat while waiting for clothes to dry.”
OMG. I hadn't heard about a someone registering to vote through the Taco Bell drive-thru or someone else registering voters at a laundromat! Wonderful!
Simon - I admire your ability to turn the page and march forward. It’s generally my MO, but I must confess to struggling a bit today. I am coming to this community - a community I value deeply - not to dump on party leadership per se but to express my extreme frustration at some seriously calcified Democrats.
Sen. Mark Warner started his social media post about the VA Supreme Court’s “vile assist” (thank you Pelosi) by expressing “respect” for the decision. My head blew off my shoulders. What?? Why didn’t he start with his respect for his constituents and express deep outrage that the court invalidated their votes?
I am an upper middle class suburban woman, over age 60 - the type of voter Schumer and the crew covet. Continuously adhering to norms that died in the 20th century is denying reality but more importantly breaking my trust that enough of them know how to win in the world as it is.
Please accept this post as an effort to provide constructive feedback and not as an indulgence in negativity.
I've already written and mailed 10 postcards for the Georgia Supreme Court race today.
I'm working on some right now!
Donated what I could.
Me too !
Thanks, Simon! So glad to hear about When We Count! That's exactly the kind of year-in-year-out work we must be doing!!
I'm writing postcards to OH voters today.
Simon, Enjoy your day with your Son Willie.

The MSM herd is treating the VA Supreme Court's decision as some sort of apocalyptic blow to the Democrats' chances of retaking the House in November.
They are woefully misinformed.
I think MSM knows what they are doing; I mean promoting.

Postcards to IA today. Getting back into it after a busy two weeks for me.
