Great points! I totally agree we are in the first quarter and have a lot of time on the clock to put the work in to close this out. We want this more and have way more to lose.

Shortly before receiving this Hopium email, I got an email from the Wisconsin Democrats with a screen shot on top of Simon's Twitter post showing how much better Democrats are for job creation than the GOP. Love seeing the message resonate throughout the party!

Also, such a smart perspective about polling being only one factor in viewing the health of a campaign. Paul Farhi posted on Twitter yesterday the following historic polling reminders:

June 1992, WaPo-ABC:

Ross Perot 36%, George HW Bush 30%, Bill Clinton 26%

Feb. 2004, Gallup:

John Kerry 55%, George W. Bush 43%

Oct. 2012, Gallup

Mitt Romney 50%, Barack Obama 46%

Beyond polling, all of us can proudly lean in to this: Joe Biden is not only one of the most successful presidents in modern times, he's also a genuinely kind, decent, empathetic human being. His latest interaction on the campaign trail helping a boy with a stutter is incredibly moving: https://twitter.com/JoeBiden/status/1768338959875142107 The contrast between Biden and his vile opponent could not be clearer.

Thanks for posting that link - Joe Biden is a genuinely nice guy and incidents like this reinforce it!

I really appreciate seeing Macron’s video. Of course he’s right. Putin has been waging war in Europe for 10 years and his aggression escalated with his invasion of Ukraine. Putin must be stopped and we may have to deploy western troops to do that. If elected, Trump would immediately end US support for Ukraine……Trump will let Putin do “whatever the hell he wants.” Defeating Trump makes it possible to help defeat Putin.

I was at my cousin's home this week who is an attorney. She asked me if I watched the SOTU and I said yes. Her comment was it made her feel more hopeful about Biden since up until that point she was hesitant about him running again. I went on to share a few talking points from one of Simon's post just to leave her with something positive to consider and think about. We have a yearly family gathering each July so there's more opportunities for leaving some more talking points behind.

Right now it is postcards, but they will also do texting, phonebanking, and canvassing later in the cycle. Here is some info on their current postcard campaigns in AZ:

🚩🚩🚩

Arizona: Support Ruben Gallego for Senate and flip Congressional Seats!

It’s official - Sinema is not running, and the Arizona Senate race is focused on electing the supremely qualified Congressman Ruben Gallego over MAGA extremist Kari Lake. We have two options to boost name recognition for Gallego available! We are continuing the prescription drug cost campaign, and we have added a reproductive justice campaign! Write to infrequent Democratic voters to make sure they know Ruben Gallego helped lower the costs of prescriptions and will be a champion for reproductive freedom in the US Senate.

We also have reproductive justice campaigns available to support Kirsten Engel for the US House in CD 6 and against the MAGA Congressman Schweikert in CD 1. Please mail these postcards within 3 weeks of receiving the materials.

Simon, I am so pleased to see that Hopium quickly is closing in on its goal of 50,000 subscribers. About a handful of those are people to whom I have warmly recommended subscribing. Just 2000 more to go!

These setbacks in the courts in holding Trump accountable will only serve to inflame people’s anger and resentment. We need to turn that anger into action, and I believe we will.

Expand full comment

The tortuous legal shenanigans only further erode the Republican Party. Sentient voters understand what is going on; slick R lawyers may "win" temporarily!!

Don't know about a scorecard but a website that tracks the ongoing legal troubles facing Republican officials and leaders would be helpful.

Seriously, keep all of these cases/ lawsuits straight is a full time job.

Anyone watching the GOP senatorial primary in Ohio on March 19? Apparently the Trump-backed candidate, Bernie Moreno, has some “issues” to deal with. (Trump’s going there to rally for him this weekend.) For an interesting read I’d suggest people look at the AP article on this. I swear you can’t make this stuff up!

I think the intern claiming to post that online "male-seeks-male" ad as a "prank", is made up.

Of course it is. Deflection, denial or out and out lying is the MAGA way. They probably paid the intern a couple grand. Might be interesting if he took a lie detector test.

Did any one else read Dan Rather observation about the wording that Ken Buck used in his decision to leave the House next week?

Rather interpreted his speech to mean that he (Rather) thought that more Republican House members would be retiring shortly. As in before the election. MAGA Mike has only a 5 seat advantage. Agree/ disagree?

Speaker Jeffries before November?

Buck won his election in 2022 handily. I believe that that District will remain R but with someone other than Boebert. Her old District (CO-3) in western CO (and includes Pueblo) definitely leans R. The Cook Political Report lists that District as Lean Republican.

Do you have links to Rather and Trippi? I am unable to find them.

Unfortunately, I do not. Came across the Rather's comment in my Twitter feed. I think he reposted his comment from his Substack newsletter. Sorry.

With the full take over of the organization f/k/a the Republican National Committee, the Trump National Committee has fired most of its professional staff and relocated to Florida. This will help to streamline the grift but also hurt their ability to GOTV, manage donor/ voter lists, end their grass roots operations, hurt down ballot candidates and limit the effectiveness of their data team.

The question is, does this damage happen soon enough and wide spread enough to effect this November's election?

This looks like an opportunity to for the DNC to fill the void in the areas the TNC is leaving.

Also, saw that the TNC is ending their early voting, vote by mail program that was a significant party of their electorally success over the last couple of decades.

Expand full comment

Given his legal and financial troubles, and having to present bonds for more than $500,000,000, Trump will be bleeding the RNC dry. This means an incredible number of downticket candidates are going to be starved for campaign funds. Trump’s takeover of the RNC and his "strategy" just hand Democrats a huge gift – an extreme likelihood of a Blue Tsunami in November!

Actually, it’s a triple gift to Democrats. As Hank says the RNC is shelving all its efforts to get Republicans to vote early or vote-by-mail. And to top it off, the RNC is curtailing its minority outreach.

.

Yup, Trump is a stable genius: well suited to shovel muck out of the stables.

It still relieve ALL of us doing the necessary and needed daily work to get every Democrat from President Biden to the local dog catcher elected in November.

It’s best to not get too excited about “Trump being broke.” He’s about to get a multi-billion payday from Truth Social going public. It’s a complete grift but it is real (the stock market is bidding up shares of the company to absurd heights). He’s already settled the dispute with the other founders and only has to get the BOD to rule and let him to waive 6 month waiting period to sell once it the IP0 happens (which they will do). . He’s finally about to become really rich. Just what we needed but we will still kick his - soon to be actually - rich butt.

Expand full comment

John, as I understand it, that is most uncertain. For Trump to get his payout, there are lots of Ifs – and rules need to be set aside. We’ll see if that six-month waiting period actually gets waived.
