Some brief notes on the historic, world-altering Oval Office meeting today. I will have more in tomorrow’s Hopium post and in the days ahead.
First, please read my post from this morning. It argues that while Democrats have a clear path forward on the economy, health care, and the Trump budget we need to open up a second front on Trump’s ongoing betrayal of the country and attack on the US government itself. After today that task has grown more urgent.
Second, I send along what for me is the most important clip of the meeting, above. Here Trump talks about how Putin “went through a helluva lot with me.” Putin is a Trump buddy, partner, ally. They went through a lot together. Listen to the anger and the bile.
It is critical in the coming days to challenge the effort by many to wall off Trump’s embrace of Putinism as something that only applies to Ukraine and Europe. We should be concerned that these two buddies are working to also weaken America here at home through the ongoing extraordinary, ferocious, and illegal dismemberment of the US government. There is a hatred of America and Americans driving this attack on our government that is not easily explained through conventional American politics. There is not a Putin-loving Trump abroad and an America-loving Trump here at home. Not how it works.
