They signed an agreement. Hamas can buy weeks of a ceasefire and humanitarian aid by returning the hundreds of people they abducted from Israel. Just 10 a day. Weeks of a ceasefire to try create space to negotiate some kind of broader and more sustainable agreement. Hamas agreed to these terms, and the fighting will only resume if they cannot deliver.
There is an agreement in place. The pause will continue if Hamas keeps releasing hostages. So far Israel has held up their side of the agreement. Hamas was given a mechanism to extend the pause for weeks. Whether that happens is up to them. Please read my newsletter today. Thank you.
The Israeli war cabinet reaffirmed their commitment to extend the pause/cease fire today one day for every 10 hostages returned, as their cease fire agreement with Hamas spells out. This is allowing aid to get to the people of Gaza, creating space for broader talks.
Would also appreciate you engaging with my writing here a bit more as you may have noticed I call for the ouster of Netahyahu today, and have been doing so since the Spring.
Betsy, While my reply is a bit off topic, if you want to learn some about the imprisoned Palestinian women and children by Israel, see Bethan McKerman’s Guardian’s piece (Nov. 22, 2023) “300 Palestinian women and children in Israeli jails listed before prisoner release.” Spoiler alert: While it’s not stated in this particular piece, Israel has arrested a million Palestinians in the West Bank since 1967 largely to suppress resistance to occupation.
I just want to share a very good movie on Holodomor, "Mr. Jones". "The movie breaks important new cinematic ground, introducing mainstream international audiences to the 1932-33 Ukrainian famine for the first time. Known to Ukrainians as the Holodomor, the famine was one of the worst atrocities of the twentieth century, but it has yet to enter the global consciousness in a manner befitting the scale and impact of the tragedy" (https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/ukrainealert/mr-jones-film-exposes-the-fake-news-campaign-behind-stalins-ukrainian-genocide/).
A chilling story of Soviet brutality - among many, of course - is BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY, a novel based on the actual USSR occupation of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia in WW2. Substitute "Russia" for "Soviet" to recognize that its methods haven't changed: "Separation of family was a form of Soviet terror that facilitated dominance over a nation while undermining identity, human dignity, and endurance." You can also substitute "Hamas" and other terrorist groups, foreign and domestic for "Soviet."
Also I would love to hear informed opinions of how to address pollution, loss of biodiversity triggered by this catastrophic situation and rumours Netanyahu wants to build canal to transport oil or dig up oil in the mediterranean. With all the alternatives why support new fossil fuel projects.
War is an environmental catastrophe as well as a human catastrophe.
Thank you for your support f Israel, Mr. Rosenberg.
No, the pause isn’t just up to Hamas. Do you really think Netanyahu would stop bombing even if all the hostages were released?
Exactly. He's (Bibi) been locking himself into the role he now plays for quite some time

Sounds like you trust Bibi more than I do

I really appreciate your responses on this - so reasonable.

We do - we HAVE TO win!
