Still hoping that you consider adding OATH as a secondary mechanism to make donations. I believe it would increase the money raised since donors would get bombarded much less with spam. OATH does not share any more contact info that what is required by law and does not sell that info.

Steven, I have raised with this you before but what you write here is misleading and I would like you to take it down. People's names get shared by the campaigns and party committees. There is no way to turn that off. Moving to Oath will not change that, and that you keep asserting it here is disappointing.

Oath does not share contact information of donors and prohibits campaigns from contacting donors who give through Oath. Those are the facts.

As someone who has been receiving an average of over 300 fundraising emails a week thanks to democrats selling my info to everyone as a reward for donating to being with I can tell you that is an attractive concept. I mass delete the fundraising emails, I am just fed up with it. I literally got a new phone number to escape the addition 100-150 fundraising texts I get a week.

T**** doesn’t have the stamina to campaign, even for himself. Look at last year. And he certainly doesn’t have the mental capacity to campaign for someone else without making it about himself. And he obviously isn’t interested. VP JD isn’t either. He is too busy campaigning to get T****’s job.

I think he's in the stage of his mental collapse where, in his mind, he's just focused on building: ballrooms, bathrooms, and bulwarks that keep him confident in his youthfulness, attractiveness, smarts, virility, and adoration. Also, that the Nobel Prize remains within reach (perhaps next year?) and that he'll eventually get an Emmy for hosting The Kennedy Center Honors, during which he'll award himself a medal.

I mean, with this agenda, he can't really piss away time on anyone or anything else.

I honestly think the building/destroying stuff is signaling he intends to stay and that this is a new era beyond the democratic one. It's more alarming than just "mental collapse". He's collapsed in many respects, but the push for total, untrammeled power is still his focus.

Several points to make about that

- If an election is actually being rigged, there are legal methods to fight it. But those fights will be up to the Democratic Party and the candidate, not us.

- If elections are actually systematically being rigged and the legal methods to combat it fail, then our democracy has fallen. That's not impossible, but it would be a serious shock. I'm not going to believe it or worry about it unless there's legit evidence that it's actually happening.

- In 10 years of Trumpism, we haven't seen one single actually rigged election. What we have seen and continue to see is attempts at voter suppression.

- If people think an election is rigged, they're less likely to vote/donate/volunteer.

- The chances of losing elections legitimately are much higher than the chances that our democracy has fallen.

In the unlikely event that our democracy is fallen, voting/volunteering/donating doesn't hurt. In the likely event that our democracy is still functioning, spreading worry about rigged elections does hurt. My suggestion is to worry about getting voters to vote first, and only worrying about rigged elections if there's good evidence of it after the fact.

This advice obviously doesn't apply if you have real evidence you would like to share that an election is rigged, or if you're a journalist looking to publicize evidence of a rigged election. But if those are the case, I'm not sure why you're talking about it in the comment section here.

Hey Simon you have any insider info on the Long Island Nassau County Executive race ???? Dems outnumber Repubs in voter registration but Blakeman is the incumbent and had way more money and appears to be banking the early vote …historically this county should shift back to Dems in an off year with the other party in power but not so sure this year. Woo hoo~Let's go!

Knocking doors after work today, doing some text banking this evening and tomorrow morning. Also working voter hotline very early tomorrow - 7-9 am - with VoteRiders, a fantastic org that helps voters get the ID they need to vote, and shares detailed info on how to vote in each state. The DNC does this and does a great job with their hotline, but VoteRiders focuses upon target states that have strict voter ID laws and expedites urgent cases where people need ID for housing, jobs, etc. as well as voting. Such a great organization - I've volunteered with them for a couple years now - VoteRiders.org, y'all!

Latest polling looks good for us in all 3 critical races, and everyone I've talked to was highly motivated to vote--people seem to be getting how important this is.

The rally with Sens. Booker & Gallego yesterday was packed and energetic! Not the best venue to be able to see them, but we could hear them, and Sen. Gallego was great! I did not stick around to meet him after all - wanted to finish knocking some doors while it was still light out on such a beautiful day.

Sen. Booker was great as always, used a lot of the same lines from the Newark rally, but he really relates well to voters and we just love him back! He spent a good deal of time talking to individual people and taking selfies. So I don't have a photo w either of them - growing up in DC, meeting pols is kinda not as exciting for me as for others, so I don't feel like I missed out.

Making calls to Sens. Booker & Kim today - both were busy, busy, busy running around getting out the vote all weekend. Very happy at their performance lately. :)

Thanks for all the help, Hopium peeps - NJ and VA & CA appreciate you!

Keep going!

Thanks for update Lisa!! Phonebanked yesterday for NJ and my sense was very motivated voters who planned to vote 11/4 (not so much with the early voting for them but it was the last day). One guy said he’d been contacted almost daily about voting but thanked and encouraged me anyway— “hey, you gotta do what you gotta do.”

I saw an early voting NJ summary from Jay Kuo this morning and it continues to be “cautiously optimistic” good news, in line with the polling Simon has reported.

Finally regarding that recent poll that had some people worried, the report there was it predicted Jack C. would have a 60-40 advantage with Black voters. Maybe they accidentally polled another planet in the spiderverse?

You continue to awe and inspire me. LFG!!!

Thanks for the comprehensive post. I voted early Friday in a precinct that had little on the ballot beyond "dog catcher," but I still got out there and voted for the Democrat!

Aside from my self congratulatory back slapping, what jumps out most to me from this post is the relatively low level of satisfaction that we (Democrats) have with the party. While intense disgust with Trump and the Republicans will likely drive us past this dissatisfaction in the short term, it's urgent IMHO to figure out the root causes for this unhappiness now and address them while we're still dealing with the current disaster. Otherwise, as was the case between 2021-24, it may again be difficult to sustain whatever gains we make.

because people can get discouraged; the price of housing does seem out of reach, for one thing; i have two adult kids and looked at a house in the neighborhood, it was over half a mil and in only fair condition; a realtor friend showed up because they all have buyers waiting, he noted immediately there was a horizontal crack in the foundation, an expensive repair. the house sold the same day. needed new garage doors too. my kid is a state employee with a masters, making 68k; he couldn't even begin to afford this handyman special. and he will be attacked by republicans for having a pension and costly insurance. so there's that; its nj but other desirable states are not much better. harris, iirc, actually had some relief plans to help home buyers.....i do not hear anything from republicans.....

I think it may be true that fear of and opposition to Trump is the main political mover of our era, but I do think that the Democrats need to pursue a direction that feels new and fresh. If we are just promising to go back to pre-Trump values and norms, it might fall flat.

The MAGA voters are lost, but there are many people who don't vote at all maybe in part due to cynicism. When voters are cynical, for example maybe Independent voters, or non voters, whenever someone comes around who is outside the establishment or who seem "different", a certain number of people latch onto that.

The whole Trump phenomena reminds me in some ways of Jesse Ventura when he won in MN. Ventura isn't vile like Trump, but he won because the established parties ran boring, mediocre candidates (or terrible ones in Coleman for the GOP) who didn't promise fundamental changes to disaffected, cynical voters.

We do need to go beyond "Trump sucks, therefore we should or will win".

I think most of our candidates are outstanding, Spanberger and Sherrills are great. So I think we can turn around our negative numbers and the cynicism that Trump feeds off of. So I think we can and will turn our own negatives around a lot.

Simon Rosenberg's avatar

Patrick, two points here:

1) every day here we have an agenda for what we are for - growing economy, preserving democracy, improving health care, working with allies, etc

2) it is fear and opposition to MAGA AND a go forward agenda. It is AND not BUT. The indictment comes first, the agenda second. Those who write about this who put these things in opposition to one another do all of us a disservice. It is not a choice, it is AND. We can do more than one thing at a time.

Patrick's avatar

I completely agree with both points you are making. I wasn't implying otherwise. Those two aims are not in opposition at all.

I just think we are in an environment that favors candidates who feel like outsiders, or who promise massive change. Ending the chaos is what, in part, got Biden elected in 2020, but it needs to be pushed further along.

What stood out to me is that despite having dissatisfaction with the Dem Party, voters will still vote for the Dem candidate. This was my biggest fear - that they would not vote for the Dems. So, this is very encouraging.

Also, however anyone might feel about Mamdani, his campaign has been refreshing and fun. I hope Party Leaders and Allies take note. Also, Newsom's team has been great as well. You have to create buzz and follow up with great, consistent messaging. JMO

Two questions:

1. Regarding the surveys in which part of the question includes “Rotated, Republican / Democrat”, does that mean that half the survey respondents saw “Republican” listed first while half were presented with the “Democrat” option listed first?

2. I’m unclear how the disastrous OBBB and the 12 legally mandated appropriations budgets are linked. When I phone my three idiotic GOP congresspersons to demand an end to masked ICE thugs on our streets, I don’t know how to phrase my argument: do I say, “those billions that tRumpy is spending to increase his ICE army should be removed from any appropriations bill”? Or “those billions may have appeared in the OBBB, but do not include them in the “real” budget (if you morons ever get around to actually writing appropriations bills, that is)”. I just don’t understand how the OBBB has provided all these billions towards fulfilling Stephen Miller’s sick fantasies while at the same time, the process for allocating money through government agencies is in limbo.

If anybody can clarify these for me, I’d appreciate it!
