Afternoon all. Got a good one for you today. Sending along an interview I just completed with an old and dear friend, Rep. Haley Stevens of Michigan. She gives us an important update from the front lines of the reconciliation battle in the House, and as a newly announced candidate in one of the most important Senate races in the country. A recording and transcript are above.
I got to know Haley when she was a young staffer in the Obama Administration working on a national strategy to accelerate job creation in the US. She had just completed time working on the great auto rescue of Obama’s early days. Since then she flipped a Trump House district blue in the 2018, was elected the President of the storied 2018 freshman class and was a critical partner to the Biden Administration in designing and passing it’s three big economic bills - the American rescue plan, the CHIPS Act, and The Inflation Reduction Act.
Here is an essay I wrote that came from my time collaborating with Haley when she was at the Economic Development Agency of the Commerce Department, A Department of Jobs, Skills and Economic Development.
While we talk about her Senate race and this week’s battle over the reconciliation bill, what I think will be most interesting to our community is her description of how Trump’s economic agenda is harming the Michigan economy and threatening the important gains the state has made in recent years. This part of the conversation takes the abstract economic issues we discuss here daily and makes them tangible and easier to understand. She provides a great window into why Trump’s agenda is so dangerous, and why it is being so roundly rejected by the people of Michigan and all across the US.
So get to this interview when you have the time. Haley is an incredibly smart, hard-working and committed public servant, and a good friend. She is also a leading candidate in one of the most Senate races of the cycle. I am excited to be able to introduce her to you today……..
Keep working hard all - Simon
